What are /lit/'s thoughts on slam poetry as a whole?
13 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Lit generally dislikes it. Harold Bloom called it the death of art

The reasons I'm not a fan are that it rewards easy, immediate engagement rather than depth or complexity, the importance of rhyme is inflated, the current culture is all about oppression and mentioning that you are oppressed instantly makes your poem better, regardless of content, it makes art into a competition, and the fact that judges are chosen from the crowd makes for a weird system.
>>
It'll be forgotten before—well, I wanted to say before the end of this sentence, but that's not quite true. It'll be forgotten before the people who currently do it are dead. And they'll all be forgotten before they're dead, too.

Does anybody know of a book about the "ultimate" high class? For example, I remember reading stories about UK politicians that were involved in pedophile rings during Thatcher's government, or that guy "The Jinx", or that other pedophile ring -I think in Sweden- that had sex slaves, involved a lot of high-up people, and we only know about because one got caught by miracle and spitted it out. They seem so untouchable, so utterly disconnected from out reality. In my head they are invincible, they control the world, and I want to know how their life is, about their crazy sex parties, who they are, what do they do, how they got to be so powerful, etc. Of course it's all beyond secretive, but some account of it has had to come out somehow (akin to how there are leaks of private government files).

Ideally looking for factual accounts, hopefully not a novel.

They got to be so powerful and they're privileged to such taboo things exactly because they don't go confessing their sins to anyone.

Especially writers.

Of course.
It's full of good shit, even if you're just reading it so you can catch all the allusions other works make to it.

I have a little over 550 books that I own and haven't read/have only partially read.

Which means I've got nearly 100 per year since I started buying them that I haven't yet read. So probably yeah OP.

How do you get over the feeling of utter insignificance as an individual?
This feeling is especially strong when I'm reading philosophy, and sometimes fiction, because I'm just 1 person out of 7 billion(and counting) and I just feel a deep, slow anger because learning about shit just feels like a waste of time because I could be killed at any time or something.

Those lofty ideas just seem inconsequential when I'm just another cog in the machine.

I know my perspective is the only one that is supposed to matter but I can't really shake this feeling off.

for me it doesn't have an angering effect, but a depressing one. The feeling that your life, in the end, doesn't matter any more than one sand particle on the beach. But, I learn to live with my depression, mostly ignoring it.

>"In Antiquity, even the slave had hours of leisure and merriment that were all his own; he had his games of dice in the shade of the columns of his master's portico, his coarse jokes, his free chatter, his free life outside his daily routine".

>"The modern slave has not the privilege of loitering, completely carefree, for half an hour. His so-called leisure itself is either filled with almost compulsory entertainment, as exacting and often as dreary as his work, or -- in "lands of freedom" -- poisoned by economic worries. But he is not openly bought and sold. He is just taken. And taken, not by a man in some way at least superior to himself, but by a huge impersonal system without either a body to kick or a soul to damn or a head to answer for its mischief.".

Premises.
1. There exists an entity, G, that is omniscient.
2. If an entity is omniscient, the entity is sound (if the entity believes something, it is in fact true).
3. If an entity is omniscient, the entity is complete (if something is in fact true, the entity believes it).
4. The sentence S is defined as "G does not believe S is true"

Argument.
5. G is sound (1, 2)
6. G is complete (1, 3)
7. >> Assume S is true (Assumption)
8. >> G believes S is true (6, 7)
9. >> G does not believe S is true (4, 7)
10. >> Contradiction (9)
11. S is not true (Reductio from 7-10)
12. G does not believe S is true (5, 11, Modus Tollens)
13. G believes S is true (4, 11)
14. Contradiction (13)

Conclusion.
One of the premises is incorrect. Since 2, 3 are obvious, and 4 is just a definition, 1 must be incorrect. Thus, an omniscient God does not exist.

So the novel I am writing has a lot of shoot-outs in it, the characters are able to take on enemies and survive, but its by taking cover, using suppressive fire, flanking, etc..

I am curious how you would write such a combat sequence. Should I describe it blow by blow? How do I describe "he shoots at the enemy soldiers" without it getting repetitive as fuck?

Describing the sounds of the guns? I've tried using words like "barking" and "chattering" to describe the gunfire. But it's hard to insert it between lines of dialogue without feeling samey.

I dunno, anyone got any examples of well-written shootout scenes? My novel is probably a really lame story but I at least want it to be well-written lame story.

Rip off some famous military biographies. One Bullet Away, Storm of Steel, etc.

Focus on the tactical mindset. Where are they positioning themselves and why? How are they scanning the environment? How do they come out from around cover to shoot without getting shot themselves?

Was this book ever relevant to the general public? It's clear that, since it's release, it's been loved by poets, critics and prolly those people for whom literature is a major interest. But did it ever affect the general educated public in anything approaching the way that ... say, Shakespeare did?

I get the impression that this book might have been more prominent back when Christianity and poetry in general were more important to people's lives but I dunno.
