Do you even punctuate?

Hey /lit/, pleb here.

I'm a Writing 101 level writer. I heard you guys were all geniuses, so I figured I'd ask for your advice.

How do I "show, don't tell" /lit/? What are your best examples of a writer doing this well and a writer doing this poorly?

Please help, /lit/. I don't want to be a pleb forever. I know I'll never be genius tier, like you, and I'll certainly never be good enough for discussion here. I just don't want to be pleb. Please?

The door seems stuck but not wanting to set the groceries down I have to shove it a couple times with my hip before it pops open. It's been eight months sense I've been here and instantly it feels good to be home. The job was only supposed to last two weeks but the offer was far too tempting to pass up.

Coding and building are my passions, a couple years ago I build a small submersible ROV to explore the nearby lake and for it I had developed a modulation method to transmit and receive relatively high bandwidth data over sonar, the code was opensourced and I thought it was ignored, ROVing is not a hobby with many followers. Late last winter I got a call from an oil company who wanted to integrate my system on a small fleet of really high end rovers up in Alaska and they wanted some help. I was comfy were I was working from home doing high end freelance jobs, I'm not very good with social interactions so anyhow I figure they have plenty of money and wanted to start the negotiations high and told them I'd do it for 25k, they would have to let me work alone and it would take about two weeks. I was surprised, they didn't even try to negotiate.

I finished in a week and a half but I had gotten to know there rover and it's software better than anyone they had, the thing was built by some aerospace company who did a poor job of integrating all the systems, the operator interface was terrible and there were no subroutines to automate repetitive tasks, no one seemed to even know the api to do that existed. Anyhow I had four days left before my flight out and I was bored so I came up with a little bit of code to control the rov's using a playstation controller just for fun.

Two days later someone fell off the oil rig during a storm and I was able to pilot the rover out to fetch him back, there was an investigation with big fancy lawyers and all and for a while I was afraid they would be peeved for doing unauthorized alterations (was against the contract) but in the end they were impressed and offered to higher me on for the season, at the same rate we had agreed on for the two week job and well I accepted, that's a hell of a lot of money for me. But the quarters were cramped, I didn't like interacting with all the new people so frequently and for so long but most of all I missed my home office/workshop like mad.

Setting my bags down on the table and hear a little servo actuates an empy mist bottle making a quack like noise which draws my attention to the now dead bonzi tree, I had set up a timer on an actuator to mist bottle before I left but the water had long sense ran out, I reach out to feel the needles on the tree and when I touch it quite a few of them fall out. Sighing as glance at the refrigerator and I start rummaging through my grocery bags to find the kitchen gloves and heavy duty garbage bags, this is not going to be fun.

I hear someone run in through the hallway and I realize that I left the door open, I turn to see a stunning young Asian girl grinning ear to ear as she exclaims that I'm finally back. It takes a moment for it to register before I blurt out "Nozi?"

What had started many years ago out of desperation of her parents, my hall mates, to find someone to look after her for a couple hours during an emergency had quickly grown into a friendship with the six year old. The girl was inquisitive and bright and found my little projects fascinating, soon she was hanging around most days after school learning how to solder and the function of various components I had given her some arduino kits and taught her how to do some coding in objective C. While I really have a hard time interacting and forming friendships with most people things were different with us. She had even slept on my couch a couple times towards the end when her parents arguments turned violent. Eventually her parents separated, her mom took her back to Japan and her dad married some fat white bitch with two half Mexican shithead boys and together they have a two year old baby.

"No-zo-mi!" she corrected fanning indigence and placing her arms on her hips.
"Yes Mam" I reply overly crisply and somewhat awkwardly.

Her smile again cracks as she runs and jumps up to give me a big hug with one arm over my shoulder. More of a reflex not to let her fall than a reciprocation of a hug I wrap my arms around her and instantly feel uncomfortable. She whispers in my ear half crying "Oh anon I've missed you so much" and kissed me on the cheek. Blushing and somewhat mechanically I set her down asking how things where in japan with her mother and what brings her back.
>>
She tells with out much emotion that Japan sucked, she could hardly speak the language, all the kids in school made fun of her for not being Japanese enough, her mom started drinking and couldn't keep a job and eventually killed herself about six months ago and moved back in with her dad… "but things will be better now that I'm back with you."

"Oh, I'm sorry" is about all I can reply.

She notices the gloves and garbage bag and offers to help muck out the mess and doesn't even complain, while cleaning with me she asks about my adventure in Alaska, she really focuses in on my picking up the guy with the rover and is convinced that I saved someones life even though I'm sure they would have gotten him, they had called in a helicopter to find him anyhow.

She seemed not to notice how awkward I was and came by daily for the next few weeks, she would do her homework at my table because she cant study in her apartment and would show me her robotic dolls which she built and programmed herself. Each time we met she would greet me with a hug and a kiss on the cheek, which I started returning. We would discuss things like SpaceX's plan to colonize mars or why I didn't own a TV or what my childhood was like or if I had ever had a girlfriend. Once the matter of sex and virginity came up, she asked me if I would like to have sex with her, I stated clearly that that would be illegal and that was the end of that subject.

How can people claim to follow Buddhism as atheists, when all Buddhists worship Buddha as a God, and worship his reincarnation the Dalia Lama?

It's called western pseudo-buddhism. Don't tell me you thought that western buddhists were actual buddhists? It's just a, manipulated, permissive philosophy that they use to justify their ignorance and detachment from any issues in the world
>>
>>7474583
I thought so. Like how the fuck can you be a Buddhist without believing in Buddha as a God, it's like being a Christian who is an atheist. They only do it because it makes them look hip.

I am able to conjure words with meaning but they seldom expand past 400 words. I've been looking at other short stories and they are all past 1,000 words. My problem is not that I am fatigued from prowess but that I am baffled at the expansion. How can one write more when less is appropriate. I seek your guidance now /lit/.

Vacuity binds those who are blinded by sight. To ponder upon how without the thought of how else is to be stubborn towards everything. Stricken by ignorance is nothing more than a dislocation of a severed limb. What’s left of nothing is immeasurable for it is nothing. Even a specter that dwells within a dark cave knows not of the dark cave; to it, the surrounding is just a surrounding, assuming it can gather that much. A cluster of light speckled by a string only to unravel without a spectator is to never unravel. To teeter on a terrain of equilibrium is an astounding act indeed. Those that contemplate expanding a void leave nothing and give nothing. A mind is a vapid sense senses nothing, not even itself.
>>

your words are bad. they are meaningless.

"What’s left of nothing is immeasurable for it is nothing"

nothing, just like your point.

Canadian literature thread:

Topic: Predomination of ethical criticism.

I believe that the moral edict of a novel, though inseperable, is ultimately irrelevant to the value of literature. This is not to say that morality does not serve purpose to literatures true virtues, aesthetics and form.

Instead of developing works of literature that introduce the universal concepts imposed on humanity that derive from the aesthetics, the supplanted ethical tradition reaffirms our cultural and psychological biases by refraining from the juxtaposition of opposing thought-- ecriticism places the cart before the horse.
As such, the Canadian literary tradition has, and continues to, fail in establishing a concrete canon.

Chris Langan already disproved atheism. It's like nonbelievers literally can't read. His CTMU also literally explains consciousness. Can atheists compete with that?

Atheists literally can't explain away their metalogical epistemic and ontological problems without resorting to a heuristic and logically untenable view of the cognitive-theoretical framework of our universe.
Prove me wrong, and no name-calling.

Hamlet was Weird Twitter. He meant it if you agree. If you don't then he was just being ironic xD (not really tho)
>>

He killed his dad and made his sister kill herself.
I think he was sincere, since he didn't know laertes was using a sharpened poisoned sword.
>>
>>7473940

It's reasonable to assume. Hamlet does that a lot. He mentioned earlier to Horatio that he thought he would win the fight because he had been in 'continual practice' since Laertes went to France, so he is at least being dishonest.

Earlier in the play Hamlet says to Ophelia "I humbly thank you." It's hard to sit through because Hamlet is neither humble nor grateful, and he is definitely the sort of person to mock the guy whose father he killed and sister drove to suicide. Absolutely. My favorite character in all of literature.

What are we all reading at this very moment?

This book is pure joy. A nice break from all the depressing books I read.

Have that sitting on my shelf. Picked it up from the "take a book, leave a book" shelf from university. I'm sick of depressing stuff too atm and need a break. Reading the Book of Disquiet and got done with Stoner a few weeks ago. Very depressing books. How does it compare to other Bradbury stuff

Reading The Day of the Locust. It's pretty good so far though I have yet to see why it has garnered so much praise. I just finished reading Miss Lonelyhearts which I liked.

What book is really popular on /lit/, while the average reading enthusiast has probably never heard of it and would quite likely not even appreciate it as much as someone on here would?

The /mu/ song is Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
The /fit/ program is Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe.
So what's the /lit/ book?

"Obscure but still read by non-/lit/ hipsters" level is Infinite Jest by DFW

"Meme tier incomprehensible horseshit no one actually reads" is Finnegans Wake by Joyce, or maybe Lacan's Ecrits

Maybe Ulysses by Joyce? Still ball-breakingly hard and obsessed over by lit scholars but not really read widely. But it's still pretty famous lit so you'll still see overmakuped chubby loud chicks on Booktube channels saying it was their fav of the week.

If you want something more representative of /lit/ though it'd either be IJ or FW. FW because of /lit/'s tendency to deify anything incomprehensible (everyone here wants to read it, or Derrida/Lacan). IJ because everyone here is a hipster.

Any Feyerabend fans around these parts? I never really see philosophy of science addressed here. What do you guys think of Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos?

To be totally honest I find Feyerabend's epistemological anarchism to be the most honest brand of philosophy. I see him as basically continuing a line of thinking from classical skepticism (Pyrrho via Sextus Empiricus), reawakened in Montaigne, on to Hume from which it entered contemporary phil but was lost with Kant and all the Hegelian nonsense that followed.

no no, it's fine, school is worthless anyway. we may as well see how deep it can go.

>school is worthless anyway

Uhhhh, are you trying to say that modern education systems are broken? Because the concept of teaching our youth is not worthless at all, just the modern systems at work
