Are those inconsistent? If "qualities" are qualities insofar as they're relative to / different from different qualities in other objects (including coordinate location), aren't the two definitions you give there basically identical?

Read it 12 or 13 years ago. Very impressive novel, but a bit too long, hence it's losing its purpose in the second part.
Also it's extremely "American"--you get a lot of paper for your money. But although I enjoyed it much, I'm not sure it was useful for me in any way (like a Dostoevsky novel, or even like a Houellebecq novel, can be useful).

“There are all kinds of courage,” said Dumbledore, smiling. “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom.”
Someone standing outside the Great Hall might well have thought some sort of explosion had taken place, so loud was the noise that erupted from the Gryffindor table. Harry, Ron, and Hermione stood up to yell and cheer as Neville, white with shock, disappeared under a pile of people hugging him. He had never won so much as a point for Gryffindor before. Harry, still cheering, nudged Ron in the ribs and pointed at Malfoy, who couldn’t have looked more stunned and horrified if he’d just had the Body-Bind Curse put on him.
“Which means,” Dumbledore called over the storm of applause, for even Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were celebrating the downfall of Slytherin, “we need a little change of decoration.”

I saw "You, Me and Everyone We Know" in 2009. It was okay, I guess. I'd never before considered reading one of her books, but a few months a ago my girlfriend bought collection of July's short stories. And just now I saw July under the female authors heading in the /lit/ recommended reading document: http://4chanlit.wikia.com/wiki/Recommended_Reading/Literature_by_type#Female_Authors
Is she worth reading? I value /lit/'s opinion more than I value my own life. If she is worth reading, recommend me something other than the short stories.

What is the method to write a story without having it lasting for hundreds of pages ?
write less pages

Use a smaller font or larger pages.
You can turn any full length novel into a short story. For example, if you wrote 300 pages but want a 30 page story, use only every tenth word. Make sure you're consistent with which tenth it is though, otherwise it won't make any sense.
