I use a g4 iMac for my academic stuff. It's so old it can't post on 4chan anymore because it can't handle html5 properly.
I've got a samsung laptop that I can never remember the specs of because I don't care. It was the cheapest one that had positive reviews. It lets me shitpost on /g/ and play movies in HD. Beyond that, can't say I can what's in it.

I need to do software development in Windows for the first time in my career (been using OS X and Linux for years). The Windows command line is a complete abortion. Is there any way to make my dev environment more unix-like? Is cygwin still the best offering?

you can even habe your own Xserver desktop in a Windows with your favourite WM (like mwm, fvwm ...)
Cygwin is pretty good. I don't use it for its shell though because bash is pretty slow. If you need tab completion more like bash-completion, install Clink (http://mridgers.github.io/clink/). Also consider learning Powershell instead of using old-ass cmd/batch. Its very sleek and... powerful

There's co-linux if you actually want Linux on windows. But it's painfully out of date, not to mention that upgrading has been something of a headache (at least for me). If you don't mind this, try it. Otherwise, Cygwin is probably better for you.

Lets look at Apples success, The apple 2, then the imac, the ipod, the iphone, the ipad, the macbook pro.
all of these systems besides the apple 2 are closed systems which require jailbreaking to open up.
The jailbreaks are immensely popular for these closed systems, which implies WoZ was right, and people wanted Apple 2 because of its open status.
Steve Jobs was literally a meme, his ideas about closed systems killed Apple, the newton was basically the future, and Apple was way ahead of its time.
Everything Apple is successful for is based on the Newton.
