What do you guys think of my novel's opening sentence?

>For the past five years, Brandon Cooper had lived in a warzone in which death could appear around any corner, in which patience was not a virtue, in which footsteps meant trouble, silence meant even bigger trouble, and camping, for any reason, was a mortal sin; this is all to say that Brandon was the infamous xChaosWolfx, snack-food devourer and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player to the bitter fucking end.

It feels awkward to me because you're not using parallel structure.

I'd personally revise it to be more like:

>For the past five years, Brandon Cooper had lived in a warzone in which death could appear around any corner, patience was not a virtue, footsteps meant trouble, silence meant even bigger trouble, and camping, for any reason, was a mortal sin; this is to say that Brandon was the infamous xChaosWolfx, snack-food devourer and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player to the bitter fucking end.

So I mumble. A lot.

I am an entrepreneur and winter is here so things are going to be slow until spring when I can resume work and start my next venture.

I want to learn a language in the mean time, and I feel like French would be easier with my mumbling, but German would help with that, but be more difficult to learn. I am monolingual.

What do you think? Pic unrelated.

What route you lookin to go down? I did both Rosetta Stone German and French i gotta say German was a hell of a lot easier. I dunno if it's cause of my Kansas accent or what but my god is Rosetta Stone particular when it comes to speaking French.

Also French is a romantic language, so it's closer in line with Spanish and Latin. English is a west-germanic language, and easier to learn being a native speaker of English.

That being said, learning French kind of sets you up for Spanish, while German sets you up for Dutch or Swedish, consider that. . .

It's a study in sociology by Émile Durkheim. And it's called 'Suicide'.

I'm thinking about writing a novel set about sixty years from now. I do not intend it to be sci-fi or futurist.

Nonetheless, it seems that I won't be able to avoid at least touching upon the technologies of the time period. So how do I do that without turning my book into sci-fi genre fiction or creating fictitious technologies that will appear very silly in a decade or two (not to mention to people living sixty years from now)?

Pic somewhat related.

just vaguely describe them, dont try to give details or in 20 years people will laugh at you 3MB of ram.
>>
>>7360893
Just don't go into technology. Write your story, then set it 60 years in the future.

But really, try not to worry about it looking so silly in the future. Nobody will care if the story is strong enough. Take William Gibson and Neuromancer for example. The tech in that horrendously outdated and that was supposed to be in the future, but it held up because it's setting and story was fairly interesting and relateable.

What are some good books/authors defending the notion of free will?

I wish to change my view on the matter...as Marcus Aurelius said...providence or atoms...I long for providence. But I cannot shake the idea that everything that is, is but a system constantly adjusting towards equilibrium. It makes me think life is without value. It further depresses me to think I think thus because of the aforementioned. That I've lost some roll on happiness, as I feel the need for what is a romantic conception of value as per my understanding of the world. Regardless of how incompatible the two are, belief in both is the sum of life's conditioning. Is there no hope?

Currently I define an individual's will...as what they want to want. Derivative of Schopenhauer...it effectively reconciles my thoughts on the matter...with my thoughts on the matter, my meta-cognitions I mean. But also dooms one to defining themselves on what they're not...

So, /lit/, know you of anything that can offer a preferable view of the world? I don't want to be a flawed automaton.

I don't. But as someone who has read and learned a lot from this book, it's written entirely in the awful translated ideology-speak of the Chinese Communist Party. If you can engage with that and take it relatively seriously, then you'll find this book educational; otherwise, don't bother.
