How do I know I'm understanding literature? I'm reading pic related in its original language (I'm a ruski) and I'm halfway through now. It seems very difficult to apply what the underground man was talking about at the beginning to his stories, especially when I can't even be sure that what he is saying isn't all lies or entirely accurate

So far, I'm only getting the idea that he is arguing that the reason he is so neutral and inoffensive is because he find footing in reason to justify really becoming anything. then he is talking about free will bring an illusion regardless because of the "wall" of laws of nature?

If this isn't all stuff you could figure out by yourself, then you're not understanding it.

I think all of these sorts of things dance around the fact that the is-ought problem will never be solved and we have no idea what we really should do and there is no theory of everything.

socrates was right, we cannot know anything.

Zizek sums it up in the below video, while inadvertently showing how his entire philosophy (and all philosophy) is BS.

I have a question about Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.
There is a certain character in the second book, who introduced himself as Magnifico the clown, who had a specific appearance.
Could Isaac Asimov as a biochemist base "scarecrow anatomy" on real-life symptoms?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I've read the series and am interested in talking about it but I have no idea what the fuck you're asking.
>>
>>8143681
Magnifico is The Mule, right? I think his name changed on the recent pt-br translation.
>>
That's his alias before it is revealed that he is the mule.

Amazon. There's book stores in my area but I don't have a car, and even if I did I don't think I'd feel comfortable driving all the way through the city to get to the store on the other side of town, it's a huge trek.

It's summer. Nothing more wonderful and enriching than reading in nature.

My recommendations,

Suttree by Cormac McCarthy
Call of the Wild by Jack London
Evangeline by H.W. Longfellow
Essays by Thoreau

I don't read much anymore and I hope to change that this summer.

Share your /out/lit/ recommendations!

Why do people associate being able to read very quickly, and high intelligence?

I work with a girl who is arguably smart, but she does, and says, really stupid things all the time.

She has no basic common sense skills whatsoever, yet she told me she read an 850 page book in two hours....

She lied or she skimmed and didn't retain. Or you've met some sort of super genius who's really saying a whole bunch of super smart things you just can't keep up with.
>>

>I work with a girl who is arguably smart, but she does, and says, really stupid things all the time
maybe you think she does and says stupid things because you are the stupid one there? it happens pretty often
>>
>>8143498
No.....

She couldn't figure out how to make a pedometer work. There was a paper tab that disconnected the battery from the device, so the battery could keep it's charge. She could not figure this out.

She also thinks Jane Austen is a great writer.

MOAR like this.
<

Also, attach a brief reason as to why to read (attention spans come and go.)

P.S. No bit-tier Camus works... this is his only acceptable book

Can you elaborate on why this work is better than his others? I've started getting into him recently and would like some references as to why one work over another.
>>
Stylistically it's his best work. On every other level The Plague exceeds it.
>>
>>8143323

I can, but won't.

In The Fall is the best plot, and dialog worth keeping. You can go through your Camus-fix, but you wont find a better book by him.

This is not what this thread was about

God I fucking hate myself for falling for this meme ass series. The first three were entertaining and I ran through them fast but this motherfucker right here. This piece of shit is straight up torture. I'd rather read a text book backwards than finish this meandering mess of a book.

Martin's editor should be shot.

Cersei's chapters are great though. The most comedic part of the whole series.
>>
>>8143217
Yeah, the reason this one sucks ass is because we don't hear from any characters we care about, it's just about random, unimportant, pretty shitty characters. Especially Hotah.

What is the draw of vonnegut? I have had slaughter house five on my shelf for years, and I never got very far.

I have read Nabokov like Lolita, Pnin and Pale Fire and the elements of sick irony and satire were obvious and still held meaning today.

What am I missing about vonnegut?

He's witty. Cynical, but in a kind of cheesy way. His characters all have hearts. Even the antagonists. He can be dark, but exclusively with a message. Very grandpa-ish. Cozy, idealistic, purple, and sad-but-optimistic. Like Bradbury.
His books are worth reading, but I wouldn't take them as seriously as Nobokov or any classic lit for that matter
>>
>>8143171
hmmmm

So basically Lolita set my "satire of 20th century america" bar too high with its 100% selfish, human, and evil characters.

Whats with all this space aliens from word salad planets stuff?
>>

He is easy to read. Reading him requires little effort. Reading him still gives an impression of depth. You may not find him as easy to read in a certain case. That certain case is one in which you are used to good writing. Under that certain case, you also no longer get the impression that his writing creates depth. This might happen even if you like penis jokes.

Is it still worth it to major in English/Creative Writing if I want to become a fiction writer? For context, I'm planning to double major in Music (which is non negotiable) and something humanities related, but I want to make sure that I pursue the right path to become a writer. Would it be more beneficial to use the time reading and writing on my own, or majoring in philosophy to help better my "ideas"? I've heard a lot of crap about English as a major, and want to spend my time as efficiently as possible, so I'm a little reluctant about fully committing to it. What do you semen demons think?

Of course fucking yes.

A good literature major would be great to have, but judging by the stories there literally is no such thing in the US, and possibly even abroad.
>>
>>8142997
Oh yeah, and the creative writing part of your question, obviously the answer was "no"
