Welcome to /fBSDt/! All users are welcome, including beginners. Please be civil, this is a "Friendly" thread.
>why should I try a BSD?
They're open source, Unix-like, they offer great features, stability, security and versatility to all your needs. They are well-documented and sport ample hardware support.
>where should I start?
Check the resources below. PC-BSD, GhostBSD and MidnightBSD are easy-to-install, user-friendly desktop-oriented distributions of FreeBSD that can get you started. Install on VirtualBox first just to try it out.
Seasoned Unix users, why not get a free OpenBSD remote shell to play with at devio.us? Try pfSense, m0n0wall or OPNsense on your firewall, experiment with NetBSD on your embedded device, or create your own network storage server with FreeNAS!
>w-what's the difference between all those something-BSDs?
After version 4.4, the BSD operating system was forked into many different distributions with different focuses. FreeBSD aims to be fully-featured, NetBSD focuses on portability (it runs even on toasters!), OpenBSD on security and correctness, DragonFly BSD implements cutting-edge filesystem and SMP technology. And then there are specific subdistributions of the aforementioned, like for example PC-BSD, which is a desktop-focused distribution of FreeBSD.

How do I into servers?
I've got a week of free time, so I thought I might get a start on a browser game engine with a C/Java server and Javascript+HTML5 client, but I'm wondering if there's right and wrong ways to do the server, since I've seen some pretty poor servers in the past. Also, there's stuff like hiring the server which could get messy.
I cant fucking stand this crap. it has been almost 3 years since it became mainstream and i still fucking hate it.
Any friends here who feel the same?

Good morning /g/, Im just re-installed Debain 7 (from my 2010 SSD shitting on me) after a few years, and i was reminded that:
>Stability
>Freedoms (if i wanted to)
>No botnet (to my knowledge)
What I'd like to know is what are the CONS of Debian. Can /g/ tell me some (that aren't political or silly).
And what Distribution do you favor?
Juan bumpo
Debian a best.
>what are the CONS of Debian
Their package policy is inflexible.
I can't recall the exact package, but one was removed from Jessie (but available in both stretch and wheezy) because a bug was found two days before freeze.
It was fixed shortly after the release of Jessie, but as it was past their 'due date' they still won't package it. It is still currently unavailable (unless you compile from source, package it yourself or install a shady binary). Had the bug been discovered slightly later or earlier, the package would have been available in Jessie.
If they had flexibility, they would have added it into 8.1.0 because the correction was made so close to release.
Apart from that it's pretty based.
Either outdated packages or an unstable hack job of package management

Here's your glorious png.
I installed Ubuntu 16.04 on the MBP the company just gave me and the manager complained. He said that we should all move from open software because it lacks security and stability. I got annoyed so I return the MBP and continue using the old Dell instead. Why do we still have such FUD in 2016?
I mean, all of our infrastructure run on Linux, if linux is insecure then we should starts worrying about our server than developer's laptop
What you've said makes no sense, and it sounds a lot like you've left out key details. So without knowing more, the best I can offer is that the internal IT staff simply has a policy for supporting their equipment that doesn't accommodate autistic people, and you got burned by it. It doesn't matter that only 0.1% of people would install Ubuntu if given the option, but that if they had a policy allowing that and just 10% of people took advantage of it, they would never be able to keep up with the support requests.
Again, without knowing more, there's no way we can help an autistic person navigate social situations like being told you're not supposed to do something. It could be about licensing concerns with GPLv3 code, or it could be an issue with vendor bidding or something.
If this honestly bothers you enough for you to make a thread about it, ask your manager if your benefits include seeing a therapist or something.

Honestly, I think that publishers are going to have to move entirely to "sponsored content" a.k.a. infomercials. Which isn't entirely a bad thing, so long as they're conspicuously marked as such. I'd rather have that than direct attempts to invade my privacy.
>>54162073
This too. If it becomes sufficiently unprofitable to run "free" sites, we're going to see a divide between "commercial internet" (netflix, retail, maybe social networks which are likely to remain "free" and popular), and "hobby" internet. Webrings would be neat to see again. And unmonetized forums.
