I just built my first pc. What are the essential programs I should download? I already got winrar, a torrenting program, and a media player. I'm mostly looking for an anti-virus program.

>>
VLC media player, Firefox 64/Waterfox, Steam.

Antivirus programs are memes, just get a javascript blocker (I use Ublock Origin)

If you're really dull and desperate enough to use antivirus, use NOD32. Everything else slows down your computer.
>>
Just stick to software from the official repos and you should be fine
>>
Check the sticked wiki.

Hey /g/, I am a total newbie to programming. Everybody is telling me to learn Python, but there is only so much you can do alone. Do you have any advice, how to go about learning programming?

Gotta guy on Craigs' selling an old PowerMac G5 for $75.
I'm a Windows-Linux guy, but hell, $75? It's IBM based and fancy metal.
I can at least bag it for tunes-vids-dabbling right?

$75 bucks is alright

What you really bought was the beautiful case and (if you wanted) the little stuff the internals can run

Hey Ni/g/gas so I got ahold of a defunct OG Xbox (capacitor juice ate through the mobo, so I skinned it) and are proposing 2 purposes for it. Either HTPC (Most likely) or a portable LAN party PC.

Yeah I know
>vidya >>>>>>>/v/

If y'all have any other suggestions, like actual productivity out of this project I'm eager to learn (Like I dunno some sort of server?) Life isn't always about vidya, netflix, and crunchyroll.

In your opinion what exactly would be a more rewarding route for me to go on? A scrapyard wars type of deal? Or simple APU build and get it over with?

I don't have any extra tech (besides my laptop's old hard drive) and none of my friends had an old build/spare parts to spare.

Main objective is to stuff it with decent internals (for whichever purpose it goes to) without sacrificing the looks of it.

And yes I will install Gentoo on it.

If you intend to get into electronics as a hobby, scavenge it for parts, desolder everything, look it up, label and store it and save the case, use it for whatever you feel you will actually be using, a media center or a NAS or whatever you like, it's a hueg case, doesn't seem very practical for anything involving the word 'portable'.
>>
>>51306739
Just do an apu build, that case will be to claustraphobic for anything else worth while

Not sure what private trackers are all about?

Check out the wiki and update it yourself if you want more instead of complaining like a fucking faggot. https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Private_trackers

Remember the following:
>staff occasionally read these generals and have posted here before.
>staff may pretend to be normal users asking for invites and when you invite them, they ban you for inviting strangers
>people may report emails and other personal info posted here to staff to get you banned.
>most of the invite offers here are people trolling you with false hope.
>begging for invites is a waste of time and you should just interview

The Teaching Company, they do lecture style courses in both video and audio format. There's also TMS, The Modern Scholar, their major competitor.

Good stuff once you narrow down to the topics that interest you. TTC is very ISP nastygram-centric, so avoid grabbing them from public trackers.

Found a wireless FM mic hidden in my office today. Looks similar to this.

I'm not in a position with sensitive information, and while I think I know who the culprit is, I'd like to discover any other devices planted around our office. I've left this one in place, fed it some false information to see if it's acted upon. What tools do I need to preform a proper sweep against listening devices? I'm worried that some of these might be hardwired into things like our wall sockets and other places, and I don't want to rip out the entire office space and leave traces that I've been searching. I would prefer if I could find the devices and leave them in place so they can be logged by our head of security.

Sorry if this is the wrong board for the question, but the internet is full of bullshit on the topic and I couldn't find anything on the /g/ wiki.

Almost certainly my current supervisor attempting to hold on to his job by catching my conversations. Other people have made accusations of knowing about stuff discussed between them and one other person, and I've got semi-proof that he's been reading the email of other employees, specifically our general manager.

I'm currently just a newer IT guy for this company, but I was hired on to replace this fellow eventually. This has caused him a great deal of stress, as he doesn't want to give up the position of head of IT.

>>51306564
I used to have an RF scanner, but I left it behind at my previous job some years ago. I also don't really have the experience in the field of detecting anything other than a wireless transmitter, so I wasn't sure if there was anything else I should be using to cover a larger range of bug types.

If you go with HP or Acer you're getting 2gb for $200 while the Asus model (below) has 4gb for the same price.
