I want to write and to write well. But I'm mostly interested in perfecting my formal writing, i.e. what one would see in an academic or professional setting.
Basically I am trying to get to the point where I can throw a bunch of words on a page quickly and have them convey the intended message without sounding either pompous or unsophisticated. I've checked the archives and most threads concerning improving one's writing are geared toward fiction. Does anyone have any general advice or book recommendations to do with formal writing?

Second: I read your review, and although I didn't really look into the review itself, I have to say that I really detest the writing style. I don't often read movie reviews, but I thought yours literally made me feel labored to continue. I'm not really sure how to fix it, because it might just be the nature of the field, but I just couldn't continue on listening to someone set every scene for me without providing any points that were actually worthwhile.

The real question is, /lit/, how were you in high school?
Were you a dutiful scholar?
Did you go off to college with great grades, seeking to live a lifestyle of your own making?

Getting through because I had to but with great grades due to a good work ethic.
Only at uni to get a good job and make stacks.
I got through because I had to, but then I enjoyed college enough that I'm now a graduate student.
GPAs and awards are whatever. All that stuff is just a leg-up for people that already have the money to go do whatever they want. It helps, but not as much as you'd expect. Undergraduate programs, in any field, don't give a shit about what kind of scholar you are. They just want your money.
If you want to be a scholar but are bummed about not having awards then go do something interesting that you can slap on your resume. Go do a workshop or program or something.
Among my friend group, I left high school with the the lowest grades (in fairness I still did well and we were all ap students) and finished college with the highest, graduating summa cum laude and having won awards for papers I'd written. Don't let it get you down op, you still have time.

I just remembered a scene from my childhood. Me, my mother and my little sister were on a long train trip. It took several days, and we had to sleep in the train. The trip was very uncomfortable, and I didn't like it very much. I specifically remember a certain night, during which I woke up because of the loud noises the train was making. My young self sleepily looked out the window, where it was snowing. I was amazed at how beautiful it was. The snow falling through the nearly pure darkness was almost like from a dream. It was then I realised how amazing life is. The young me couldn't comprehend that such beauty would go unnoticed by anyone but me. There was such beautiful snow falling out here, in a place where no one lived, in a place where no one else would see it. I felt so small and pointless.
I just remembered it, and now I feel nostalgic. I haven't it this strongly in years. Tears are falling from my eyes as I write this pointless text. Because even this text, which is making me cry, is something I will eventually forget. Maybe when I'm older, I'll remember writing this in a time long gone, and i'll feel this once again.
