Recently read this and really loved it. I plan on getting into his other work, but I can't find any copies near me now. Any other writers that write fiction as compelling as this that are around the same difficulty level? I'm a pretty substantial pleb.

I'd also be down for recs for fiction that might be able to help be a bridge into more difficult works.

>a pretty substantial pleb

why are people so hard on themselves?
sure you're entry level af in terms of proper literature
but in terms of general fiction readers you are superior to 95% of readers
>>
other than some famous examples fiction isn't difficult. Really just a matter of patience and having the correct approach. if you really loved Stoner you are good on the latter

Where to go after reading the greeks? lmao
I plan on reading the Tanakh, Bible and Quran, but I'm pretty sure the jewy stuff was happening at the same time as the greeks so my timeline is already fucked up, and wouldn't reading the Christian stuff and the Roman stuff at the same time be kind of confusing?

>It's difficult to love a woman whose vagina is a gateway to the world of the dead...

>Steve is madly in love with his eccentric girlfriend, Stacy. Unfortunately, their sex life has been suffering as of late, because Steve is worried about the odd noises that have been coming from Stacy's pubic region. She says that her vagina is haunted. She doesn't think it's that big of a deal. Steve, on the other hand, completely disagrees.

>When a living corpse climbs out of her during an awkward night of sex, Stacy learns that her vagina is actually a doorway to another world. She persuades Steve to climb inside of her to explore this strange new place. But once inside, Steve finds it difficult to return... especially once he meets an oddly attractive woman named Fig, who lives within the lonely haunted world between Stacy's legs.

No. It's not that, because if it was that, it'd be going against the grain of the genre. In fact, it's shit in its own genre simply because you can make sense of it.

I got into trying to do philosophy on my own because I realized I always tend to see both sides of a perspective which results in an inability of deciding on anything. I'm trying to develop a world perspective but I never went to university so I don't know how to approach research from a scholarly perspective.

Any recommendations on books about how to do research? Where do you go for reliable statistics? What are reliable statistics? How do you research other than a simple google search?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
What are you wanting to research?

I took psych in university. I was basically taught that if something is not a peer approved article published in a scholarly journal, it's worthless.

But then I also took a ton of history courses, and used various academic sources, but often times also used books that I got from my local library.

It all depends on the subject I guess. The worst thing about leaving university was losing access to the schools resources and academic journals.

Use scihub.org to get academic sources that a locked behind university paw walls.

and that link is wrong, use sci-hub.cc/

>I don't know how to approach research from a scholarly perspective.
If you are interested in studying philosophy and doing so from a scholarly perspective, 1) go to university, but 2) read secondary resources. These are academic texts and journal articles that you can, by hook or crook, find on the internet for free. There is the stigma in (non-academic) philosophy of avoiding anything but primary texts, but to properly understand any but the simplest primary works you must build up a basis of philosophical knowledge/history and read commentary and interpretation from scholars.

> Sources examining the classified 28 pages of The 9/11 Commission report reveal that writer Don Delillo has been allegedly implicated in the orchestration of the September 11th attacks. Confidential sources allege the writer is the main focus of the classified pages which many are calling for Washington to make public.

> The controversial American writer, known for post-modern novels dealing with terrorism and nihilism has been alleged to have links to groups such as Al-Qaeda and Al-Asma and had potentially laundered literary prize award money. Sources will not disclose Delillo's exact role in the attacks but will say he had been subject of a long-standing FBI investigation which may still be on-going. The novelist's publicist has declined to comment and the author cannot be reached via social media.

> While his novels have been staples of college courses on Post-Modernism and Critical Theory, they are no stranger to controversy. In 1988 George Will in The Washington Post decried Delillo a "bad citizen" and described his novel Libra as "literary vandalism." Characterized by cold and dense language, his novels are populated with characters obsessed with themes of conspiracy and political violence. Delillo writes in his novel White Noise, "All plots move deathward."

> Delillo has established a cult following, especially among internet users, and many are questioning his possible motives and pointing to references in his novels that allegedly predict the September 11th attacks.

> One literary forum poster writes: "Read his books. It's right there. Either bin Laden or Donald Rumsfeld was reading Delillo. And I don't know if that's a bad thing." Others paint a more disturbing image: "I can think of only one other writer has gone out and killed so many people just to increase book sales. And that man's name was Adolf Hitler."

Why can I only enjoy books written (or translated) in my native language?

I've been living in the UK for 15 years now, and I find my self paying twice as much (or more) for imported books.

Does any one else feel this way?

Portuguese, which is really sad. 6th most spoken language in the world. Still, France and Germany still manage to have more translations than we do.

I genuinely do not undertand how people with no artistic sensibility can withstand the gut-punches modern life throws at us at a daily basis. If it weren't for art, or creation in general, I would have ended myself.

Would you have ? I was reading Rilke recently, and he gave the following advice to Kappus : that if Kappus could not live without poetry (which means, killing himself if he couldn't write), then he truly was a poet. What do you think about this ?

These new memes represent an entirely new school of literary thought for us to idolize, and a refreshingly daunting example that we can use to appear superior to other boards.

Even as someone who's had a passing (mostly nostalgic) enjoyment of the Harry Potter mythos, I couldn't give less of a shit about this. based on context alone It doesn't feel at all like it's intended to be a genuine continuation, and it isn't even written by JK. A cash grab, through and through.

Let's talk about our favourite essay writers.

>Joan Didion
One of the most lucid and well written American authors I've had the pleasure to read, I think her essays showcase the "idiosyncratic objectivity" that'd become a staple of contemporary journalism - her self awareness (like in her Migraine/Anxiety piece) is equally inactual.

>Hunter Thompson
Unduly characterized as a "drugs lmao" hack, his insight on the American Dream in the "year of our lord 1972" is profound and descriptive (in opposition to normative), while also informed by modern philosophy. I'd recommend reading Fear and Trembling before Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. His political journalism is equally, if not more, interesting.

>Elias Canetti
While I'm yet to finish Mass and Power, I feel confident in saying that his short form essays are more than worthwhile (and bleakily funny) - ie, his dissertation on Speer's diaries.

>William Burroughs
Great stylistic rendition of well, himself, since he's often the basis of his essays. Interesting when trying to expand and how an essay can be written.

I'd like to hear a few recs, this kind of writing is usually incredibly interesting.

There is one and only: Montaigne. Now you can close this thread.
>>
>>8106478
Well, that's somewhat reductive - at least expand on the author.

By the way, I'll add

>Cora Diamond
Wrote mainly in relation with Wittgenstein, her main collection is "The Realistic Spirit: Wittgenstein, Philosophy, and the Mind"; she writes about what it means to be human and how immagination is the foundation of com-passion, or the basis of empathy - essentially that to fully realize another's humanity, you need to fully understand his/her capability to exist as that peculiar human, with his/her fundamental accidents.
>>
I don't read essays, but you have good taste in music, op.
