Is the language in a phrase like "I just wanted to get that through your head" derogatory? Does it betray a belief in the recipient as an idiot?

In 10 days, I'll be in Mexico on vacation for a week. I plan to spend my time drinking on the beach and reading. What are some great books to occupy myself with? Something that's entertaining but somehow ties in nicely with that overall feeling of going new places and getting into misadventures.
