So I've recently started working on my first non school related piece of creative writing (a novel). I know a lot of people on this board write, so I was wondering if their is any general advice about making a novel that would be beneficial to hear.
It would help to create a table of contents in the beginning so it's easy to keep hold of the story. If you end up writing a bit and think a different way would be better, change it.

A problem that I had early when I started writing was I was trying to make sure the reader actually got what I wanted to say that I ended up disregarding the story in exchange for the themes and symbolism. I guess my advice would be don't get too focused on what you want the reader to get from your work, just write a good story first and then focus on the themes later.

Don't get too caught up in having a perfect opening sentence/paragraph/chapter to set the "feel" of your work. A good book will do that for itself over its course if you have enough talent, education, and attention to detail. Plus editing.
Hello /lit/. I am a literature retard, being that I haven't really read any books besides one manga named Trigun. What should I start with? I check the wiki but it has books that doesn't interest me.
I think I want to read a book that has simple philosophy, or philosophy that anyone can understand. Fiction is preferably over non-fiction.

Have you ever felt 100% identified with a book? Can you relate to any book in particular?
In my case it would be The Tunnel by Ernesto Sabato. Long story short: I fell in love with this guy some years ago, but I'm sure he doesn't feel the same way about me. He's not gay anyway. We became best bros, then stopped talking, now I can't see a photo of him without wanting to kill myself. I'm thinking about killing him and them an hero.

Currently learning the language to try and read some of my favorite books in their native language--in this case it's French.
At the moment I'm confused by something. What are the general meanings and differences between "n'a pas" and "n'ont pas?" Is one present tense and the other past tense? Is one used to address a singular noun and the other multiple? I keep getting mixed messages and meanings.

Different conjugations. One is for Il or Elle or On, the other for plural ones

There is no female equivalent, we do use "De la" when needed.

Just finished this after previously read Ubik and VALIS, could we have a Philip K Dick thread? This book is probably a better example of how his ideas are often better than his execution, Ubik was much more well crafted when it came to the collapse of the character's realities. VALIS was great as well, but it's a little different so I'm not sure how I can compare that to his larger corpus of writing.
Any suggestions on what I should read next? I've peeked into my copy of A Scanner Darkly the other day, but I'm not sure if I want to read another...

I love PKD and ASD is by far my favourite book by him.
A lot his work does read like a first draft that needs a thorough workover, yeah, but I came to consider it part of the charm I guess.
The recurring themes of God, drugs, and mental health (and lack of same) make his work as a whole more enjoyable and meaningful than the parts individually I think. It all kind of comes together as a lifelong semi-autobiography.
Don't pass over his short stories either, though. As you said yourself he's a lot...

The Torah
I've always found "Lovecraftian" things pretty interesting so I finally decided to try out the source. I ended up reading Pickman's model, The color out of space and The music of Eric Zann.
Did I pick really badly or is his style not even meant to be scary? More about trying to blow your mind than crawl under your skin or jump at you?
I'm pretty confident when it comes to terror. I'd be running out of the room screaming if it was remotely spooky.
I've never found him scary but I think At the Mountains of madness is a very enjoyable novella. It gives you a strange feeling that's hard to describe but very interesting to dwell on.
Lovecraft's game is "fear of the unknown" so if that's not how you get your rocks off, he's probably not for you.
Which is fine. I personally got a lot more enjoyment out of Clive Barker than Lovecraft.
