to read in french, of course. I'm in the middle of L'Étranger but don't know what else is really around that level
>>8223878
Voltaire and victor hugo
>>8223878
If you liked L'Étranger you could go for other novel from Camus. The Plague is especially good imo.
Houellebecq is fun and very easy to read. Marguerite Duras is not overly complex and she is a god-tier writer (Un barrage contre le Pacifique).
>>8224020
Hugo is a bad suggestion, he probably won't understand 1/12 of the words he's reading.
I would recommend Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Jules Verne and Alexandre Dumas.
How do I force myself to stop being a skeptic and to start embracing God and Islam? Why Islam? Because I want community, I want to belong to something, to have people be excited to find out that I'm one of them; I want culture, because I don't have any, because I'm just one of many white Canadians that doesn't have anything to identify to; and most of all I want something that will drive me, to be as righteous as I can, to get a job and start a family, guiding principals to live by. Is it so wrong to force yourself into a religion for these reasons? Is there something else I can do? Some book that can help me?

Follow metrics and rhyme schemes. Learn the basics then deviate.
>>8223652
Let's hypothetically say I don't want to go to in that much detail? Like a free-form poem.
1. Read other people's poetry
2. Stop stealing other people's ideas and words
3. Write
What novel would you adapt for a feature length film production?
j r or the recognitions. except for the recognitions I'd make it set 3 years ago and BTFO hipsters

You don't BTFO things, Anonymous, as that is ungrammatical. You BTFO of them.

It would have to be your pic, but I think it would work better as a cartoon series, instead of a full length movie.
I'd love to see someone do a modern TV mini-series of The Brothers Karamazov. In my opinion, I don't watch a lot of movies so don't take this as an expert opinion, here's who I picture in my head as fitting the roles.
Dmitri: Christian Bale
Ivan: Benedict Cumberbatch
Alyosha: Owen Wilson
Fyodor: David Bradley
Can't really think of anyone for Smerdyakov.

Let me tell you what this book is.
It's tediously bloated, and any remotely worthwhile parts are plagiarized from Dostoevsky, or buckled down by its own self indulgence.
It's for spineless pseuds who can't make their own decisions about life.
It's trash, and so is anyone who praises it.

There's one thing and one thing only that the mods could do to immensely improve the board, instantly, overnight, and that's facilitate more threads about David Foster Wallace. Create them, nurture the ones that exist, guide the discussions, and make sure they stay on track. If we're here to discuss literature, ultimately, we are here to discuss David Foster Wallace. There is no way for a person to grasp the full implications of Infinite Jest and not realize this. We're talking about the smartest man who ever lived. You must realize this. It's not a joke anymore. We're seeing the world degenerate further and further into chaos, and we're standing by and watching it happen. You want to fix this board? You want to fix the world? You want to fix your life? You need only take one step: read Infinite Jest. There is no substitute for hard work, and that's what Wallace requires of you if you are to understand him. If you are to understand not just him, but the world. We're not talking about escapist literature, fan fiction, genre nonsense. We're talking about saving our lives. We're talking about meditating on God. We're talking about communing with the primary presence. This is not an issue to be treated lightly.
Yes, I know you're trash. Plis to kill yourself.

You want gratification? I mean, your life sounds shitty and all but I have news for you. A lot of people's lives are shitty. You're angry at everyone else instead of being focused on how to improve your situation. I'll think of some book rec's but in the mean time, do some meditating or some shit.

No doubt. I had friends that grew up shooting meth and smoking heroine with parents locked up or missing and then others who lived miserable in a comfortable estate worth millions with the love of two parents and siblings. I've seen the highs and the lows and a lot between. I'm trying to remedy my situation,
>You're angry at everyone else instead of being focused on how to improve your situation.
But you have to realize that not every situation has an immediate remedy. It's really only about catharsis. Shitting on /lit/ is cathartic for me right now. I'm sorry.
It took me over two fucking years, but my first novel is done and now fully revised!
I plan to drink this weekend to the point of amnesia and waking up in another country, but after that; I'm gonna need to get this sucker published. I have absolutely no idea which approach is the best. Do I contact an editor first, agent, or just send it to publishing houses?
Also, are any of those service programs that shop your book around for you worth it?

I'm taking a bite, lads:
Well, economists do actually learn something, tryhard. You should think twice before denouncing the importance of economics; The economy, along with the people who keep it functioning, keep the world intact, not politics. And besides seeking a career in economics, many young students of economics are able to pursue other fields, such as finance, accounting-- any business field, really-- journalism, literature, statistics, math, etc. Economists are arguably some of the most powerful people in the world. In fact, Chairwoman Yellen has more influence over the world than, say, President Obama. Economics combines elements of math, statistics, and philosophy to form an established science, hence why it's spelled with a capital 'E'.

Nova Trilogy is god-tier, even if Nova Express is like 60% rehash of the previous two novellas. contain some really fascinating musings on language and systems of control, and provide a pretty compelling justification for his cut-up technique.
