Should I get a T410 or an X201? Specs are exactly the same (i5-560M w/ 4GB RAM), what does /g/ recommend and why?
does anyone run a completely free thinkpad here? do you recommend it? what distro are you running? what do you use it for?

There's plenty of proof Chrome is a botnet. Do you know shit about browsers? It's also Spyware/Malware.
It installs Google Updater without your consent. Google Updater has no menu entries, or any sensible way to turn it off. Google Updater phones home even when NOTHING is updating.
As for Chrome it sends your URL keystrokes to Google even if you aren't searching Google and are just trying to fucking go to a website.
Even if you turn all the privacy options on in Chrome's settings packet capturing has still proved it phones home with suspicious data.
If you didn't know these you're probably in the "my first computer was a vista laptop in 2008" camp.
tl;dr : Chrome is a quick hack job with minimal features, a shitty extentions API that can't block ads, that compromises your privacy for data mining purposes.
Why do people use it you ask? Because Google promotes it vehemently and idiots download it. Do some research anons.

Build your own. I'm doing that myself. But if you really want an ultimately cheaper all-in-one package, you can go with that. It's cheapest if you already have a computer laying around that you don't use and can install/configure FreeNAS with.
Honestly NASes are shit for storage speeds because they'll get bottlenecked by the network. Until they have 10GbE (or someone comes up with ethernet bonding that doesn't suck) they'll be slow as shit (especially a RAID NAS).

HDD's can only write at around 150mb/s, a "standard" gigabit network has a bandwidth of 125mb/s (1 gigabit). with a decent switch you're right.

Anyone else feel completely disassociated from current consumer tech trends?
There was time I used to buy a new laptop every year, and a new smartphone every 6 months. But now I haven't bought a new laptop in 7 years. Mostly because of chiclet keyboards which is an automatic deal breaker for me. I've also been using some tmobile re-branded android phone I bought for $39.99 after my galaxy s2 broke. With kitkat flashed on its functionality equivalent to the highest end phones being released today.
Seems like the entire industry is focused more on thinness and chic design more so than functionality or quality, but the actual technology hasn't progressed to provide any more real value.
