What does /lit/ like to listen to while reading? (I tried asking /mu/ but they're mostly plebs who have no experience reading)
I live in a shitty apartment with thin walls, you can always hear some combination of street traffic and obnoxious neighbours.
As such I've taken to listening to music while reading and studying to block out the noise.
I've been mostly listening to Chopin and Ambient (Stars of The Lid, The Dead Texan and A Winged Victory for The Sullen are favourites) but I'm starting to grow bored. Any recommendations?

I used to listen to Stars of the Lid for every single book I read. It does get boring.
Personally I can't listen to classical or anything like that as it's too distracting so I stick to ambient.
Try The Caretaker - An Empty Bliss Beyond This World, William Basinski, and Gas.
Also Rubycon by Tangerine Dream.

Out of curiosity, how many of you guys read the harry potter series? I bought the first 2 books when i was 9 at a book fair and I just couldn't get into them. What do you think of them nowadays (if you read them as a kid)? A girl I knew in high school read them for an English project and I thought personally it was plebish to do kids book in high school but maybe i'm missing something.

Patrician here, I read them when I was a kid. I think if one thing stands as memorable it was the atmosphere developed around the castle. They are definitely 'comfy' books, but yeah, the idea of examining them academically is questionable unless you are specifically investigating YA

If I give my mother specific titles she will buy "similar" so that it will be a surprise, if the book is about ww2 she will get me bill o'reilleys book on hitler. If I get her lists of award winners or something she will buy me books by female authors or classics that ive already read.

I currently reading this book. I'm now on chapter eight, but I haven't gotten the spirit yet. It hasn't been exciting me. It gets better? If not, I'm going to drop out of it and start to reading a GarcÃa Márquez novel.
wow, I read it when I was 17 and I loved every second of it. It definitely gets better as you go on, but I suppose this book isn't for everyone.

Where am I supposed to meet people with an interest in literature, the arts, and philosophy? I've managed to carve out a pretty wide social circle for myself over the past few years, but it primarily consists of people who just want to drink or smoke all the time. Those activities are fun and certainly have their time and place, but I want some patrician friends as well.

There are plenty of women that read but they are almost always consumers of best sellers and sympathetic low-lit novels. Sometimes they will read something good (my mom shocked me reading death comes for the archbishop) but mostly the top tier is Franzen.
There are very few men I know who read other than news. The nerds i hung out with in hs read forgotten realms and warhammer stuff, and some of the guys in college were into GRRM, and some of the medical residents I know will read something...

I've had the same issues. Back in high school, I made a friend who liked to read and we had half our classes together so we'd literally made sure we had the same book and read it so we could talk about it the next day. We were girls so we read the Divergent and Hunger Games crap. Eventually I grew out of it and started reading classics, and I found another 2 other friends to talk /lit/ but they both were beyond my level at the time, so I just stuck to forums and reviews to help me talk about /lit/.

Currently half-way through Circe and it might just be my favourite chapter so far. Cyclops was absolutely great as well.

I forced myself through Oxen of the Sun. The last few pages of that chapter were fun though.

Circe is incredibly fun. Bloom being crowned Emperor of Dublin is absolutely hilarious.
I understood absolutely nothing about the last few pages of Oxen of the Sun. With the earlier styles I could maybe get the gist of some of it, but when Joyce starts writing in future English slang I might as well have been reading Greek.

Ithaca. Easily the most emotional chapter of the book. The juxtaposition of that with the cold scientific language just really worked somehow. It was just a relatively easy read while somehow still being quite beautiful. Second favourite would probably be Cyclops, it was just funny.

Definitely Oxen. It was a slog. I didn't mind Proteus as much but I didn't get very much from it. Proteus really annoyed me for a lot of reasons. Steven was building up a whole reading...
