Depends if you like John Barth.
>>
>>8185841
I do. but I mean, are they overcharging? I've never got a signed book before.
>>
>>8185864
Nah, I wouldn't say so. Buy it and keep it a while after the egghead croaks: by then, it'll probably be worth a good amount of money.

Have you read William Gass? What did you think?

yeah I read the tunnel. just finished it last week. I thought it was good. man knows how to write words. prose was beautiful. the story wasn't the greatest. but I liked it overall. I need in the heart of the heart of the country
>>
>>8185815
Yes, and he is my favorite author. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone interested in experimental fiction and not terribly concerned with plot.

Post ITT books which gave commentary on current social affairs, past or present, or are made to mirror or allude to disastrous events which happened in real life.
I'll start.
>warns about totalitarian governments during a time when western intellectuals were considering communism as a viable alternative to democracy
>details how people can be mentally broken into submission practically becoming puppets
>oceania is obviously a parallel of real life great britain under totalitarian rule

Please stop posting about 1984. It doesn't need an entire thread devoted to it, let alone 3.

>want to read more, spending less time shitposting and YouTubing
>get bored after either reading for a half-hour or even after a few pages and feel like I'm forcing myself to continue which means
>go back to shitposting and YouTubing
>feel guilty for not reading more

This shit happens even with fascinating books. I want to keep reading but I just can't keep an attention span on it for very long, even when I shut off my computer and phone.

Am I just not cut out for books or am I just too addicted to electronics? I don't even fucking enjoy shitposting and YouTubing anymore and want to get away from them but apparently can't. I could be doing so much else with my life.

Can anything be done about this? How does one want to read more? Or is it a case of "if you don't want to, you don't want to, ain't nothing can be done about it"?

The print medium is likely acting as a hindrance to your reading. You aren't used to two things:
1.) Focusing on only one thing for extended periods of time.

2.) Reading in a format that is not the width of a phone or monitor.

Try easing your way into it. Start reading short stories on you phone.

Thankfully, publishers and literary journals have begun to embrace the digital medium. If you find yourself growing restless at even this, or if you simply want to switch things up, listen to recordings of short story writers reading their work.

The New Yorker posts a new story online each week, and they supplement it with a recording of the author reading their work. On the days you don't want to read or don't have the time, download the mp3.

What's the best literary journal online and in print in your country? It's subjective, of course, but take a stand. I'll go first.

Just going to venture a guess, but a lot of /lit/ spends time reading novels and maybe, just maybe some poetry, history, etc. I wish I had time to read literary journals.

Hey /lit/, have you guys played To the Moon? Just played it a few days back.

If yes, then do you know any books that triggers this much emotion as To the Moon does?

I found it a little boring and overwrought. Hated both of the main characters. But I guess it's alright for a game.

So I tried reading Infinite Jest and Gravity's Rainbow, but I didn't like them and couldn't even make it halfway through either.

Is there any hope for me?

One Soldier's War by Arkaday Babcheko is more modern but is a good read.

Highlights to the best of my memory:
>Dedovshchina: the honored Russian conscript tradition of organized beatings, abuse and sexual assault
>Russian commanders as incompetent as the British in WWI
>Author gets tasked with making new bullet proof vests by cutting up used (ie, they had been shot through) ones and sewing them together
>Author would break into abandoned Chechen houses and just hang out pretending he was back at home
>"There aren't any pits in Khankala because there are plenty of journalists here, and they consider it an unacceptable form of torture to keep disobedient soldiers in pits."

Samurai are among the most impressive people who have ever lift. This is a wonderful look into their unique and strong mindset.

I remember reading somewhere that samurais used to rub poop into their open wounds
>>
>>8181974
that's retarded, I've read books where cavemen smear poop on their lances when they go to war so the other cavemen get infected and die.
