Hi /lit/,
I've been having trouble on Undernet's #bookz channel after using it for only a day. For some reason my requests aren't being processed or even recognized by the bots. Just wondering if there are any experienced users here who have had this trouble and found a solution.
Also, here's a bit of wisdom from last night's Chinese takeout:
"Age can never hope to win you while your heart is young."

Would I enjoy this book being a fan of mostly fantasy/science fiction? Not much a history buff, even though I am fascinated by assassination's and shit like that. No spoilerinos please.
>would I like this Stephen King book
It seems the answer is yes.
why don't you read the fucking book and find out
>>7686873
It's Stephen King. He admits himself he's the fast-food of literature. You already know what his books are like even if you haven't read them.
Are there any works of the Spanish Golden Age besides Don Quixote worth reading?
>>7686862
Yes.
>>7686862
why yes, Lazarillo De Tormes, El Buscon (maybe), If you speak spanish, then Guzman De Alfarache (i'd be jealous) Cervantes also wrote a collection of short stories known as Novelas Ejemplares. Not spanish, but you may check out Gargantua and Pantagruel, Gil Blas, and maybe, maybe the Decameron.
Also, you might check out Tom Jones, Tristram Shandy, and Tobias Smollett, who translated Don Quixote, and derived quite a lot of inspiration from it in his own works.
What does /lit/ think of this book?
I thought it was very boring for the 1/3 of it but felt comfy enough reading it since the text is easy enough for a reading after a busy day and good before sleep. Then maybe after the middle, shit starts happening, constant punk'd happenings, some quality trolling. Now I'm like 80% and can't wait to read more.
Why is it described as post-modern though?
Also interested. Read the opening chapter near-blind drunk once & wondered about picking it up properly.
Thought the constant switching up of situations was interesting but sometimes it was hard to follow and work out the symbolism. What point was Fowles trying to drive home with the constant changing of reality?
>Why is it described as post-modern though?
because post-modernism=whatever
I quite liked this book back when I first read it, though. The pacing isn't the best, and like you said the first third of the book is boring, yet comfy and readable. Nicholas Urfe is such a well written character you'll drudge through it pleasantly. Combined with Fowles' really enjoyable and flowing prose you'd have to be a turbopleb not to enjoy it. Really, wasn't this the first book he wrote? Not bad at all if so.

Feels bad, bros

why be scared? I'd assume people are only there to help, not laugh at you.

>prof there stops me in the middle of the first sentence because I used the word "diurnal"
>he prances around the room saying, "Look at me! I'm Anon, the most gifted writer ever! I use pretty words like diurnal!"
>tfw the whole class laughs at me and calls me pretentious
>>7678942
What an asshole. My professor didn't ignore pretentiousness, but he expressed that in extremely thorough feedback notes where he put his own taste on the line, not in bullying.
It's true that using Latinate words too much can seem pretentious tho.
Will Japanese literature ever get better than this book?

Its a novel you cockmongler.
Hi /lit/,
Posted this on /his/ too, but I always get the impression that there are far more polyglots here, and that I might get some better advice.
I'm a master's student, painfully making the transition from modern language monolingualism, to being able to read modern scholarship in German and French. Now the French I find marginally easier (because I did some in school, and have good Latin) but with the German I am an absolute beginner, and it is painful.
Now, I've been taking German reading classes, and it isn't going fantastically....

I can't just suddenly 'know' a language. I am doing what I'm supposed to do, but it is taking an inordinate amount of time. At the end of the day, I am a human being.
I figured that the way I have been tackling the problem was the best way to leverage the small amount of French and even smaller amount of German I possess - better I thought than simply ignoring the body of work in those languages until some theoretical point in the future when I can 'read' French and German.

>Christianity robbed us of the harvest of the culture of the ancient world, it later went on to rob us of the harvest of the culture of Islam. The wonderful Moorish cultural world of Spain, more closely related to us at bottom, speaking more directly to our senses and taste, than Greece and Rome, was trampled down (—I do not say by what kind of feet—): why? because it was noble, because it owed its origin to manly instincts,...

>The man of an age of dissolution which mixes the races with one another, who has the inheritance of a diversified descent in his body––that is to say, contrary, and often not contrary, instincts and standards of value, which struggle with one another and are seldom at peace––such a man of late culture and broken lights, will, on an average, be a weak man

Why even bother then? It's one thing to not have unrealistic expectations but that just sounds like you have no motivation to put it out at all.
>>7683751
Not to put it out, but I'm motivated about writing it. I enjoy writing and this story will help me improve as a writer imo. I only fear the plot seems too cliche
