To answer your question though: He's a nameless, talent-less schmuck who has managed to manoeuvre himself into a position where by he can make a living and prosper financially from other, even more moronic schmucks.

Why do plebs compare this to /r9k/? Nowhere in this book is there any rant against women or any griping about not having a girlfriend. Look at /r9k/, see the threads that are up: they're nothing like this book.

The only passing resemblance is in the narrator's distaste of "normies", and the reason he hates them is for something completely different: because he feels they take everything for granted and don't take anything in life as a choice, but as a given.

I think the book is mainly about humans having no free will while they believe they do and basically everything builds up on this believe on free will.

I don't think it's /r9k/ either but that whore got the verbal btfo of a century.

The protagonist's idea of being a badass is brushing shoulders with his boss.

He's a bitch and it's /r9k/ as fuck.

Honestly considering dropping Wolfe forever because of the ridiculous ending. Do the later books in the same universe justify it? Aside from a throwaway passage when Quetzal was introduced there was absolutely no foreshadowing.

What ridiculous ending? What Quetzel is? His nature is set up early, and reinforced often. There is the "owl" attack in the second book, with the writing on the wall four stories up. The obvious bits in his introduction. His zeal at sucking the poison out of that child. And that completely random part where he shows up in the middle of the revolution with a dead person in a shed. And Mucor not being able to see him. Quetzal is half intended as a set up for the sequel, but more its to show how warped the Whorl is, that the pope is literally a demon. The troubles with the Whorl started long ago, but they are compounded by the fact that Quetzel banned sacrificing children. There is irony in this, in that he disallowed it because he wanted more food, but all that extra bodies is what is over heating the Whorl.

Should I be content having died after having lived a meaningless life?
What is meaning?
What is life?
Will I have a concept of contentedness after I have died, or if I suppress that thought for all of my existence, will I never have to confront it and answer?

So how accurate is the GOT PAID BY THE CHAPTER meme that seems to dog Dickens?

Is his work really pointlessly overly long? I was thinking of picking up Oliver Twist.

Regardless they tend to be filled with good substance.

He got paid per installment.

Dickens was probably a hack who lengthened his work, but he's a very talented hack. Oliver Twist is short and accessible and you might enjoy it.

I like the way the Pagan past is conciled with the Christian present. The language is brilliant, the poet coining new words in OE as the need arose. Which translation did you guys read? I suggest reading (aloud) the Dick Ringler translation.

Anyone read picrelated? Or permutation city? I just got through the first two Cixin Liu books. Reading UKL's left hand of darkness now, and enjoying it a ton. Will probably do some Greg Egan next, or something that one of you fine chaps recs.

Also, thoughts on Ted Chiang? I heard mixed things about 'Stories of Your Life and Others'.

Did Twain intend for the reader to sympathize with Satan? I thought so after the ending about life being a dream, and also he fucks with the angry mob. But also he totally disregards human life, sooo hummm.

>>8208040
isn't satan a sympathetic character to begin with? otherwise, how could his influence be so enticing to people? pride and resistance against god and all that jazz
>>
>>8208040
i don't think twain wanted the reader to view satan as an object capable of being anything other than a product of it's nature which is inherently evil. So to some degree I think you could argue that asking if the reader is supposed to sympathize with satan is like asking if they're supposed sympathize with a butter churner that only produces evil butter

by butter churner i mean a butter churn, not one who churns butter; it is the 21st century, keep up b

/lit/, where do I find extremely rare books?

I am searching for a specific book that only had a 5k print run before it was banned in the state of origin. Amazon USA and UK carried the book, but not anymore, although legal there.

Do I contact the censors and request insight for academic purposes? Or universities? Are there sites or organizations specializing in doing the detective work needed to find such a book?

It's not even old. Published in 2001, I think.

>Four storeys of rare books, first editions, maps and prints from the 15th to the 20th centuries.

I'm not an expert on this at all. I just need it for my paper. What would be a major rare book store for contemporaries? Really appreciate it.

I'm looking for a book that speaks in a way that is so maddening that when you put it down you feel a sort of vertigo for reality. I'm not looking for books that try to undermine science or something, I'm just looking for something that will make me feel like my thoughts are spiraling. One that speaks evenly, so that I'm lead into the madness naturally, not confused. Because it's hard to feel like you're going insane when your mind is confused, it works better when you feel lucid, but feel reality sort of crumbling.

If a book like that exists, I want it.

I only felt something slightly similar to what you're describing while reading one particular scene in Infinite Jest (inb4 pleb yeah fuck off). The scene where James Incandenza is young and his father is telling him of how he destroyed his knees because of his father when he was young.

Jesus that chapter was amazing. The book as a whole I don't know but that particular scene was great.
