I'm a huge Gass supporter but i'd have to say Pynchon at his height is better than Gass in his prime. I still rank Gass firmly above Delillo and Mccarthy.

Lovecraft or bust. Full sized novels make it impossible to cultivate suspense. Suspense it of the utmost importance in horror, but it must be cultivated and unbroken.
I always end up writing anything in the worst possible way. It's not so much about using big, obscure or technical terms as it is about never coming to the point. After several edits, I can 'skim' 80% of it and bring down to two lines what I first didn't quite say in a few paragraphs.
I want brevity and clarity as a way of writing. How do I nurture this?

Monsieurs and Patricians of /lit/ what methods do you use to improve your vocabulary?
Apart from looking up a specific word while reading - something that annoys as it breaks flow - I use the website Vocabulary . com.
It's very useful and I usually play around five rounds a day, sometimes more if I'm bored.
It's definitely worked for me as I'm seeing more words I never understood and wouldn't have before I started using the website.
There's an app as well which I got for free but I think it's like a dollar or something...

I always read with a composition book that occasionally doubles as a journal. While reading I transcribe any interesting passages, turns of phrase, or words I don't know, and at the end of the week I look those words up and record their definitions.
