Has anyone on /g/ attempted to use Linux without GNU? How was it?
I'm talking about a desktop or laptop install, shit like android or open-WRT doesn't count
You cannot run Linux without GNU

>linux without GNU
why?
Isn't Alpine Linux something like that?
So today I'm chilling in my IT class, and some kid starts talking about Bitcoin. My teacher hops into the conversation and says "I never want to see you mining Bitcoin. Do you know where the money comes from? You're mining stolen data and passwords to bank accounts. You're decrypting the data. It's illegal, you never know where the data is coming from." I was confused by this, and after a couple Google searches I didn't see anything supporting his claim. So /g/, is my teacher bullshitting, or is he legit?
>>54640656
He;s completely full of shit
Your teacher is a teacher
The truth is, nobody knows exactly where the data is coming from, your computer is just mindlessly bruteforcing hashes until it finds a match and that forms the next part of the blockchain.
Who knows, you might be contributing to breaking AES-256.
Is switching to Linux a good idea?
I have a laptop that came preinstalled win win10, the main reason I kept it was because of the games I pla, plus I'm used to windows, but I really want to use Linux, the main issue is the games. How many games is Linux missing when compared to windows? Is there some kind of statistic or something? If it wasn't too big, I might just switch, if I did, should I get Mint or Ubuntu?
>How many games is Linux missing when compared to windows?
Like 98% of them. Compare the Linux catalog on Steam to the Windows catalog.
>I want to use Linux
Then dual boot.

a few questions for you:
what games are you wanting to play?
do you have any experience with Linux?
how big is the laptop drive?
do you have experience with drive partitioning?

Ok so I've had my current desktop for about let's say a little under 6 years... I built it to play Skyrim on Ultra Settings and it pretty much worked fine... The only time my computer crapped out was when my video card started failing and I had to get a different one... It's literally the only other part I upgraded within the 6 years.
Mobo : Asus Crosshair Formula 4
Video Card: HD Radeon 7870
Ram: 8 gigs of Ripjaw ram (don't remember which ddr it is)
Heat Sink: CoolMaster Hyper 212 (This thing is freaking enormous and I definitely need to...

Add a GTX 480
It stays cool and has great performance!
Wait for new AMD CPU/GPU to come out
>>54639845
Well, I don't see any reason to upgrade yet if you don't need to now. You should be fine until it really starts showing signs of slowdown.
Maybe get an SSD for booting if you don't have one already?

How do you use your technology skills to make money, /g/? Trying to figure out a setup where I can make decent money while going to college. I have experience in circuitry, C, networking, and a tiny bit of java. Did you work your way through college, or did Ma and Pa give your way?

>>54639722
Got an alternative?
>>54639654
Depends on your school and your definition of "decent money" you could become something like a T.A. or a lab assistant, maybe try to become some prof's assistent in research or something.
You can also do homework and projects for money, or try to offer help to some companies or organizations.
There's freelance programming too. Just look around, anon
