Can we talk about desktop concepts and why they're good / bad?

Basically, any DE has a way to launch programs (dock/panel/winbar), a menu (in the window or as a global menu), and the filebrowser + standard contextmenu. That seem to be the necessary essential GUI elements.

What do you think is best and why?

I personally like the OSX concept best even tho i don't like apple. It seems clear and concise. Ubuntu isn't very polished and a bit wonky. Gnome 2 has a lot of redundancy and 3 has a lot of shell elements that just seem a bit odd to access to me.

KDE and Windows (one bar + startmenu + menu inside the windows) seem unimpressive but somewhat practical, and people are used to it.

I like OSX's spotlight. The windows quicksearch equivalent is okay, not really happen with ubuntu's... visually bloated and not as good imo. There's some good linux alternatives tho

Just use OS X then... Besides the /g/ biased why don't you like apple?

I prefer no dock, no top bar, no panel or start menu. Just a blank screen with nothing on it, but I have all the commands memorized to do what I need. My monitor is basically a picture frame I can program on. Just without the pictures, that shit is for autist.

Is there a distro that has KDE properly set up? Every one i've used KDE looks like shit and I don't have time to go through 2000 options

If you buy intel or Nvidia products you are literally supporting companies worse than Hitler and Apple.

Who's excited for the landing of the best Linux distro in over a decade? 87% done so not long until an Alpha lads. Why use Papyros?

>Based on Arch Linux so you'll have rock solid reliability and rolling release updates
>Implements Google's beautiful 'Material Design' specification
>Has intelligent notifications and is completely customisable
>User account restrictions, application sandboxing and eventually convergance
>Great integration with Web Applications
>A cross platform application framework

Will you use Papyros when released? Papyros.io

For the longest time, I've been juggling around the idea of having a specialized USB with a collection of software and a distro of Linux installed for emergency recovery situations for a long while, but could never figure out what suites would be ideal for it -- no fuss, no mess, get in, fix it, get out kind of deals, and if it can't be fixed... have enough space to recover what's important.

Have any of you /g/urus ever done something like this? What'd you install/recommend?

Damnsmalllinux?

>>51394448
knoppix has always filled that niche for me, just werks on pretty much any system, can recover files from ntfs just fine or chroot into fucked linux installs, use diagnostics like smartctl, and networking usually works straight away so you can even google for issues while troubleshooting, etc...

might be worth looking into making your own bootable linux image if your needs are more specialized and you need something like that on a frequent enough basis
>>
>>51394495
Seems like an option, but any signs of life with it died off in 2012, unless I'm not looking in the right places.

>>51394582
The problem I have with going too 'niche' is that I would want the ERT stick to be applicable to as many systems as I come across, since I have the unfortunate position of being the family technical support in a lot of cases -- home, small business, or otherwise. Hell, the reason I got prompted to think of this project again is because I need to have a new OS on start-up to get into a borked Windows 2008 Server's file system. Can't be too sure if something I worked on myself would be able to do the widescope I want/need.

I'm going to be doing some work for a customer in monitoring his OSX server and backing it up.

What tool is recommended for monitoring his servers? How should I manage those backups?

Thanks!

i am a apple fan and let me tell you, being an apple user is actually a great thing. we have beautiful products and we have ugly products. just like any company. tim cook for 1 is a great person, makes great products, and takes care of every one that is in his customer base and is glad to do it, and for that he has people that love him around him. also, apple products are one of the best profucts you can have. sometimes they can be really restricted, but they will take care of you no matter what, and the genius bar will help you buy what ever it is that you need. as long as your not a selfish ****head. Also, we all have great jobs, lots of money and an online community that we all love and helps us eat shit out of our hands.

Is the Chuwi Hi8 a good tablet?

It's $75 from China; Intel Bay Z3736F Quad Core 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, 32GB memory (+SD), 1200*1920 resolution (8" IPS), etc.

http://www.banggood.com/Chuwi-HI8-Intel-Z3736F-Quad-Core-8-Inch-Dual-Boot-Tablet-p-980536.html

The only thing that concerns me is the x86 CPU. How does Android handle Intel chips these days? Do many apps work with it?

Core 2 Quad***

Why are we still using this crusty old system, /g/? It's bloated, old and maintained by a lunatic. Alpine Linux has the GNU system totally replaced by alternatives and it's objectively faster and more secure than any distro using GNU.

I agree. I've been looking to strip GCC and replace it with TCC.

Also busybox is interesting but it seems more geared towards embedded systems.

Anyway I'm interested in creating a GNU free distribution of anyone else is.

We can finally purge the Linux community of Stallman.

That is an important hurdle we must cross. The BSD license offers true freedom.
