What are /lit/'s thoughts on Atlas Shrugged?
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
But I don't think of it. And the more I read, the less I think.
>>
I liked it, I don't care that most people consider it horrible. And I don't like it because I agree with its philosophy, but because I found it very enjoyable to read. The mystery of "Who is John Galt?" kept me incredibly curious.

I really love the book's sense of sprawl and majesty, when I read it, I really felt like I was reading some all-encompassing work. I dug the fancy chapter names like "The Moratorium on Brains" and "The Sacred and the Profrane".

Some parts of the book left a massive impression on me and IMO are extraordinarily written. I like when Dagny rides the John Galt Line for the first time: the sense of appreciation is incredible. And my favorite chapter is the one where the train gets destroyed, because everyone involved doesn't want to take blame for something going wrong, so they just pass the buck to someone else. That chapter had a really amazing sense of tension and tragedy.

People knock Rand for her prose but honestly I really enjoy how she wrote. Simple but very elegant.

/lit/, does reality (or things in general as we understand them) outside of us really exist? Can we prove something exists if our body or our mind don't perceive said thing? Atheists only here.

Is it autistic to use a typewriter?

It's impractical, but use whatever you want.

It's autistic to care about what people think of your preferred method of writing. If a typewriter works best for you, then use one.

The supposedly best book of the 21st century so far.

Wha does /lit/ think of it? And what books, if any, are more deserving of the title?

I genuinely wish I could physically hurt people who pretend to like this book. Seeing others act like it's intelligent and praiseworthy book when all commonsense and knowledge of literature tells me otherwise drives me fucking nuts. If I could just ignore the posturing pseuds I'd be fine, but they're constantly invading the websites I visit, the comment sections of articles I read and the journals I occasionally browse.

Why are trying so hard to force him? Why are so many people falling for it? I can't think of an author that the American academy has recently tried to prop up who is worse than Diaz. Maybe Coates. Am I taking crazy pills? Are people really this superficial that they read "MIT professor" and automatically assume 'genius'? Are they this blind to the social ideologies and pandering that rule over our culture?

My conclusion is that some of them are aware of the obvious political bias, but they enjoy being pandered to and actively encourage it. Others like OP are probably unaware but still base their opinion off it based on its inclusion in obnoxious listicles like "The Guardian's Sixty-Five Best Books of the Past Fourteen Months According to our Outspoken Literary Critic of Color."

You must know the kind. Some books have so seeped into culture that cursory knowledge of them is required to understand common allusions or historical contexts, without them being worth reading in full:
>To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, Harry Potter, the Catcher in the Rye, Fahrenheit 451, The Great Gatsby, The Count of Monte Cristo, Les Miserables, Neuromancer, Straight and Crooked Thinking, Madame Bovary, Twilight,
>The works of L. Ron Hubbard, Sigmund Freud or Ayn Rand...

What are other popular books one just shouldn't bother with, be it that they are poorly written, outdated, or otherwise plain uninteresting in their own right?

Can a story be bad if it's socially progressive?
26 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Sure.
Just like a story can be bad if it's not socially progressive.
That doesn't denounce the quality of the story.
What the fuck kinda question is this?
>>
>>7720896
But if an author has furthered the presence of minorities in their work (either by being one or having them as characters) is it fair to evaluate their work the same way as anyone else?
>>
>>7720917
If the book is shit then there's a much higher chance nobody will give a fuck about it and it does nothing for no one. Case in point: tumblr fanfiction that makes some character trans or attracted to sea urchins.

What are some arguments for Nihilism? Why would anyone support such a philosophy?

It's sort of like agnostic atheism in the sense that it doesn't assume things exist until there is plausible evidence.

Like how you don't subscribe to the existence of blue swans on the moon until you've got reason to do so.

Hey guys, going through a rough spell. Depressed and not happy with the direction of my life right now, feel like I need to make some drastic changes or I'll either be miserable forever or I'll do something stupid.

Any recommendations for books? Anything that might share a similar feeling to this, or something that might help me improve myself, something that I can just get lost in and forget about the world. Just something.

I'd recommend Siddhartha to anyone feeling the same. It's written in a way which just makes me feel better and more mindful and decluttered just by how simple and clean the text feels.

Well speaking of Hesse, Steppenwolf seems to be where you're at, so read that if you haven't already.
>>
don't you need to make peace with the world, instead of forgetting about it? that's at least the reason why i'm depressed and have been going to the psychiatry.

zorba by kazancakis helped me until it wore off.
you might as well try reading seneca and the stoics, as it is suggesed in moby-dick.
>>
>>7709209
Thank you. Hopefully I'll enjoy it as much as I am Siddhartha.

>>7709224
I don't know what I need to do. I'm almost looking for inspiration through reading but as someone also going through depression you'll understand that sometimes it's hard not to want to just disappear into a different world for a while.

What are the stoics like? I haven't read Moby Dick to understand the reference.

I know of the most important book ever written.

It is a common book, but you would never guess its name or true meaning. Not in a thousand years.
The story has implications which are indirect, but highly obvious once you figure it's meaning.

I feel really good in knowing this information and I don't exactly feel like sharing.
Believe me, this is the most important bit of historic literature you could possibly read.

Convince me to share this information with you plebs.

It just depends on your interests and how much time you're willing to dedicate to a single subject. It is pretty long and repetitive in many places, but only because the author was trying to fully illustrate the similarities between religious beliefs.

If nothing else, the opening chapter is incredibly worth reading.
