Is it really necessary to read about Greek mythology before reading Greek philosophy? I read that one should start with, reading Mythology by Edith Hamilton, but I feel a little anxious having to get through 400 pages of mythology.

Literary critic and scholar Bill Barbrady once famously stated upon completing the book, "At first I was happy to be learning how to read. It seemed exciting and magical, but then I read this: Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. I read every last word of this garbage, and because of this piece of crap, I am never reading again!"

While it was very daring in Khruschev's Soviet Union to come out and say that Stalin was just as repressive and blood thirsty as Hitler, it isn't exactly revelatory in the present day.

I forgot to say the parts about the Battle of Stalingrad were pretty intense. Particularly that one building the Germans couldn't drive them out of.

/lit/, I am painfully slow reader. Can you give me any advice? Just as an example I read 70 pages of a nonfiction book in about 4 hours yesterday. I've heard "don't subvocalize" before, but I don't know what to change. Do you still perceive the sound?

just focus on the sound of your breathing while reading, and you won't subvocalize. It works for me, but I still subvoc because I'm a plen

I have to say that this is one of the most interesting and most dull books I've ever read. Joyce touches on some interesting topics, but boy is he a slow writer. You sometimes have to sift through 50-60 pages of nothing to get to something interesting, but I was glad that I read it to the end. What do you think /lit/?

only fucking good part of that book was

The personality of the artist, at first a cry or a cadence or a mood and then a fluid and lambent narrative, finally refines itself out of existence, impersonalizes itself, so to speak. The esthetic image in the dramatic form is life purified in and reprojected from the human imagination. The mystery of esthetic like that of material creation is accomplished. The artist, like the God of the creation, remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails.

I found it boring at first, it became interest from the second chapter.

I think it's a failure because the author fails to fully reveal the inner life of the protagonist to the reader. This is because of the autobiographical form of the novel coupled with the fact that his life is unremarkable. The only interesting event is his flirtation with the Church.
In good art there is a correspondence between the outer and the inner, e.g. in ancient Graeco-Roman art the descent of a man into Hades serves as an outward sign that can signify an inward event (despair, depression, inner-turmoil, etc.) Even in modern art this correspondence can take place between the event of the plot and the inner life of the characters. This is what T. S. Eliot called an "objective correlative", i.e. something objective that correlates with the subjective life of the character - the object gives the reader something to draw his attention to which unveils the inner workings of the character's mind. Otherwise the character's subjectivity will remain forever sealed-off. Joyce tries to artificially unveil this subjectivity through his moments of "epiphany" in the novel, but this is artificial and unsatisfying. It doesn't work. We as readers can't experience this tide of raw emotion that Stephen feels without some "objective correlative" to make it present to us. Imagine if Keats tried to write a poem about antique beauty without reference to a Grecian urn or any concrete object.

People who say that there are no moral truths or that morality is relative ought to be executed or exiled by the State, as those who do not accept any moral authority as being above human opinion cannot be trusted to obey the civil law, nor can they be trusted not to pervert the civil law to their own ends if put in positions of political or judicial authority.

And, obviously, any academics that teach such positions in any setting other than "devil's advocate" ought to be removed from their positions and stripped of their degrees/doctorates as a form of public disgrace.

Really. For most wanna-be writers I've talked to, it's the other way around. They spend all day thinking about the most complex plot and setting and all these characters with varied personalities and backstories, but when you ask them about what themes they want to explore, they just come up with a blank.

Okay, so everyone on this page says that you're supposed to start with the Greeks, and I'm perfectly willing to do that, but between that , and the Old Testament, I intend to read some Ancient Egyptian, and Sumerian literature in order to both get a better grasp on the influences both of that book, and on the Greek canon, as a lot of their stuff was stolen from/built on the Egyptians. With the Greeks, it's fairly easy, follow one of the various lists beginning with Homer, and ending with Aristotle, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of unified "Egyptian Canon", could anyone educated on the topic help me to construct one, or at least give me some recommendations of the more influential? Philosophy, Mythology, or outright fiction allowed.
