Yes. Yes. No. I definitely felt empathy for perry but I think he was smarter than he let on and I think capote was aware of it as well but bought into it so he could have a sympathetic character for his book. What did you think?

I felt slightly nauseous the whole time reading it. The sections focused on Toerless's thoughts are dizzying and everything else is just a horrible picture of humanity. Plus Basini's misery was just unbearable for me and made me think back on every time I've ever seen someone abused.
Anyone else get really quiet when working on a longer piece, like a novella or novel? Or even shorter ones? I tend to shutdown in terms of being social, like all my words get funneled into my work and I have nothing more to say out loud.

Anyone else struggle with this? It was so laded with so many allusions to psychoanalytic and philosophical concept that it was hard to take everything at face value.
Was the marlin/sea supposed to be the Freudian mother type deal or was it about overcoming the ego entirely which happens in the end. The earliest stages (oral,anal) were apparent in the beginning of the book with the boy was a given but it got a bit complex later on.

Is textual fluidity a fact or a theory? As in, are texts inherently set in stone as definite editions, or are there always going to be multiple versions due to revision and adaptation that means text will constantly be in a state of evolution?

It's not particularly edgy.
I think my thoughts are largely expressed in my first post; not being French or even European, I can't speak to Submission's accuracy, but the triumph of a secularism being followed by ennui and then a cold pragmatism resulting from a life without faith, and that pragmatism then leading to an insincere (or is it sincere? It is hard to tell) conversion to whatever new movement comes along that promises something sacred, makes for a good subject.

I don't want to spoil the book for you, but I'll say this much: there is plenty of chance for edge, and you can even see some edgy revolution stuff in the background for a second, but the foreground is much more muted. How do i get into reading books? I get into the book i'm reading right now "the stand" but end up getting uncomfortable and end up ruining the whole read for myself. What is the most comfortable ergonomic way to read?
