What does /lit/ think about Conrad?
36 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
A dead white European male was teaching a class on English literature, known tool of imperialist oppression.
“Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship King Leopold II, greatest monarch the world has ever known, even greater than James Monroe!”

At this moment, a black, female, transgendered, cis-hetero-homoflexible Latino transvestite man who has over 20,000 Tweets and 12,000 Tumblr posts stood up and held up an novel.

“What is this book?”

The professor smirked oppressively and smugly replied “Heart of Darkness, by Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad, an intelligent and insightful study of the primitive mind of the African peoples.”

“Wrong. The book is a racist and oppressive piece of propaganda designed to dehumanize the proud peoples of the African continent. Conrad is a bigot. If the book truly had merit as you claimed, Oprah would’ve reviewed it on her show already.”

The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and Iron Cross. He stormed out of the room crying those DWEM crocodile tears.

The students applauded and all registered Marxist that day and accepted Martin Luther King Jr. as their lord and savior. An okapi pounced into the room and stood next to a south-up map centered around Africa. The students joined hand in hand and sang Toto’s Africa several times, and Jesse Jackson, king of all black people, showed up to enact affirmative action across the country.

The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He died of a giant black nigger dick up his ass was tossed into the Sahara desert for all eternity.

That student’s name? Chinua Achebe.

Hakuna Matata.

Maybe start with The Soft Machine?
>>
>>7606260

This, the soft machine is actually quite good as well. Make sure to read naked lunch first though

What did you guys think of this? I thought that it definitely had its good moments but also had a fair share of obnoxious moments.

Also, did anyone understand Church not made with Hands? I admittedly started it, didn't understand shit, and then went on to the next story.

I still laugh about the little part where he screams VICTORY FOR THE FORCES OF DEMOCRATIC FREEDOM whenever he cums. I don't know any reason why, but it makes me laugh every time

some of the free ones online mess up sometimes and it copies the title of the book and page number every page which on my kindle just gets inserted into random sentences.

also. what're you reading right now? just about to start the martian so i can watch the movie when i visit my folks soon.

what is the difference between pyro and ignis in Latin?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I dunno, but pyr- would have properly come from the Greek, so maybe, if they both meant fire, oyr- would have had a slightly foreign, classical sound to them- kinda like the difference in feel between a Latinate vs anglo-saxon root word for us.

Also, I didn't think Latin actually had a word "pyro." They had "pyra", which more properly means funeral pyre or bonfire. So there's that.

OP, you're not being a very cool guy. I'm disappointed. I had hoped that you were as cool as i thought you were. I guess you don't deserve to look up that book i suggested.

Has anyone ever read this? I just picked it up and I have zero expectations.

So. I was just given Macedonio Fernández's The Museum of Eterna's Novel. What the hell am I in for here? Seriously, this thing has like 50 prologues!

Been looking for a long time for an ebook of that. Have your started it?
>>
>>7605251
I have and holy shit. I'm gone through the first 13 prologues (the are like 50,) and its on hell of an experience so far.
It's like Italo Calvino and James Joyce had a baby and that baby grew up to teach Borges how to write his ABCs.

Skip the prologues :^)

Hi /lit/, old /g/ and new /fit/ here.

I've recently done some things I'm not proud of. Without getting into too much detail, I did something really bad to a friend, and I felt so awful about it, I set out to change myself. I did some community service, and exercised a lot, and for the most part I thought I had become a better person. But this weekend I found that I hadn't really learned anything, and that I was still the same. I have real trouble learning from myself, so I decided to try something different and learn from others, through literature.

I'm not much of a reader, but I'm a programmer by professional so my reading skill is very high. I browsed through the wiki, looking for a category about self reflection, transcendentalism, and life, but I couldn't really find anything that screamed 'existentially shattering'.

So if you had to pick, for someone who wants to learn, who wants to change, and who wants to become a better person, friend, and stranger, what book or author would you recommend?

Is that John Green?
>>
>>7602155

For some strange reason, I imagine half the Aristotle episode is going to be about how he hates women, and half the Plato episode about how he hates democracy, and half the Neechee episode about how he's a nazi mysogynist anti social nerd.
>>
>>7602155
OH GOD.

It has begun. John Green is going to dumb down philosophy to the point I'll get an aneurysm and die.
