this album came out closer to WW1 than it did today

Can we have an unpopular opinions thread, with a little bit of substance? Give a reason for your distaste.

I only ever read F. Scott Fitzgerald once, and that was about three quarters of The Beautiful and the Damned. It's as if Fitzgerald is utterly oblivious to the vacuum that was his between-wars generation and he actually thinks we're interested in their dull lives and love-affairs. He's an anti-Hemingway. Whenever someone defends him it is usually the he has a "style", but I just find it obnoxious and bloated, and if he's all style over substance that feeds my opinion. They say I should give The Great Gatsby a shot, but I doubt I ever will.

Added to that, it being a love-story leaves med reserved from the start, and I could see perfectly well where it was going the whole time and hoped it'd turn, but it never did. Now I use it as a coaster for my desk.

try this side of paradise, its a helluva lot of fun. beautiful and damned is generally considered to be a bit of a dud these days

also.. you're missing the point if you think fitz isn't looking on these people. i agree his content becomes boring but not because he's only interested in the petty affairs of the bourgeois but because he is so boring in bis unwavering hatred of them

tender is the night is fucking ACE

It's as if you hate Tchad so you write a flat travel guide about it.

Why are certain genres considered for plebs? Why are most fantasy and scifi typically not considered intellectually stimulating? Or for that matter why are supposedly good examples of literature in those genres (LotR; Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) intellectually stimulating when they don't seem to me to be any moreso than the average work in the genre?

Because fantasy and sci-fi are relatively young genres and classic literature consists of elitist fucks, much like /lit/ itself.
Just read what you like without any care what others think about what you like.
>>
>>8113085
It's not only sci-fi/fantasy, elitism in literature literally kills

>Why are certain genres considered for plebs?
Because the standards of writing are generally much lower in those genres.

>Why are most fantasy and scifi typically not considered intellectually stimulating?
Because a lot of books in the genre ghetto are there because they adhere strictly to the genre's conventions and therefore have nothing new to say. This is much more true for fantasy than sci-fi, though- lots of sci-fi is intellectually stimulating. It's kind of the point of the genre. The writing standards are still a problem, though.

How does /lit/ feel about blind casting? Pic related, the Globe Theatre's 2010 production of Romeo and Juliet.

Personally I think it's fine for most stage productions, since casting choices are limited, but for film production of Shakespeare, especially when it aims to be a well funded period reproduction (as with the Hollow Crown series), I find it very jarring because it pulls me out of the immersion.

I miss the days when all the female roles where played by traps. wtf went wrong?
>>
who gives a shit? do you whinge and whine about the costumes too? or the props?

all you need for good drama is a few good actors/actresses. you don't even really need women to play the women. costumes should tell you how one character relates to another, but they don't really need to be accurate to the period. why should the skin color match? what difference does it make?

the globe theater puts on shakespeare in RP anyway, which should be a much worse barrier to your variety of immersion. Some of the puns and rhymes don't even fucking work. Does that bother you more or less than having a black Romeo?
>>
I just want the record to state that the original thread read "bling casting" before OP deleted it and remade this thread reading "blind casting."

Was Michael Crichton a good author? I personally like his books, but I'm not sure if they can be called "good"

Liked him a lot, was my introduction to science fiction along with Asimov. Had a bunch of great ideas, his prose (as it is sadly the case with many other sf writers) wasn't always up to snuff. Congo and Sphere were pretty well written though.
>>

Sphere was mosdef my favorite from what I've read
>>
His books are fun reads, and his prose is unobtrusive and well tailored to his genre.

What are the best of the best books to learn about any and all mythology and folklore? Abrahamic stuff counts, too.

I want to learn everything for a universe I'm making in my spare time.

Folklore is anything from regular classic folklore to other stuff like Springheeled Jack, 20th century alien stuff, ghost stories (Bloody Mary), conspiracy theories, etc.

Can't you see summer is fucking this place over enough?

I'm curious of perspectives outside of my own so, anxiety thread. Share your experiences.

Reason I ask is because I'm writing about self deprecative insecurity, and the resulting anxiety. Sometimes self consciousness can be crippling to the point that you narcissistically become obsessed with hating and analysing yourself. Typically, my social anxiety doesn't manifest in the midst of conversation (although it can), but rather in an aftermath of contemplation. If you've ever had a drunken stupor of introspection then you know the feeling.

Also any recommendations on books with themes of anxiety would be great.

Two great works on this kind of thing:

The problem is thinking.

It can't, therefore, be solved with thinking.

There are ways to control and stop thinking. You have to find them.

It's called professional help.

Serious question:
How do you guys handle it personally when you receive harsh artistic/aesthetic criticism of your work? I want to put aside any debate about whether a particular work is good or not good. I'm more interested in what you do when you've created something which has strong resonance and is aesthetically poignant for you and someone who's opinion you respect trashes it?
How do we know if it is actually good or not? Is it good enough for it to just satisfy ourselves? If so what's the point in publishing?
I'm keen to just have a discussion about this. Has this happened to you before?
