I read a couple chapters.
Had to put it down, it was so awfully written.
I am flabbergasted that a single person could enjoy it, let alone have a massive popularity.

I feel as if only smart people really engage genuinely with cultural things (say, literature, art, classical music...), and the ones who are of medium or lower intelligence tend to do it by forcing it upon themselves in order to feel superior. This, in turn, leads to self-hatred because they repress their more primitive impulses.
You basically end up with stuck up, miserable people who's lives are dry since they don't have a natural inclination from their own passions to cultural things. It ends up with idiots who've just memorized a bunch of bullshit without a real purpose behind it.

To this idol he will make any sacrifice, especially human sacrifice. And at the back of the mind, especially of the best men of this sort, there is almost always one of two variants of the same concentrated conception: either "If I had not been to School I should not be the great man I am now," or else "If I had been to school I should be even greater than I am."

You can know about a spook, and thus be freed from it, while still using it for whatever reason you want.
In this case you know the idea of a Western Art Canon is a spook, and judging things through it would be spooky, but you can choose to do so anyways, placing certain works higher than others because they stretch the boundaries of that spook.

Literary value is just a particular flavour of fun that certain people like for various reasons, one of them being that it's a more challenging flavour of fun and another one being that it is a more prestigious form of fun, prestige being something enjoyable in its own right.
It's a certain frame that you can opt into if it makes things more enjoyable for you, elitism can be very rewarding for the ego. If it's something that you consider an obstacle you should simple not buy into it.
