What's up, native dunces. I'm from Russia and my knowledge of English is indescribably shitty. However, having lately freaked out due to longing for a good English read and having not as yet endeavoured to read something, I said to myself, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! So I decided on taking a stab at reading that fucking Orwell first. To tell you the truth, the very first chapter of 1984 was so bloody hard to read! I've scored over 100 unknown words aside from phrasal verbs along with not quite understandable sentences. Now my passion's dying down slowly and I'm beginning to feel so devastated. What do I need to do, choose something way much simpler or try to memorize those words and reread chapters over and over again till I get a hang of them? Do native speakers consider his novels as difficult read? Incidentally, I've been studying English only for 1 year and 7 months by now. Naturally, all by myself.

maybe if you're 13 years old. It probably is not the best for a beginner.

Try his essays, they are all online and there is even a site with russian translations so you could read them side by side. His non-fiction is better than his fiction.
I'm an edgy depressed teenager that listens to sad boy music all day and drinks coffee and watches foreign films and cries in the dark all day.
What are some books that I should read? I've mainly read high school reading list stuff. I liked Frankenstein, Heart of Darkness, and The Good Earth.
Just listen to Crywank and tell everyone you read Proust for 5 more years.
Also fuck off

I've never listened to Crywank nor have I read Proust.
Thanks anon.

Define "Existential Crisis"
>>8070189
An existential crisis is a moment at which an individual questions the very foundations of their life: whether this life has any meaning, purpose, or value.[1] This issue of the meaning and purpose of existence is the topic of the philosophical school of existentialism.
>>8070183
I think Nietzsche made the point in 'Human, All Too Human' that a world in which "God is dead" will essentially lose its biggest metaphysical foundation thus far.
Welcome to that world.
Why I never see any thread about Latin literature posted here?
I know you anglofags are always concerned on postmodernism and other philosophical thoughts of this kind, but that's why I see so often people assuming dichotomous views or being too self assured.
You all guys need some Horace and a lot of Metriotes in your life.
Everything good about the Romans, they stole from the Greeks.

Virgil's Aeneid is great.
/lit/, I've decided I'm going to finish writing some YA fantasy crap that I came up with in my teenage years. I still have all the notes, drawings, and drafts, and I think the plot is solid enough for the purpose. There's plenty of strong, female characters, the antagonist group is entirely xenophobic, and the protagonist has plenty of undiscovered childhood trauma that I can slowly milk dry and use to keep the story going without too much effort from any of the main characters, just like Rowling did with Harry Potter.
Can anyone give me advice on this? Has anyone here ever attempted such a thing? I'm convinced that if I get some key themes and character arcs right, all I have to do is come up with shit like pic related, and all the 14-yo girls will remember my book as the first time they got properly wet. I'm even willing to add a homosexual character (trans is a bit much for the setting, but I might be forced to do so if the edgy-character/word count ratio isn't sufficiently high), and some of my other ideas include:
>girl in protagonist group was sexually abused and will therefore make completely irrational choices that create tension and crises to keep the story interesting when the plot isn't moving
>girl in protagonist group is blind, but very sassy and confident, and capable of doing without effort that which the protagonist has great trouble with (later we find out that she wasn't born blind, but actually lost her sight through some kind of traumatic event, and she'll drop her tough persona for a while to be exposed as actually sensitive)
>the antagonist in the first part of the book turns out to be a childhood friend, and the real antagonist is actually the xenophobic capitalist establishment
>one of the protagonist's friends dies somewhere 3/4th through the book, causing the main character to become gloomy, mature, and careless, which will cause him to make some ethically questionable decisions during the climax
(cont.)
What I need to know is, what are the next steps after I finish writing it? There will be plenty of platitudinous observations such as pic related, unnecessarily complex self-reflection, and imaginary struggles, so I think I got most of it down in terms of writing, but I wouldn't know where to go once it is finished. I'm thinking it is best to publish it (in parts) on some YA/fiction/blogger site to see if there's interest, and then try pull a 50 Shades of Grey. Does anyone have any recommendations for such sites? I'm looking for an audience that is predominantly female or otherwise void of wit, and I want the community to be such an intellectual vacuum that every single comment reads something along the lines of "I absolutely LOVED this". I will then use this audience to ensure that my synthetic tumour is kickstarted to the NYT bestseller list once I release it. I've already started thinking about what to put on the dedication page, I'm leaning toward "This is for the readers, the dreamers, and the adventurers" but I am open to suggestions.
So in short:
>what characteristics did I miss
>where to publish and how (in parts or in full)
>essential tips & tricks
Yeah, nah. You're on your own, bud.

I've read a few of his works (I just recently finished Civilization and its Discontents) and I find it all very enlightening. Psychoanalytics isn't without it's drawbacks, and I certainly can't agree with everything he's written, but I still feel I've changed by just being exposed to his ideas.
Definitely worth a read.

Is getting published a matter of just not caring that you're writing genre trash?
>>8069155
And what exactly was Gaddis right about?
A lot of genre writers have lengthy histories with writers and books of that genre. Is this history necessary? I dunno, but I imagine sucess is only aided by knowing your audience and their likes and their expectations.
I will add as an aside that many grass roots genre writers seem to start out now on Internet forums specifically geared toward that niche. They'll share samples of their work with the other members and get the ball rolling in that way. Once you garner some interest, it costs you nothing to put a book on Amazon and have that established community buy some copies and leave you good reviews.
Why is it that people can never come to a clear consensus on this book? People either say that it's the emperor's new clothes or that it's the greatest thing ever made. Even with other meme-books on /lit/ that people might ironically shit on, these books will still have a clear majority consensus outside of /lit/.
However even outside of 4chan, there isn't really a clear majority response to whether or not this book is shit or is good. Does it have a lot to do with people wanting to like this book even if they dont understand shit about it? On the flip side, does it have to do with people not really being able to get into Pynchon's writing?
>>8068986

Should /lit/ have a book of the week kind of thing so that we can all at least talk about one book instead of constantly comparing the ones we have (pretended to) read?
This is neat, I would opt in to this if anyone wants to try it out.

Do US libarts colleges give good financial aid?
I just took a sample GRE and it was the easiest test ive ever done in my life and im considering applying to some of the meme places in the northeast, not American so it imagine it would be extremely expensive if I didnt have huge aid
Any particular places that would accept a high scoring poorfag as an international applicant? Would obviously have to not be undergrad exclusive
I get ~$2750 a semester at a NY community college.

I don't think financial aid is given to international students at any university in North America.

Jungians of lit, I have a question for you. Is there anywhere in the Jungian literature (his contemporaries included) dealing with the subject of pedophilia, more specifically hebephilia? I have read much of Jung, Marie-Louis Von Franz, and Robert Johnson but I haven't seen this subject dealt with in the least. Perhaps I just haven't read the right books.
I have to deal with this sexual orientation and I am looking for a solution through Jungian analysis if there even is such a thing. It is quite painful and shameful to have to avert my eyes every time I'm in a public place and see a quite underage girl pass by. I look into her eyes and see the possibility of completion but then I have to stab myself in the heart and scream "Stop it you fool!" because I am aware of the consequences for both her and myself. I'm 30 years old and have never and would never act on my feelings and I need to deal with these feelings in a constructive manner because it's quite toxic at this point.

I used to hate the "The movie wasn't as good as the book." people, until I got into reading... Anyone else experience this? I'm a huge movie fan too, but since I really got into reading about 2 years ago I'm definitely one of those people now.
At first I didn't really agree, because what got me back into reading was actually The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It was a really quick read that introduced me to how captivating the simple words in a novel can be. Anyway I saw the movie and thought it was actually a really good representation of the book. Practically a clone actually. So those people must've just been book snob elitists.
Then I read The Martian, saw the film. Book was much better and had much more comedic value. After I read The Shining, and realized it was much better than the film. So I began to realize there's tons of examples to support that statement I once loathed and hated.
The biggest disappointment was the Hulu original show 11.22.63, based on the Stephen King novel. It was such a letdown. I loved that book and envisioned the perfect movie, with say Jonny Depp. I mean it was a good show but wasn't really like the book. I don't know, I was disappointed. I think it would've been better as a 3-part TV show event. Shows butcher novel plots I feel like. Under the Dome was subpar.
I guess the only exception was The Stand. The TV specials were amazing. Anyway, what's your biggest letdown in the novel-to-movie category?
