No, he's outright giving the advice that you shouldn't fuck illiterate plebs. It's not to imply all book nerds fuck constantly.

Russian, Orthodox Christianity, the Greeks

Serious question, besides the wiki obviously, how do you guys find new books to read? Is goodreads a trustworthy website for lists and recommendations? It seems like they are good for some things but very lacking in others (for example you can find massive lists of general history books but a search for "Japan history" or "Eastern history" lists turns up nothing. also they often mislabel historical fiction as non-fiction).

Please forgive my newfaginess.

LibraryThing's tagmash system has been my best resource for finding specific subsections of shit to read for years now.

You start with, say, Russian literature:

www.librarything.com/tag/Russian+literature

What if you want surreal Russian literature?

https://www.librarything.com/tag/Russian+literature,+surreal

Or poetry?

https://www.librarything.com/tag/Russian+literature,+poetry

Obviously the books aren't always applicable to both things, since it's relying on user tags, and users don't always know best, or might have just accidentally tagged it that. But it's a perfect jumping off point. This also doesn't assess quality.
>>
>>7429948
It it's serious non-fiction, a good book usually has an index of literature quoted or used in the back, providing a starting point for further reading.

I have friends who read and constantly recommend and discuss books, and I read the book reviews in magazines, so if anything it's harder to prioritize all the promising titles that I hear about.

I'm tired of looking up words on my kindle and finding that they are not available in the default dictionary. Does anyone have a far more complete dictionary that they are using on their ereader?

Just bought these 28 new books. Had to get two of my assistants to hold the stacks so they didn't slide off my Ferrari "Book-Mobile." I always buy multiple genres of books: biographies, history, charity, business, fitness, & self help - be eclectic, be yourself.

The depth of your knowledge base is the best predictor of your future.

Has /lit/ ever tried this creativity trick? grab two unrelated books and lay in bed and flip between reading them both.

Watch how the ideas bounce around and produce brand new concepts.

Also, /book haul general/

I'm interested in becoming a successful writer and I've heard that most of them are polyglots.

At CC atm, but headed to UT Austin in the spring. I took Spanish in high school, but want to learn a language that will force me to think about language in different ways.

I'm leaning toward German rn.

Sort of cart before the horse here. You learn other languages so you can read other languages, not as some hack to better writing
>>
>>7429823
learn latin or ancient greek. it will definitely change the way you think about language and will expand your vocabulary

So, I finished reading Ivanhoe, and I quite enjoyed it (Even if it is too bad he had to choose boring Rowena over delicious Rebecca).

I'm in the mood for more knights and chivalry.

What other books should I read? Also, is there any book that serves as manual for knights? Some sort of western Hagakure?

Le morte d'arthur is literally THE medieval chivalry book.

The Once and Future King is a comfy, fun retelling of it.

So I just read all three short stories/novellas from the New York trilogy and I was absolutely blown away

Auster is like Murakami, but actually good and compelling and creepy

what should I read next by him? I did really enjoy the mystery/crime/post-existentialism of the NY trilogy and I would like to read more with that vibe, but I would not be opposed to his other works

The Invention of Solitude, his first book, a memoir, is really good. I recommend going there next. You can read it in a day. Leviathan is also pretty good, as is Invisible, which I read while visiting Tokyo recently. Thinking about it conjures up happy memories of reading while taking the subway all over the city.

Dear Aristotle:
YOUR COCKSUCKING BOOK HAS REDUCED ME TO A GIBBERING MAN-APE WHOSE ONLY RESORT TO DEALING WITH THE ALMIGHTY loving GRIEF IT'S BESTOWED UPON ME IS TO SCREAM AND HURT MYSELF.

Seriously, I am jumping up and down and throwing my shit in handfuls at the loving wall in some impotent primal effort to get the thing to make sense. I have been sitting here trying to enjoy your book - YOUR BOOK, YOUR COLLECTION OF ESSAYS, YOUR CONTRACT BETWEEN AUTHOR AND READER THAT THE READER WILL ENJOY YOUR PRODUCT - but instead the fucking thing's been crawling out of my hands and taking warm shits in my gaping eyes, Swear to god, you should have just added a little door to the front cover through which a hand pops out and flips me off, because I am insulted that your editor or publishers or whatever brainless shitstove three genes short of a monkey FAGNUT prints your books through thought that a person with more than a single loving digit IQ could enjoy "On Poetics" INSULTED

WORK WITH ME HERE: The goal's simple enough!Read the first line Hey, that's fine, it's just like any of Plato's works; not a problem! Only deal is your cross-eyed tongue-slapping ass decided to give the obscure meaning every single fucking line possible

HURRR, you say. THAT'S JUST THE CHALLENGE. IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EASY. Well fuck that noise, you lopsided frankenfaced fuckfurter.

Tell me, please, why does the BOOK have to win? Huh? What happens when the book wins and I lose? Is there some huge fucking kegger waiting for it when it gets done? Is there money involved? Or perhaps the motives are more sinister. Maybe the book's family is being held hostage by another book and that book has it's cock in Nicomachean Ethics's wife's mouth and he's holding a cell phone up to her and Nicomachean Ethics can hear her pained moans and cries for help and the asshole book then says, "You beat that cock-sucking human, or I'll blow her brains out." I COULD UNDERSTAND THAT. I CAN BE SYMPATHETIC.

It's not any fun if I can't understand, you faggot. I want to move on. I want to unlock whatever piece of shit platitude you have hidden away from me so I can start philosophizing and living the literary lifestyle. When your book prevents me from fully enjoying the product I have bought you have failed in your fucking mission to deliver a book. You lose! You break the contract! You contract the gay and fucking DIE DIE DIE.

What's the point of reading old books if the settings and themes are so far removed from our modern world that there's really no way of connecting with them? We live in an age of the internet and social media, and nothing in, say, The Odyssey, relates to that, so what's the point of reading it if it has nothing to do with the most influential and relevant things in our lives?
