I just finished it myself, /lit/ isn't wrong in saying that Rand isn't the strongest of authors, but by no means is this a bad book. The message she's preaching isn't a bad one, there is some truth in what she says, but I'm also of the opinion that most philosophical views should not be taken at face value.

Notes from the Underground.
the god delusion
Does anybody else here feel burned out?
A year ago I was so enthusiastic and energetic when writing, and could see myself improving. Now I feel so cynical and resigned, so capable of dismissing my previous ambitions. After two years of full-time wagecuckery, I really understand the appeal of living a "normal" life without any real aspirations and so on. Anybody else been in this position before?

>After two years of full-time wagecuckery
>Anybody else been in this position before?
Literally millions of people, but maybe 3 of them browse /lit/. Being burned out is kinda natural nonetheless, most of the aspiring local writers are in this state I'd say 50% of the time
I'm with you op. Having worked a few years now post college at a decent paying job and seeing my friends and peers slowly drift about has started to make me sympathize with the simple, comfortable lifestylethat i have always denigrated. what i cant tell is if "doing time" as it were as a wagecuck has worn my spirit and stunted my ambitions maliciously or if these new feelings are an inevitable product of aging

I realize lot of people in general are in this position, which is why the appeal of an "easy" life makes sense to me now. It just sucks that I'm trading all my energy and enthusiasm and will to live for the sake of a relatively secure existence.
I read that Cormac McCarthy dodged jobs all his life but HOW THE FUCK did he stay alive? Like where did the money come from? Everyday in work I sit there feeling restless and depressed and I picture a young Cormac McCarthy lying sideways on a sofa pinching...

random excerpt:
Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred

Can we talk about the particularly Orthodox themes in Dostoevsky, like existentialism, confession and universal reconciliation? I'm not really sure why the last thread got deleted, I guess because talking about religion in Dostoevsky is bad and we can only talk about him from a secular perspective? Go figure. *shrugs*
One thing I think plays a prominent role in his work is the Orthodox conception of hell. Unlike the Roman Catholic conception, hell is not a state of separation from God, it is actually the same as heaven. God's love is a fire and a light, and...

That's an interesting perspective. I don't see how you can talk about Dostoyevsky without talking about Christianity, it's one of his biggest themes. He's one of my favorite writers by the way
>>7528302
Do you know if Nietzsche read anything by him besides Notes from Underground? Since it instilled in Nietzsche such a respect, I would think if Nietzsche read any of his other works, he would have at least put effort into rebutting them, since they challenge ideas identical to Nietzsche's.
>>7528331
I mean I would assume he had read more of his stuff but I don't know. The nihilism in crime and punishment seems like it could have been an influence on him. It seems like a lot of people who like dostoyevsky conveniently skip over his Christianity. Maybe he was rebutting him, just not directly because he respected Dostoyevsky as a writer

>---===--- General works.
For works pertaining to theism in general, or addressing a wider spectrum of topics.
>Jordan Howard Sobel - Logic and Theism (2009)
This book is a beast. Sobel's (very expensive) doorstopper here is like a cluster bomb upon theology - a kind of upgraded T-1000 version of The Miracle of Theism. In this vast tome, Sobel lays out the complete range of theist arguments, from ontological to cosmological to Pascalian to miracles and the fine tuner. The only criticism I can level against Sobel's work here is that it is not written in a very accessible style and the sometimes mathematical language can turn off a layman reader.
>Graham Oppy - Arguing about Gods (2009)
Continuing in the "cluster bomb" tradition, this recent work is another extremely up-to-date collection and analysis of theist works. Oppy runs the full gamut here and addresses not just classical philosophers, but keeps it modern with the inclusion of the likes of Dembski, Dawkins, and Plantinga.
>Michael Martin - The Impossibility of God (2003)
Martin is one of the most prolific atheist authors of our time. In this anthology, he provides a veritable treasure trove of essays attacking the full range of theist conceptions of God. Martin sets out to prove that not only do the common theist definitions of "God" all contradict each other and even sometimes themselves, but that there is simply no adequate explanation of a theistic God. This is an incredibly strong book; a collection of 32 essays that might contain arguments and concepts you have never even considered before.

>---===--- Advanced works.
Advanced as in addressing certain arguments or certain aspects of philosophy and theology.
>J.L. Schellenberg - Divine Hiddenness and Human Reason (1993)
In this book, Schellenberg advances one principal argument - the argument from nonbelief. He attacks the main theist conception of God as a loving, anthropocentric deity and attempts to defend this argument with a range of analysis. This is a very interesting...

>---===--- For a technical perspective.
These books have less to do with theology and philosophy and more to do with a real-world analysis of religion.
>Karen Armstrong - A History of God (1993)
It always saddens me a little when people don't know about this book. In this carefully-researched tome, Armstrong details the intricate history of the Abrahamic faiths, outlining how the religions evolved over time. Meticulously researched...

Beowulf, The Nibelungenlied, Grettir's Saga, The Poetic Edda. Books I'm going to read this month.
Don't read The Trouble with Being Born. Don't let /lit/ or anyone else tell you it's good or "patrician;" it isn't.
It is horribly depressing, written by a man who is committing suicide slowly by devouring himself psychologically. Cioran is an intelligent man, but that book is a blight on the human mind and soul, if you even believe in that.
It's not for the weak minded, nor for the strong minded. It just isn't for anyone with a mind. Cioran embodies detrimental nihilism -- it will make you want to give yourself brain damage...
