You're not a real programmer unless you know C

I really like C, but why are you saying that?
>>
>>54937164
I'm not sure I agree, but I think it's a good first language. It was the language we used in my first university computing class, 16 years ago now.

Still use it all the time.

Pretty good.
It's better to get good at C and Assembly before starting the book.

Operating System Thread
>What OS do you use?
>Advantages over other OSs
>Disadvantages?
>why did you choose that OS?

Linux (Ubuntu)
Over non-Linux OSes, I can run it with very low resource overhead. Over other flavors of Linux, it was easy enough to install that even I could do it.
A few seemingly simple things are far more complicated than they need to be.
Windows 10 bothered me too much and was too demanding on the computer for providing me absolutely nothing special at idle.
>>
> What OS
Wingwangdingdangs 7/8.1/10
> Advantages
Widespread use, lots of help if needed, does what I want it to easily, troubleshooting is easy, haven't yet run into a problem I haven't been able to either fix or bypass
> Disadvantages
Largely locked down, later versions spy on users (which is why I don't use them), not a lot of customisation without third party software.
> Why did you choose it
It's just what I've always used. I've tried Linux Mint and Ubuntu at various times, but I've never sat down and decided to use them exclusively for any length of time, even though they would certainly be useful and interesting to learn.

What the fuck why would they even list these as entry level.

To make it reasonable for all applicants except a VP's young adult child to get rejected for the position.

the more I think about it the more I realize these positions really are so undesirable no person would actually apply for them

are these actually for real for nepotism and H1B visas or am I just jaded?

I'm doing "Computer Science" in academia. I'm literally just now taking programming logic. Next semester, I was given the choice of C or Java. I chose C. Will I be able to transition to Java fairly easily after learning C or are they that different? Won't it come down to just learning new syntax?

I'm asking because I'm worried when I hear that the job market is heavily Java-oriented. Is this for the most part true. Are there many code monkey jobs for people that master C and C++?

Dont worry senpai not only are there TONS of jobs using C/C++, but also if you understand C, Java will come easy.

You'll have no problem learning Java.

looking to get a new laptop or tablet, i saw the old asus transformer t100 (T100TA-C1-WH(S)) on slamazon for 200 bucks. is it good? according to reviews it runs full windows 8, not rt so i can run all of my regular executables on it. does anyone have this model or similar or used it before?

I've been thinking about a tablet too, but i've been thinking of getting the Nvidia Shield.
>>
>>54937007
transformers are nice two 2-1s. Maybe look for a newer model with cherry trail SoC and higher res screens.

I was looking at the older one because it's cheap and it has the dock with built in 500gb which doesn't seem to be an option anymore. I was looking to spend like $300 or less.

Hey /g/ was wondering if anyone would like to help a noob install majaro linux on their laptop, and is there another version of linux that you'd recommend over majaro?

pic unrelated, i just like the picture.

I honestly not recommend using Manjaro if you're a noob.

Try something easier, like Xubuntu.
>>
Some flavor of Ubuntu, since it'll be very easy to get all of the components of your laptop working.
>>
Ubuntu Gnome iso, if your laptop isn't a toaster. It's intuitive and can easily be riced.

Good starting point senpai, check /r/unixporn to rice

I need a laptop that is able to run programs like solid works and auto CAD fairly well for college, any advice or suggestions.

If it's already proper fucked, try tearing it apart and have a crack at fixing it. My Ainol 10" tablet wouldn't charge at all and was dead, so I ripped that fucker apart and found the solder on the charge port had cracked and come loose. Resoldered it and we were good to go.

What other issues do you have?

In a couple months a friend will be moving into a house that's in a shady party of town, and I need some advice on how to keep it secure for under $500.

I've been playing too much fallout 4 so all that I can think of is to install more turrets.

Why is it that IT guys in every place I've worked for have all been useless, self-entitled, lazy pieces of shit? Is that a skill they teach students in network-oriented CS courses?

Post your office IT guys stories.

I work in a bank.

Someone thought it was a good idea to ship half of out back office to pajeets and half to Mexico.

I almost lost a huge transaction for a client because a Mexican piece of shit fucked up their job by being lazy and not confirming the fix was in place. I got him fired.

>when pc games are limited to ps4 / xbox one levels?
No they're not. While the piss 4 is limited to 30FPS, 900p resolution and medium-ish pc graphics settings, I can easily reach 60FPS+ at 1440p on maximum graphics settings on my R9 390X GPU.

However I don't see why anyone would be stupid enough to get the 1080, it's fermi 2.0 and has hardware async.
>>
My GPU is nearly 5 years old now, it can't play Dark Souls 3 very well.
