Is he right? Is the King James Bible the only mainstream translation that isn't awful? Reading his introduction to his Genesis translation, he certainly makes a strong case for it, critiquing both Christian and Jewish translations. He makes out that Biblical prose style (Biblical verse style is quite different) is similar to Cormac McCarthy's prose, and the King James is definitely the closest to that. He also says the King James is much, much more uniform in translation for things like "seed", which is vital to seeing symmetry and allusion in the Bible.

He says the King James also has a lot of errors and a lesser understanding of Hebrew than modern Jewish and Christian translators, but he says it is better because the translators didn't try to "translate context" as much into it, and more importantly because he says they had a better grasp of English.

Here is Alter's compared to the King James

>and she came down to the spring and filled her jug and came back up. And the servant ran toward her and said, "Pray, let me sip a bit of water from your jug." And she said, "Drink, my lord," and she hurried and tipped down her jug on one hand and let him drink. And she let him drink his fill and said, "For your camels, too, I shall draw water until they drink their fill." And she hurried and emptied her jug into the trough, and she ran again to the well to draw water and drew water for all his camels.

This is the same passage from the King James

>and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.

It's the bible, who cares?

Yes, I agree with him. KJV is miles ahead despite its age - which, in itself, is probably a benefit rather than a negative. People recommend the ESV or even the NIV - nonsense. It distorts the Word beyond belief. It adopts all the gender neutral crap to satisfy those who will never read the Bible, and as that comparison shows, is far uglier and literal - not what the Bible is.

Though whether we can really know if it is a very good translation is beyond most apart from academics who dedicate all their time to it.

Typical redditor. This is the foundation of Western literature. Christian or not, you ought to appreciate it. If not, get off this board.

The King James Version was written for the common people of the time. The translators only used a limited vocabulary so it would be understood. It isn't the most technically accurate text, but it is the best sounding.

What are some books you started reading but never finished?
for me it is the bible, dune, the karamazov brother and the one I'm reading now (does that count?)

Most of the famous ones should suit you well. Dostoevsky is much more about ideas than his language, so a lot of what he's about survives translation.

I have an issue with fiction. I was taught in school to not think of the protagonist as the author. However, it seems that in most works of fiction, the work is highly autobiographical.

How does one read fiction, knowing that the author is clearly writing about themselves, yet not picture the author in the story?

I wrote some Sci Fi genre fiction. Honestly, I consider it about a 5/10 on a scale from what I've seen published to what I've read.

How do I go about selling/publishing/turning my reasonably decent Sci Fi into dollars to feed my ravenous school loans?

Does anyone here write scripts?

I've tried using FinalDraft and it's great, but pirated versions don't work after a couple of uses.

So what other screenwriting softwares does /lit/ use?

Thanks in advance.

Be more specific, because I could give you a whole lot of recommendations based on this criteria alone.

Well since you're French, you might start out with The Stranger in seeking happiness.

Though these are mostly philosophical and will have less to do with practicality.

Is it acceptable to listen to music while reading?

Why wouldn't it be? Reading to music is a good way to keep from being distracted. Especially when everyone in your house like to talk obnoxiously loud.

sweet taste breh

I don't usually listen to music when I read unless it's an album that kinda fits the mood of what I'm reading. like for example I listened to either/or by elliott smith when I read the catcher in the rye and it kinda helped me get into the world of the novel

I listen to a continuous loop of city rain.

Have any of you anons ever had any luck getting published in literary magazines? I have three short stories of varying lengths (8000, 3000, and about 1000 words) that I am looking to publish, but am worried that some slight mistake will prevent me from being taken seriously. I know that many magazines don't even bother giving unpublished writers a sideways glance, and it generally takes a long time before a rejection is made known, so I want to do everything I can to make sure I am taken seriously.

My questions are as follows:
How important is it that I read the magazine before sending in my story?
Is submitting to multiple magazines simultaneously a good idea, or would I do better to submit to more prestigious publications first and be patient?
Are footnotes generally acceptable? Does it vary by magazine or should I make efforts to remove them from my story?
How important is a cover letter for an unpublished writer? If it is important, how can I make mine stand out?

Getting published thread, I guess.

>Have any of you anons ever had any luck getting published in literary magazines?

No one here is an actual writer.

>but am worried that some slight mistake will prevent me from being taken seriously.

You will never be a writer with this attitude.

>I know that many magazines don't even bother giving unpublished writers a sideways glance

They don't.

>How important is it that I read the magazine before sending in my story?

Zero. And any magazine that believes that is fucking retarded or just trying to get more people to buy their shitty magazine.

>Is submitting to multiple magazines simultaneously a good idea, or would I do better to submit to more prestigious publications first and be patient?

Submit to anyone and everyone all at the same time and fuck anyone that tells you otherwise. But again, if you're unpublished, the most prestigious publications are literally going to toss your shit in the trash. They have national and internationally known writers to publish instead. Submit to them, but know it's never going to happen until you have a history/resume of being published. It's like any other job. You have to work your way up.

>Are footnotes generally acceptable? Does it vary by magazine or should I make efforts to remove them from my story?

Ew. No. Get rid of them. They're only a meme because of DFW.

>How important is a cover letter for an unpublished writer? If it is important, how can I make mine stand out?

It's important but not important. Don't try to stand out. You'll look like a fucking hack and be thrown in the trash. Even the meme master DFW was almost tossed in the trash because the editor said he had the most arrogant cover letter he'd ever seen. No flowery prose. Don't tell them your mom thinks you're the greatest writer ever. Just state your business. Keep it simple, stupid. If they like the story, they'll publish it.

I'll add an addendum to this. Don't submit your lit fiction about - a hipster faggot who sits in a coffee shop all day and dreams about his perfect pixie dream girl who goes to the library with him for the rest of his life - into a Sci-Fi zine. Conversely, don't submit your epic space opera or magic middle age elvish fantasy with its own language, to some place that publishes brooding lit fic. Do like, bare bones research before you submit, but you don't have to read the whole thing. Most of them will tell you exactly what they're looking for.

Was he correct /lit/?

In my opinion, yes. The majority of (unintelligent) people are able to protect themselves against the harshness of life by endorsing a series of beliefs that are clearly irrational, but serve their purpose by keeping the person optimistic and hopeful. Intelligent people are determined to see the truth, and therefore their realism makes them depressed.

It is somewhat true. I think the reason should be more simple: intelligent people set higher standards on themselves than other people.

The reciprocal is rarely true.
>>
>Was he correct /lit/?

no
>>
IMO yes, intelligent people question their habits and society's very often, dumb people just flow with what everyone says to be good and enjoy the silly things everyday
