Even though I mostly agree, you are in no place to judge either of them until you've read them in Spanish.

What are some books that would make me appreciate small things? I need some idyllic, comfy read.

Hey /lit/, I'm trying to familiarize myself with philosophy, and thought it'd be a good idea to read something that serves as an overall preview of philosophy, rather than to start right off with the pre-Socrates texts.
Which one should I read first out of pic related?

Read the Russell book. It is partisan, but actually engages with the philosophical content of each thinker. Durant was a pop historian, and had no clue about philosophy.

The best single volume history is Kenny (2012).
>>
Durant is surprisingly good and very readable. I think he's a great writer. It's good for a quick overview of some major modern philosophers at least. But his coverage of pre-modern philosophers is more of a character study than a synopsis, and he peters out after Schopenhauer and Nietzsche (as much as I like Bergson). Even his coverage of the latter is kind of skewed by the lack of critical distance and benefit of hindsight. Nietzsche became a lot more important soon after Durant wrote. But still, good overview.

Russell is better to read once you already know a decent amount about philosophy, because it's basically just an autistic pedant rambling about how everyone who disagrees with him believes silly things.

The best way to think about learning philosophy, when you're just starting out, is in terms of quantity and not quality. It's way better to just read a bunch of shit than to try to nail everything down from one "perfect" book. The whole process is so jagged and uneven, there are so many threads that need to be woven into one another, that there is just no way to learn philosophy completely "cleanly." You should still try to be rigorous about it, but don't feel bad about Wikipedia'ing Nietzsche, or reading Routledge "So You're a Total Dumbass" Editions Presents: A Very Short Introduction to Nietzsche, For Total Dumbasses.

How do you deal with the fact that you went to a non Oxbridge / MIT / Stanford / Caltech / Ivy League university and were surrounded by anti-intellectuals and had a much less rigorous curriculum for the entirety of undergrad?

It feels fucking awful to me. When I see giant university buildings I am in disbelief. These are monuments to a broken society that celebrates mediocrity.

My grandpa hasn't read a book in forty years and never set foot on even a community college campus. But he did work 60 hours a week most of his life to support his family and is a much better person than you. Go fuck yourself you arrogant little shit. Your classics degree isn't impressive no matter where it came from.
>>
It's much worse when you actually go to one of those schools and you're surrounded by rich cunts who are just as stupid as the poor pieces of shit you grew up with, except groomed to think they're all amazing elites and intellectuals.

I'd rather be back at my community college. I hate every one of these rich braindead yuppie faggots. Poor people may not be intellectuals either, but at least they aren't spoiled-rotten perpetual children. At least people at shitty colleges have no illusions that they are just getting professional training. Every worthless fucking prep school mediocrity at every fancy university just naturally assumes he's some kind of wunderkind, that the cushy job his daddymoney and infinite leisure time to "take two years off to think about what he wants to do next" will get him somehow qualifies him to put on airs of superiority.

It's all nouveau riche trash, all the time. They aren't even real aristocrats. I wouldn't even mind that. It's that they're all nouveau riche garbage, even if they're 10th generation money. They're rich proles with electric ass warmers.
>>
I don't feel bad, I can't blame myself for being born in a shithole where [mine] the best university is at max Top 100 World.

Guys, intellectually I'm all spooked out. I can't stand philosophy because of all the unfalsifiable garbage. Many fields like economics etc are just applied common sense and stamp collecting. I see novels as nothing but entertainment despite pretentious people claiming life / philosophical insights and tonnes of people will consider you a disgusting plebeian if you don't initially read shitloads of boring as fuck canon novels.

I think I am painfully adapting to the idea of the Internet age / information overload by abandoning any pretension that I can be an all rounder or even dilettante in everything. There are ten trillion books called "Introduction to [broad and important field]", even if you only have one of each field.

History is similar to novels. Shitloads of reading along with a shitload pretension thrown on top telling you that you truly cannot no nuthin unless you have an in depth understanding of the Greeks / Romans / Christianity / USA / WW1 / WW2 / financial systems / or shitloads of other topics I can't stand it. And then there's current events. I don't care about climate change, outer space, inequality, China, the EU, applied psychology, the education system, diversity, Russia, South America, refugees, nutrition, mental health, and more. Admitting just one of these would make me an iredeemable idiot, no doubt.

Has anyone else had similar thoughts? The spooks are powerful and must be removed but their removal leaves your mind in a promordial state that is more susceptible to spooks than before.

You use the word pretension a lot to deflect your own.

I think you're stifling your intellectual curiosity and potential, consciously or not, by placing yourself above the pursuit of knowledge. All, apparently, because of a perceived pretension.

You're a faggot, OP.

On a prose level his writing is garbage. He knows this and doesn't care -- it's all about plot and "magic systems" to him and his fans.

He's not even attempting to do anything I'd find interesting. I think most people here would probably agree.

dead?

desu, the trendy SJW feminist poets are probably the best. I know that seems like a troll but look at any poetry thread on /lit/ and watch yourself cringe. At least they seem to be getting somewhere and people actually enjoy it. /lit/ poetry aka white 20's male is just teenage angst balled out with the last poet they read.
>>
>>8092722
can you post some examples?

I am supposed to hold something resembling a TEDx talk about communication.
I remember in a VSauce video Michael mentioned a quote form a book I need the source of;
It goes something like "Women have the shit job at communication"
If anyone knows what the video I am talking about, it would be really helpful;
Thanks in advance.

All joking aside, I really also think this is the video you're looking for.
King Michael Stevens did something similar, I remember too, but if I remember correctly, he was heavily inspired by this video (i.e. he ripped it off).

I know that as a black fella at least, the abovementioned video empowered me quite a bit in embracing my gender.

Communication is important.
