Can /lit/ recommend any good books on business?

Not your typical cheesy "Get rich quick" or "How to start a business" books. Or books on how to have the correct "Mindset".

I've recently found myself as a very young department head in an office, and I don't have the experience of the other 50 year old heads. I'm looking for an instructional book on how I can avoid the pitfalls, and how I can destroy everyone in my path on my way to the top.

No.

Look at the books your superiors have displayed and inquire about those. You'll likely find someone who can take you under their wing. That's when you can learn their weaknesses and plan your next steps as a usurper

ESL here. Thinking about reading works by William S. Burroughs in English. How hard/complex is it for native speakers? Anything peculiar I need to know before diving in?

Also, I guess, W.S.B. General.

I've read Naked Lunch, the Soft Machine and the Western Lands trilogy (?) in the original language and I'm Italian. Not the easiest thing but you can absolutely do it. I'd suggest reading some other author before him but if you're asking I'm fairly sure you already did, so go right ahead and jump into his works. Take your time, learn through the context, listen to the sound/musicality of the words, if you're stuck don't be afraid to go online and look for help and just have fun. He's a great author in that respect. I'd also suggest you read Hunter Thompson in the original, absolute blast.
>>
I think Interzone, Exterminator!, and The Burroughs File would be easiest.
The Cat Inside and My Education are also fairly straightforward.
Naked Lunch probably wouldn't be too hard.
Red Night trilogy would be about as easy as Naked Lunch.
The Wild Boys would be a touch harder than that.
Nova Trilogy would probably be the most difficult.

In general, his earliest stuff is easy, late stuff is easy, middle is hard.
>>
>>8232395
Yeah, seconding this. Red Night trilogy would probably be his easiest "experimental" text.

Always wondered why his late stuff was put so far down that literature iceberg chart thingie, I mean, it's almost obnoxiously straightforward for his standards.

What purpose does literature serve, and to who?

thats too wide a question anon. it can be useful to the troubled man as a cathartic experience, or to the common man to identify his secret self without the need of actualizing it in antisocial forms, as simple entertainment... or who knows what else.

Thanks, wasn't something I necessarily expected to read but it'll be nice to form an educated opinion on the series, instead of just spouting bullshit based on memes and the average reader. Let's go have a couple beers, on me.

Reading –> knowledge –> making your life better.
>>
1. Reading gives you knowledge. Even fiction will challenge your perspective on the world which is how you grow intellectually and spiritually

2. Reading will enable you to get a perspective on how things were in the past. A well written book encapsulates the time period it was written in and preserves it so we can immerse ourselves in it in the future
3. Reading is free and easy and will make you an all around better person, unless you're reading Schopenhauer

Believe it or not, some people actually like reading. I have fun reading, which makes it a great hobby for me. It obviously isn't for you if you think it's a chore.

The new fascism is, in effect, "anti-imperialist" right now. It is opposed to the big imperialist bourgeoisie (unlike Mussolini and Hitler earlier, who wanted even stronger, bigger Western imperialism), to the transnational corporations and banks, and their world-spanning "multicultural" bourgeois culture. Fascism really wants to bring down the World Bank, WTO and NATO, and even America the Superpower. As in destroy. That is, it is anti-bourgeois but not anti-capitalist. Because it is based on fundamentally pro-capitalist classes.

Fascism, in this slowly accelerating global crisis of transformation, believes in what we might call basic capitalism, o.g. capitalism. It is the would-be champion of local male classes vs. the new transnational classes. Enemy of emigrant Third World labor and the modern supra-imperialist State alike, fascism draws on the old weakening national classes of the lower-middle strata, local capitalists and the layers of declassed men. To the increasing mass of rootless men fallen or ripped out of productive classes – whether it be the peasantry or the salariat – it offers not mere working class jobs but the vision of payback. Of a land for real men, where they and not the bourgeois will be the one's giving orders at gunpoint and living off of others.

Wow it's like this guy totally predicted 4chan and neo-reaction

Except what you're describing; as in the new trend of ethno-nationalism, does not entail the inherent and only grounded coherent aspect of Fascism that is societal mobilisation

What do you mean by social mobilization?

The Prince of Tides

/lit/,

Recently, I made the choice to start following my dreams. That being said, I'd like to give you a chance to read my first Military Sci-fi ebook available for download through my giveaway. At the time I'm posting this, only 3 others have claimed their prizes, and that means there are 47 other copies of my ebook available to claim. So if you're interested, the link will be below.

r8 this excerpt from my novella:

You aren't the only one to grow up on the killing fields. War is a cruel parent, but an effective teacher. Its final lesson is carved deep in my psyche: that this world, and all of its people, are diseased. Free will is a myth. Religion is a joke. We are all pawns of something even greater: memes, the DNA of the soul. They shape our will. They are the culture. They are everything we pass on. Expose someone to anger long enough, they will learn to hate. They become a carrier. Envy, greed, despair: all memes, all passed on. You can't fight nature, Jack. Wind blows, rain falls, and the strong prey upon the weak. Sam tells me you see your weapon as a "tool": something that saves lives, a means of justice. Now, there's a pretty meme! Exquisite! It spared you the burden of all the lives you've taken, absolved you of guilt when you enjoyed it.

Now that I gave it a little thought, it sounds a lot like Hideo Kojima. To paraphrase, OP, you suck taint and anus, no offense. What the fuck is Postmodernism? I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Could anyone give a serious explanation? Also; any books on Postmodernism?

A word.
>>
A bunch of vague hand waving nonsense. Nothing more.
>>
Postmodernism describes both an era and a broad movement that developed in the late-20th century across philosophy, the arts, architecture, and criticism which marked a departure from modernism. While encompassing a broad range of ideas and projects, postmodernism is typically defined by an attitude of skepticism or distrust toward grand narratives, ideologies, and various tenets of Enlightenment rationality, including the existence of objective reality and absolute truth, as well as notions of rationality, human nature, and progress. Instead, it asserts that knowledge and truth are the product of unique systems of social, historical, and political discourse and interpretation, and are therefore contextual and constructed. Accordingly, postmodern thought is broadly characterized by tendencies to epistemological and moral relativism, pluralism, self-referentiality, and irony.

Obviously haven't worked out all the details, very early concept.
Main protagonist (an educated yet kinda isolated, outcasted individual) who has language background and serves as a linguist is contracted by a foreign military to examine and decipher a manuscript or book written in a most Eldritch terrible language, which he has incredible trouble with, and which has driven many a man insane, until one day he seemingly cracks it's secrets, which leads him to a cult trying to summon a Great Old One (a la Cthulhu, Azathoth, Shub-Niggurath) and stops them, but in the end goes insane, but through this insanity and the knowledge gained from encountering the cult, he learns that ANOTHER Eldritch being had purposefully imparted false knowledge upon him so he would find the cult and stop them so this being could be more powerful than the other. This last bit could also be up for interpretation because at this point he's gone completely mad.

Thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated.
