reddit: the novel

never read it in high school, tried to pick it up in college but by then it was too late to ignore the obvious flaws. seems like a really good book to get people into literature though. actually, in my experience it's more like "read this one book then claim to enjoy literature", but whatever, better than nothing I guess.

Vonnegut was a meme author, and had no discernible talent. He was shitposting, and is literally genre tier fiction. clearly a juvenile author.

Has anyone read this, it is often cited as a foundational work to feminist theory.

I may read it for insight into the movement and its ideas/grievances. One must humor the gender argument as part of solidifying their political ideas.

Thought and opinions requested.

She fails to argue that Lesbianism is not Freudian/Lacanian.

Not that it is necessarily but her arguments are weak.

Otherwise it's overly-reliant on Sartre's bogus philosophy (literally a DUDE FREEDOM LMAO interpretation of Heidegger - very bad, but even Beauvoir decided to defend him after Heidegger wrecked his shit).

She has some interesting things to say of literature but it's mostly a tract that she wrote but didn't believe in because she lived the complete opposite.

Just read about her accusations of rape.

Is that to say she argues that free will exists and men use it to knowingly oppress women in some capacity?

Philosophy noob here. Thoughts on Camus?

The first philosophy book I've read is the Myth of Sisyphus. It was comforting in some parts, and really incomprehensible in others.

How does this compare to his other stuff, or to the works of other existentialists, or to other schools of thought?

>his other stuff
is usually better than Myth.
>the works of other existentialists
better than those.
>the works of other existentialists
top kek, you can't really expect anyone to do a comparative study of existentialism vs 80 other schools.

But on that matter: exis had a lot of appeal because it fit the post-WWII atheist zeitgeist a huge lot. It's also accessible philosophy and it was the #1 school for that part of the XX century mostly because of these two reasons.
>>
>>7693725
my copypaste fucked up, third meme arrow was obv meant to be 'other schools'.

cool. do you have any recommendations for classic work that you think fits today's zeitgeist?

Start with short stories. 'The Overcoat' and 'The Nose' are essential, Gogol or otherwise. Then Dead Souls.

Pleb. His short stories is where his true mastery is shown. Genre and thematically the most diverse author I know of.
You go throughout a massive range of emotions and impressions through the collection. You will read something akin to Borges, something comfy and then depressive, than tragic, sad, joyful.

Am I the only one who feels down when I see people are trying hard to better themselves? Mostly when they read great books, but also watch great films and study hard.

I mean, I make a decent effort to become an intellectual and I don't like seeing people "catching up" to me. It's like I want everyone to be a pleb while I take advantage of life with my patrician ways.

Why am I such a piece of shit? Does anyone feel the same?

It's good to see that this perspective isn't good. It puts a barrier between you and others, and it's harmful to you.
I encourage you to work on seeing what's good in others bettering themselves. Their strengths can become your strengths. Also work on empathy.

I became an avid reader like fifteen months ago and I can't stop. I stopped watching tv and I don't spend much time spamming my message on 4chan anymore.

Here's how I did it.

-Remember the average person reads like zero books a year. If you read 5 pages a day, you are 5 pages above the average person

-Don't force yourself to read. Commit to read 5 pages a day. I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure

-Read various books at the same time. When I grab a difficult book or one that makes me sleepy I grab another and switch. This should refresh your head. Keep them thematically different. I read economics and fiction.

-It isn't a race. Reading slowly won't make you sleepy that fast. Try to acknowledge what books are for you to read fast and which aren't.

-Buy the physical copies. When you get the books from your own money you'll feel the need to read them to avoid the feel of wasting your money.

-Start with books highly discussed here so you feel motivated to discuss.

he was such a meme author that the memes themselves came to life and enveloped him.
>>
All he wanted was a coffee. Just one coffee.
>>
>>7693469
So do we just call everybody who maintains an integrity of ideology throughout most of their career "meme authors" now?

Have you read it, /lit/? I just finished reading it and all I can say is that I'm disappointed. Amis has the most geometrical prose I have ever encountered. Reading him is such a chore at some points, and the satire of pretentiousness in academia (one of the main themes of the book) is so glaringly obvious that it's hard to even have a giggle while reading this book.

Why are campus novels almost always 'satire', and why do they all suck?

>>
>>7693450
i went in hearing that it was clever and funny, but i went away from it disappointed, i didn't feel the need to finish it, really. it felt rather sterile. Have you tried reading any Saki?
>>
>>7693450
Never even heard of it, actually. And campus novels need to have some sort of angle to not be pointless. Satire is the easiest angle. Though it is a shitty setting in general, yeah.
>>
>>7693450

yeah, they blow, authors are basically people whose lives are organized around campus aspirations. nowhere else considers their life's work worthwhile, whereas among sterile academics they're gods. can't make fun of what validates your existence and it's painful to watch them fake it.

I've been thinking about Nietzsche's negative view on his own predisposition towards pity. I was wondering if there is any literature about people who are too nice or emotional for their own good.

I forgot about that. I'll have to read it again. I may get another translation though as I purchased it before I realised how bad Wordsworth Classics are, I could tell that it was a poor translation from reading it.

If you are upstanding, call the library and tell them you lost the books, see how they want to proceed.

If you are a scoundrel, open another library account.

I think this is the most related board to the subject.

What resources, like websites, books, charts etc. would you recommend for learning IPA?

I guess there are some books devoted to it. Which are they? Is it worth reading them?

Suggest what you deem helpful.
