Hey /g/. Just found my old Latitude D-630. Core 2 Duo, 3 gigs DDR2, and 150 GB HDD. Windows XP runs slow as shit on this thing. What linux distro should I put on it for fucking around?

Do I really need 4 cores for programing as a student?
I need to make a decision on my old laptop, and I'm interested in a longer battery life and something lighter then 6 pounds. I'm willing to give up some power for it, but I'm finding most laptops use two core processors.
Do compilers really take advantage of 4 cores I have now or is it just using 1-2 cores? I'm not really finding information on what a compiler uses.
Are two cores a impediment to daily use? I've never had a dual core processor and I'm still in a bit of a shock that...

As a student no.
As a programmer yes. Being able to compile parts of a program in parallel cuts down on compile time significantly.
>>54296644
Remember the golden rule OP, if you don't understand it then you don't need it.
>>54296644
If you need an old laptop just get a Ivy Bridge i3 machine, put in a cheap SSD to boost battery life and you're set.
Anyone with a modern AMD graphics card can confirm this bug demonstrated here?

yep but I can live with that
7870 works fine for me, it remembers the framerate target
How do I get traffic on my blog?
I don't have the funds for advertising, so basically I'm looking for a DIY, non-spammy way to attract attention.

Blog about Miley Cyrus's tits and what magazine she got them out for this time.

Well, there goes your only chance.
>>54296259
You're a real wit, aren't you?
>>54296350
Spam is indiscrimate. I would be alright with targeted "spam," I just don't know how to do it, or where to go. I just end up creating social media pages and running into the same problem I had the first time.
What are some of your favorite libraries?
I like Python's NetworkX
Depends on what I need to do.
Eigen3 is pretty useful.
Qt is good too.
OpenCV is also good.
Depends on what you need to do really
NaCl
J-Jquery
Nomacs 3.2 is out.

>still using IrfanView with its proprietary license
>not using Nomacs with its benevolent, free license
Why do I need to use a javascript file to install it silently on windows?
That's so so weird.
>>54296151
>GPLv3
>benevolent
GPLv3 is pure cancer.
>>54296151
Nomacs is slow, bloated ass software with next to 0 configurability.
JPEGView is much better.
Why aren't you using BPG yet, /g/?
but the right side is still a jpg
No support, patent issues.
Because its not supported everywhere.
Good evening /g/.
I just started out doing Unity tutorials in order to learn more about programming games and just because, well, it's pretty fun, relaxed, and you can do it while baked.
Now I'm pretty new to making games (last time I did was making shitty shmups in Game Maker in like 2006) so I was wondering what is /g/s opinion of Unity?
I am really enjoying how integrated the actual programming is into the main IDE where I can drag my shit around and apply graphics and whatever but at the same time, I'm a bit concerned about it being proprietary...

Most of the time, if you change something in Windows, it will shit itself. Don't do it. Just dualboot if you want. Linux is the best for theming.

Hey /g i have to rebuild the circut board in my Record player, but im having a hard time identifying all the parts. Think you can help?
>>54295870
why are you rebuilding it?
heres a guide for the resistors
most other stuff looks like it could be googled to be honest, variable resistors are easy to replace and buy online, the capacitors may be difficult to source depending on what their farad ratings are
if you're re-building it from scratch, get a proper PCB made and organize that shit

I may switch to a Linux OS and I was wondering if there was a program on Linux that converts Windows files into Linux files.
>>54295611
>a program on Linux that converts Windows files into Linux files
you want to convert exactly what to what?
>>54295611
if you installed gentoo, yes.
These are called "flags".
libreoffice can convert a lot of your windows files, not all of them, but a lot.
dos2unix can convert your dos files if you have any
there are also a lot of files that you don't need to convert.
