For everyone who doesn't "get" Infinite Jest, there's a reason. I implore you to read The Pale King first. It's much less tedious and a quicker read, and it truly explains his writing style and thought process. In fact I'm surprised that The Pale King isn't even mentioned on this board- it's such a pivotal work preceding Infinite Jest and really the Metamodernist movement, it should gain more momentum here.

I Like TPK, mind you; but did you make an error here, or are you referring to something other than writing/publication order?

the tension is killing me op no one's gonna hate you if you made a mistake

that is a lie several people will immediately mock you

Let me clarify. IJ was published before TPK, but in terms of comprehension and accessibility, I recommend reading Pale King first.

I'm working on a novel, and found these books interesting, as they are really short novels, and I'm at 13k words about halfway through my work.

Both works are less than 50k words, and wouldn't have even qualified for nanowrito.

Chuck also says that Fight Club is his retelling of Gatsby, so wanted to reread both one after the other to see if I got that vibe.

Also interested in that minimalist style Chuck was obsessed with early on

Another question would be: "How is he not worth reading?".

A proposition might be: "Ezra Pound may or may not be worth reading."

Is this a literal meme book?

I mean seriously, the only people I know who discuss it is /lit/, and even then people just make jokes about it. It has no serious criticism about it has won no worthy awards, and has no admiration from important literary figures at all.

>What kind of person is it who clamours for this meaningless desideratum, equality? Certainly not the beautiful person, because to him equality, if it could be achieved, would result in bringing him down to the common level. Neither can it be the person specially gifted in any of the arts and sciences; for, again, equality, if it could by some miracle be wrought, would amount to wiping out the advantage of such special gifts. The self-reliant, the strong, the skilful, the able and the desirable, in all walks of life, are never stirred by this cry for equality; because they look down from their eminence, and cannot therefore conceive that levelling could possibly prove an advantage.

>It must therefore be the undesirable, the unskilful, the incompetent, the ugly, the ungifted, in all walks of life, the incapable of all classes, who want equality. And they want it because, looking up from their position of chafing mediocrity and ungainliness, and beholding their more gifted brethren, they realise that equality must redound to their benefit. A moment's reflection would tell them that it is an impossible ideal; their mortified vanity, however, is stronger than their reason, and urges them to believe in it, ridiculous as it may be.

What did he mean by this?

I had forgotten about how great Ludovici is
>>
>>7507074
Did he actually say this?

He doesn't seem to understand what is meant by "equality." He thinks (childishly) that people who want equality want it in all aspects of life, they want it absolutely, they want it without question.

In reality, it's just people (women, racial, ethnic and religious minorities, sexual minorities, peasants and the working poor), who want equal treatment and equal opportunity.

No one is trying to cut apart the face of a pretty woman to make her average looking. No one is trying to break the legs of a professional athlete.

John Green has failed once again to understand and now he has unwittingly sided with a fascist understanding of the world.

where to even begin

Hey comrades, I had a question concerning literature in socialist countries. Are there any memorable works of fiction? Which would you recommend? I notice that there's an astonishingly low amount of mass media in socialist nations such as the USSR, Cuba or the DPRK. Or am I wrong and simply haven't looked hard enough?

Who else here /patrician/ parents?

I was raised by my mother but I moved out several years ago. Tonight I went back home for Christmas dinner and noticed that the dining room was lined almost entirely with many classic authors often praised here; titles which were basically invisible to me growing up. Only in the past couple of years, I started serious reading and discovered /lit/. She tells me that she also read Camus, Sartre and a few other French authors, in French. Holy shit, that is so based.

I've also recently been talking to my father about literature and found out that we've read tons of the same books. We were able to have hours of discussion about various novels and give each other some recommendations. I feel like I've been blind for 27 years of my life but I've realised that my parents are fucking awesome thanks to /lit/.

Merry Christmas

>"Why are breakfast foods breakfast foods?" I asked them. "Like, why don't we have curry for breakfast food?"
>"Heinrich, eat."
>"But why?" I asked. "I mean, seriously: How did scrambled eggs get stuck in with breakfast exclusivity? You can put bacon on a sandwich without anyone freaking out. But the moment your sandwich has an eggs, boom, it's a breakfast sandwich."
>Dad answered with his mouth full. "When you come back, we'll have breakfast for dinner. Deal?"
>"I don't want to have 'breakfast for dinner,'" I answered, crossing knife and fork over my mostly full plate. "I want to have scrambled eggs for dinner without this ridiculous construction that scrambled eggs-inclusive meal is breakfast even when it occurs at dinnertime."
>"You've gotta pick your battles in this world, Heinrich," my mom said. "But if this is the issue you want to champion, we stand behind you."
>"Quite a bit behind you," my dad added, and Mom laughed.
>Anyway, I knew it was stupid, but I felt kind of bad for scrambled eggs.
