/lit/ my friend can get me a huge discount on practically any book. I want to get Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, etc, philosophy books.
How do I ever know what versions to get, and by what criteria? Take Plato as an example.
The First Philosophers: The Pre-Socratics and the Sophist - Oxford World's Classics
Complete Works - Plato, Hackett Publishing
The Basic Works - Aristotle, Modern Library
Otherwise get Philosophy books from Cambridge Press, Oxford, Hackett, sometimes Penguin
I'm assuming you haven't read Philosophy before? If so pick up Maggee's Story of Philosophy. I wouldn't buy all the Philosophical canon in one go, you have no ideas what your interests will be in future.

Turgenev says that he confessed to him about raping a little girl. Turgenev was a socialist, and Dostoevsky was a conservative Slavophile, so it's possible he was trying to slander him for political purposes. But at the same time, child molestation is a reoccurring subject in Dostoevsky's work, and we're all probably familiar with the infamous chapter in "Demons".
One account of this is mentioned in one of Dostoevsky's biographies. If I recall correctly, so the story goes, there was a poor young girl (I believe younger than 12 or somewhere in that age range) who was being severely abused by her mother or guardian, and he wrote an article on her behalf that led to the girl being taken away from her. Some time afterward, he saw her in the street and picked up her, and well, you can guess the rest. Later, he calls on Turgenev, who I believe was a bitter enemy of his at the time, to come to his house and he confesses all this to him. Turgenev was disgusted, and when Dostoevsky saw the look on his face, he said something like "you cannot possibly despise me as much as I despise you!" From what I remember, the biographer seemed to believe this confession took place but thought Dostoevsky was lying about it because of some weird guilt complex he has, which seems like a stretch to me. I don't know whether or not he actually confessed this to Turgenev, but if he did, I'm inclined to believe he was telling the truth. I mean, who the fuck lies about raping a kid?
Another thing... I recognize this has a lot less credibility, but probably like 6 or 7 years ago, I read a post on reddit from some guy claiming to be in contact with people from Tolstoy's estate and supposedly they had letters or diaries backing up the claim that he had molested children. According to him, Dostoevsky had some weird belief that having sex with children "cleansed" him in some way. I assumed this guy was lying, but the only reason I didn't totally write him off is because when I messaged him for more info, he sent me a link to a translated version of some Russian website where Sofia Kovalevskaya (1st ever female Russian mathematician, who supposedly rejected a marriage proposal by Dostoevsky) claims he talked about doing this at a party. This sounds like a very strange thing to do, but at the time, rape wasn't viewed the same as it is today, and in particular, the rape of someone from a lower social class wouldn't have been viewed as harshly (see the depiction of the rape of the protagonist's mother, a house serf, in "The Adolescent"), so a bunch of aristocrats/bourgeoisie talking about this at a dinner party wouldn't have been that unusual given their value system.
What do you guys think? Have you heard anything about this?

I don't come to /lit/ to get an erection
I can see why Turgenev called him the "Russian De Sade"
I've heard about the Turgenev claim before, though I always assumed it was slander, but does anyone know about the Tolstoy thing?
>According to him, Dostoevsky had some weird belief that having sex with children "cleansed" him in some way.
Jesus Christ, Dostoevsky was a creepy fuck.
I want to read pic related out of morbid curiosity. Will I get anything out of it? Does it have merit as a legitimate how-to business book?

A question that has previously only been aired among Tolkein fanboys has suddenly taken on great importance in a high-profile Turkish court case: was Gollum a "bad" character?
Please dear /lit/izens, provide your best arguments both for and against below. When we've finished, we can even send our conclusions to ol' Erdogan!

>Russian lawyers say Harry Potter character Dobby is based on Putin
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/02/02/weekinreview/putin-dobby-and-the-axis-of-weirdness.html
>In October, Ciftci was fired from the Public Health Institution of Turkey for sharing photos on social media comparing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Gollum. After Erdogan caught wind of the widely shared meme, his lawyers decided to sue the doctor for insulting the president, a crime that could earn him two years in prison in Turkey.
>But they came to an impasse when the judge working the case couldn’t determine if comparing someone to Gollum was actually an insult. Some readers believe that Gollum is more tragic than evil, particularly since others who hold the ring for shorter amounts of time — including the hero of the book, Frodo Baggins — are also obsessed by the ring and willing to go to extremes to keep it.
>“The prosecutor didn’t watch the movie and he defined Gollum as ‘the monster in a bad role,’” said Hicran Danisman, Ciftci’s lawyer. “But we said Gollum can’t be defined as evil. The character itself is a war between good and bad. He is basically seen as a victim of society.”
Hyperreality is here to stay.

Hey /lit/, I just finished watching Inside Out for the first time. It has been over a year since I've cried like that, and it felt good... Now, I have read some great books from this sub, but I desire a good cry. Give me some great books that made you shed more than a few tears.
Perhaps sorrow isn't popular tonight.

Step 1: learn English.
Don't write like that.
Which version of the Bible would you reccomend to a first-time reader? I'd prefer for it to be as close to the original as possible
Then use the Oxford Annotated
Annotations point out ambiguities and explain both narrative context and translation choices

I would read two bibles. Yes, this is kind of a task, but the KJV is 100% essential reading for being part of western culture. Read both KJV(N O T NKJV) and the oxford annotated.
Keep working on that novel! I've read some of it and it's really good! You just have to believe in yourself. You can do it!

Hey /lit/,
I'm a philosophy undergraduate at a well-respected institution that thinks about philosophical issues mainly through an Analytic lens. In the interest of avoiding dogma and enriching my education by engaging with different perspectives, I'm looking to start up a Continental philosophy reading group. I've read some stuff by Heidegger, Derrida and various media theorists myself, but I'm not sure what the level of familiarity will be for the whole group. We're especially interested in perspectives outside of traditional Western metaphysical/linearly-logical/rationalistic modes of thinking. I'd like to dive right in to discourse analysis and deconstruction stuff, but I think it might be productive to work through something a little more foundational first, like Nietzsche or Heidegger, to get in the frame of mind of thinking in modes other than what we're used to. Anyone have any thoughts on potential good places to start or things to eventually read? The basic idea is that the academic institutions that shaped us, the transcendental or Analytic concerns we're inclined to take for granted, and the rational standards we hold concepts and arguments up against all ought to be more thoroughly interrogated.
Many thanks!

there's an exclusively sensual pleasure to reading a book-book that you can't replicate on a screen. the rigidity of the pages, the smell of the decade it was published in, the texture of the covers, etc, etc.
but whether these things matter much is a different topic. they do exist tho.

So /lit/eraries, What's you're favorite Cyberpunk books?
I just started reading Neuromancer again for the 2nd time. I read it when I was back in highschool and loved the hell out of it. As I don't remember much of what happened I figured I return to it.. I gotta say it doesn't hold the same charm. In fact I'd say it's a tad cliche to me.
But that being said, what are your favorite Cyberpunk / Sci fi books, and authors? I recently read to books by Alastair Reynolds, which I wasn't too thrilled with either. I'm starting to loose my faith in good sci fi or cyber punk. What do you guys recommend for a good, solid, fun, but serious Cyberpunk or Scifi novel?
Neuromancer got me into both philosophy of mind and AI theory for the rest of my life, just with that one scene where the flatline laughs the same way twice.
Snow Crash. Published in 1992, it may as well have been written yesterday.
Naked Lunch, really, I'm not trying to be pretentious or obnoxious. I don't think Cyberpunk like Neuromancer could possibly exist without Naked Lunch
