Sup /g/. I haven't messed with programming since 2006. (I was a shitty c++ kid who never really learned) haven't built myself a PC since 2010. I used to be into tech stuff more but the new internet just sucks. I miss static websites and people who actually built things. I miss the old old hackaday.
The Internet is now a system that profits off normies. And I hate it. I hate clickbait.
I work as a carpenter now btw. I pay my bills and take care of myself, and I was going to spend this little windfall on a new rig. Install a distro on my old one, etc.
But...

Hulk Hogan is already doing critical damage to click bait journalism
Adblock even more so. The best you can do is install Adblock on every browser you can get a hold of.
That's cool but I still want to do this.
I'm getting approx $2000 USD.
That should be enough to get this made, open sourced, etc. I'd prefer a way to do it without a central server so it's harder to take down but the risks of a p2p app are equally bad.
also a way to set it up in a hardware firewall (I made one out of a 486 once lol) that does the HTML modification on the fly would be pretty sweet.
You'd do better to spend the money to start a trend of non-bullshit web pages.
Lead by example.
Nothing will get rid of clickbait. The best thing to do would be to provide a viable alternative.
Netflix has rolled out proxy blocking, which prevents people from viewing versions of Netflix that are outside of their country.
How long do you think It will be before most, if not all websites start blocking VPNs/Proxies?
>>53846419
You can thank the MPAA for that
Just use Popcorn Time. Set up a VPN if your ISP doesn't like that.
Boom - the more movies, for less the price.
Also you don't have to feel like shit - Stallman says that "They pay zero cents of your CD purchase price to musicians". There's no way that this doesn't also apply to movies.
>>53846700
> There's no way that this doesn't also apply to movies.
Er, sorry m8, but wat
A large group, or a company makes a film.
Usually only a person makes a song.
The person gets paid shit.
The company licences its films to netflix for n years, in exchange for lots of cash.
Why are there so many different Linux distros when they're all basically the same underneath apart from with different package managers.

Because some respect freedom and some don't
>>53846401
So you have a functional system out of the box with (hopefully) software that you'll use.
>>53846401
Because eventually a project becomes so large that either the sweeping change of a small group isn't going to be implemented fast enough or ever at all if things become too political.
Aside from that it can be used as a way to showcase a set of software pre-installed when it is a derivative work, it can be a technical decision in something unique like Gentoo or perhaps just a fun side project for someone like Crunchbang.
Priorities, technical decisions, philosophy and community all play large roles...

Does anyone know why Logitech M705 mouse has very poor tracking and what mousepad would you recommend?

Are Fractal Design cases even that good anymore? I know they used to be the pinnacle of silent, not autistic MUH LED'S pc cases but there seems to be a lot of competition out there with great aesthetic too. Phanteks for example seems to surpass Fractal in every way. Opinions?
>>53844435
my 2 cents is that theyre all glorified boxes, any cheap piece of shit with 2-3 fans is good enough as long as theres no short and everything fits
aesthetics are up to you but a $250 case like your pic is a fucking hilarious waste of money to me
It doesn't matter. Buy the case that you like the look of in the form factor you want that you can fit your hardware in.
>>53844435
I will never ever buy a case more than 50 dollars
Alright /g/, it's time I abolish myself from further use of this laptop nearing a decade of use, and move up the scale for a better one. Currently, I have glanced upon these 3 baby Newegg warlocks. Not too settled just yet, since there are possibilities of better deals elsewhere.

OP here, I have no favoritism with the graphics cards, however I do lean towards NVIDIA for their dominance level right now. Polaris is soon coming and that will re-level their cards from all the failure shit that has been occurring in the past few years with 1 to 2 cards each year. Apparently, there is already one fucking up due to the GeFORCE Experience insanity in its first quarter alone, so perhaps I will just remove that shit and not worry about it until the release.
I know this isn't a shill thread, but throw me a fucking bone here. If I'm about to settle for something, it better be able to handle heavy processes outside of just "gaymeeng", such as running two os's and overclocking certain applications for compiling and design. Will it be able to run a VM along with live coding OpenGL?
Why not build your own laptop?
Is there a difference between "factory-overclocked" GPUs and me over clocking a non-OCed GPU?
>>53843715
You will probably fuck up the hardware because they used cheaper/binned parts. Otherwise they would sell it at the higher clockrate. You may win the silicon lottery, or end up with an unstable OC that results in brick in a month.
>>53843715
factory overclocked has a warranty
you OC'ing voids a warranty
>>53843784
I have a Zotac GTX 970, and it came with firestorm for over clocking. Would I void warranty if I use their own software to OC? Doesn't make sense to me ..

What do you need?
So for several months my wii u can't play with other people online because my modem blocks the connection, the only way for it to work is if i assign my wii u a public ip but it keeps on coming up with the message that i have to renew it. Im super confused what do i have to renew?
Guys why are all my videos stuttering?
My CPU's at 29%. What's going on?
>>53842971
Are you using Windows? One of the big drawbacks to Windows, especially Windows +NSA, is that it actually doesn't have support for video playback. That's why all videos of any format stutter on every Windows platform. I recommend installing gentoo.
>>53842971
Look up CPU throttling. Could be you have a shitty Graphics Card.
>>53843066
Fuck off.
>>53843195
Nah, this notebook's played perfectly for over a year. It's just in the last week that it's been struggling with any video.
The last thing I installed was Kapersky, couldn't be that could it?
RDBMS
I'm trying to build a database for my families business. Im working on the conceptual ERD but I'm struggling with some tables. Was wondering if anyone had input. Fairly new to databases, but I'm having trouble in particular with the employee and day sheet tables.
>>53842870
go away before you regret it.
>>53842870
I think I might change the 'job' table to a 'site' table as its a construction company. Multiple employees will be working on different sites and on any given day that site might have a different combination of workers.
the day sheet table would be used to generate an invoice for the client and to keep track of employee hours for pay slips.
>>53842911
How would I regret it?
I have experience building computers but i've never made a water cooled PC yet. It's for my own use and my budget is pretty big.
Is it worth the trouble, even for enthusiasts?
>>53842666
In terms of thermals, not really.
In terms of quietness, depends. Get a good heatsink, slap some quiet fans on it and it can be okay.
In terms of space... depends on which you value; the space around the CPU & RAM or space in your case in general.
In terms of aesthetic, fuck yes.
Watercooling takes a lot of effort to set-up and maintain, and an all-in-one unit can make things fucking LOUD (I know, I've got a Kraken X61 and a Fury X - loudest AIO on the market for the X61, but does perform...

Unless you have the tip top SKU, ie 980 Ti / Titan X, it's not "worth" it.
The only reason it's "worth" it at the top SKU, is that it's the only way to get any more performance at all.
Example, and I'm using 980 Ti because Titan X's stock cooler is shit, these are average OC clocks with a samplesize of 17k users. Listing core boostclock
base: 1076mhz
air: 1391mhz
water: 1453mhz
So on average a 60mhz boost.
base to air -> 29.3%

Watercooled GTX 980, never goes above 50ºC.
Unless you're doing a full loop CPU+GPU and have money to waste don't bother.
Will there ever be a good web browser?
Firefox is going down hill
Opera killed itself years ago
Chrome is tracking central
internet explorer lack features and has an awful gui
Palemoon iirc is stopping delevopement
etc
>>53842622
I always found that Chrome was more of a RAM hog than firefox. What is wrong with Firefox though?
>>53842622
>Palemoon iirc is stopping delevopement
Not true. They are just re-building it from a later Firefox milestione or something like that IIRC.
But if you want a Firefox-based browser, it's honestly not that fucking hard to tweak Firefox to be useful.
Classic Theme Restorer and a couple about:config tweaks and you can fix both the UI and botnet in like five minutes.
>>53842622
>Firefox is going down hill
>Chrome is tracking central
Can't argue with that.
>Opera killed itself years ago
It's actually better than Chrome, despite its 0% market share.
