I've noticed an increase in frequency of meta threads about the current state of the board lately.

So, instead of making another one to complain, I'll make another one to ask you a question instead: what are your favorite kinds of threads on /g/? What keeps you coming here?

Is there any kind of discussion you wish occurred more often?

Corrupt boot sector. Maybe it's just the boot sector or maybe the entire drive is dead. Boot any live USB and check.

It can't USB boot, there is a bootable DVD in the DVD drive, but it doesn't even get to that (i.e. can't get further diagnostics thus far).

In 2012 and 2013, some members of Congress tried to pass the privacy killing bill CISPA. But Americans pushed back and defeated it. Now CISPA is back - only it's being called CISA - and it's even worse than before.

Look it over, sign the petition if you wish to protect your privacy, or don't...

Hey /g/. I'm one of the people working on a new experimental UI framework called Cycle.js.

It's kind of like React, but more it's functional and reactive. Instead of using a pull-based getters/setters paradigm, it uses RxJS streams (data dependency coverage is inherently 100%).

Might be the next big thing. Check it out.

The iPad Air 2 has 10 bit hardware acceleration enabled since iOS 8 which nPlayer and the like use.

The only travesty here is that the only tablet with HEVC acceleration right now is the Pixel C, the problem being that it runs Android of all operating systems. Thank Christ for nVidia pushing the standard though.

I *think* the Surface Pro 4 also support hardware HEVC acceleration through the Intel HD Graphics 5xx series, but that's guesswork.

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working on making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

For few days now, I am using Arch Linux but I fail to configure the sound.

I downloaded the alsa, asla mixer and PulseAudio. I want to be able to change/mu
te the volume through a GUI in my tint2 pannel and with the keys built-in my key
board (So I also downloaded xbindkeys)

In alsamixer, I see nothing muted but the command
amixer sset Master unmute

replies back
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0

Same goes when I try to increase the volume.

Going in alsamixer, the card HDA Intel HDMI is display by default.
I type f6, choose HDA Intel PCH instead (again, nothing is muted) but no matter what, I fail to get sound from the laptop speaker / jack output.

It may be something obvious since this is my first time using arch elsewhere than a virtual machine.

is hyperthreading a meme? when the fuck will games take advantage of it?

Games will take advantage of it, since it's just extra threads. It's not nearly as good as having actual extra physical cores, though, so if a game needs 4 threads and you own a quad-core, it probably won't use HT, and with good reason.
