We spend too much time talking about distributions and ricing and not enough discussing good GNU/Linux software.
Let's talk about useful programs that make our lifes easier and can't be (or are not generally) used on Windows.
Some recommendations for new users: https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/List_of_recommended_GNU/Linux_software

Espeak when you're too lazy too read something.

That list you posted is full of things that are run on Windows, what's your point in looking for non-Windows software anyway?

There is nothing more exhilarating than the feeling after you pass a certification exam. I can't wait for my next one. Pic unrelated

Shuttle has a nice design and ID3 tag editor. Not too expensive and the free version has everything you need if you don't want to pay.
Google Play Music.
It's honestly great. I never have to fuck around with buying, pirating, ripping, or copying anything, and I never have to worry about storage capacity when choosing a phone or tablet.
>>47327303
Google shill here. You can store 50,000 songs.
I uploaded 15k and have over 120 days worth of music I can access from any computer with chrome.

Let's see how the people of this board will do in certain scenarios involving technology.
ITT: It's about time for your child to start using the computer. Being the wonder rockstar dad/mom you are, you teach your child how to use a computer.
Although, what would you teach your son/daughter first?
Would you make them build their own computer?
What OS would you make them learn?
How far are you going into computer science with them?
Do you want your child to be a successful neckbeard?
>>47323996
I don't plan on having children
>>47323996
>Would you make them build their own computer?
Yes. This is a wonderful bonding activity and will help the child to strenghten their motoric skills as well as their logical thinking.
>What OS would you make them learn?
Either OS X or Windows unless Linux has become widely adopted in workspaces. I would tell them about Linux anyway but teaching them a proper knowledge of OSs they can use in their jobs is the best for them.

but I have, anon
Hi /g/. I got into University of Chicago and University of Michigan and waitlisted at Carnegie Mellon. I love math, comp sci, crypto, secure software engineering, machine learning and data science so it seems UChicago would be a good fit, but it's so fucking depressing. I'm honestly scared I'll fucking an hero there because I've come close before. UMich otoh is a big fucking party school, and I don't think I stand a chance at CMU. What do?
>>47297583
What's so depressing about UChicago? Are you afraid of the native wildlife?
>>47297607
It's known as one of the most stressful schools in the country, it's fucking cold, and it has a reputation of being "where fun goes to die". Just to add to that stress thing, 6hrs of studying a day being the norm is fucked up imo
Just go to CMU if you get it
I'm not a big tech guy, and am finally getting a smartphone. I've been looking at the Lumia 1020 as I love recording/capturing, and often do it for projects as hobbies.
My worry and wonder though is, it looks like no new phones have been released in quite some time for Windows Phone. I know it's not dead with WP10 on it's way, but what's up with that?
Have any new phones come out in 2014 for the platform I should be aware of?
Get a 930
It's the exact same situation that happened with the Zune, except there is a little more life in it. Microsoft began pushing their mobile operating systems a little too late after Android and Apple had gotten a firm marketshare. Sort of how Microsoft released the Zune long after Apple had released the iPod and everyone had already gotten one. When Microsoft released the Zune, it was a really good Media Player, no doubt. But it simply didn't have enough to make people want to switch from an iPod.
That's the pickle Microsoft is in today, sure Windows...
