Because anti-intellectualism was the flavour and still is to an extent, people have been shooed away from books due to either having terrible teachers or they've been dumbed down so much through the media that they really can't grasp anything outside of basic YA shit. This is probably why so many people would rather be sitting in front of their arses all day on their computer watching someone else comment on a children's game rather than reading something enlightening.

Also because somehow reading and philosophy have had a negative image in the media, unlike STEM related jobs which are constantly praised and shoved down our throats in nearly every major blockbuster people are easily swayed away from pursuing degrees in literature and philosophy because they aren't really profitable.

Is anyone else interesting in living the Greek life? A plank of wood for a bed, a laptop, and a bunch of books is all I want.
Sure, I want money and a decent job, not as goals in themselves, but as a means to an end. A little bungalow, some weights, a bunch of books, and a steady income and I'm set for life. Have no interest in accruing items for the sake of conveying social status. It's a monkey game.
I don't think you know what the Greek life is, my friend. They would probably appreciate that there are enormous discoveries and revelations to be made, and that science is bringing us ever closer to important questions they bad. Don't strive for the lifestyle you're describing. I'm living it right now, and it's hedonistic and unfulfilling now matter how you look at it or how many good books you read.
It's your life, but you should wait until you're at least middle-aged to live like that. You're right that participating in consumerism...

Not everyone can write like Nabokov, I believe having a deep understanding of literary conventions, techniques etc. doesn't necessarily make one a great writer.
I sort of know what you mean. I had a Creative Writing class in my undergrad years and the professor there taught a lot of stuff, she really got me to improve, I enjoyed how she taught and perceive creative writing. So I went ordered one of her books and read it without letting her know. It was awful - some YA fantasy trash. I wasn't sure what to do, so I pretended I never read it.
Who's more right here, /lit/? Does using dictionary words instantly make you a better writer, or is it better if the words make you have feelings in their simplicity?
Communication is key. Both are fine, it's the eyes reading the words that matters most.
I prefer Faulkner, given my trip, but separating my partiality from the matter, I'm still leaning towards Faulkner's side. While you don't need complex words to illustrate most things, there are some ideas or concepts that only a complex word or complex words could address.
Anatole France, a fellow Nobel laureate, also searched for the mot juste, or the right word. He may have sent some of his readers to the French dictionary, but that's a little discomfort to the fluidity of his prose because he sought that right word.

What should I read before Wittgenstein in order to understand what the fuck he's talking about? Are there any good secondary sources to understand him?

He's writing at a time where formal logic is developed (the mathematical logicism project in Emgland/Austria in particular) and everything was ideosynchratic.
Working through a 200 page book about formal logic sure would be helpful.

My English teacher made our class read it over the weekend in our sophomore year of high school. Some of us complained about having to read a "whole" book in such a short time, but it really is the sort of thing you can read in a day or two and not really miss or overlook anything in.

Got a B.A in English last year, can't say it was much wasted money since I live in a country which has basically free Uni. Also I live in a non-English speaking country where it makes sense to learn practical skills in the future world language.
