Just finished Trial by Kafka. Can't figure out what to think of it. Share your opinions please.

I read it two days ago. I definitely liked it however I'd honestly only give it 8/10. Something about the work just makes me feel claustrophobic particularly with the copious descriptions of the court and offices.
Is there any translation aside from the muir which is good?
I loved the 'ending' and the dog scene though.
An all time favorite. You will enjoy it much more on your second read.
I think the opening line: Someone must have slandered Josef K (...)
lays it all on the table for you. While I think it's best to avoid rigid allegory when talking about Kafka I think there is definitely an element of equality between K. and the courts in this book, whether that's to mean the courts are tipped off by his peers, run by his equals, or only in the sense that even the highest member of the highest order of high court is still a man - perhaps a dog - like K.

I read czech translation which seemed to be good. I especially liked very long sentences.

I've never listened to it, but the summary on RationalWiki (a mostly atheist website) makes it sound like Hitchens loses.

He sounds like a child trying to disagree with everything his mom says. Here's how it ends.

Alright you faggots, I'm starting Infinite Jest. Is it suggested to get one of those reader's guides too? They seemed unnecessary and kind of pricy.
I don't think a reader's guide is worth it. Realistically its a fairly simple book. Just requires multiple reads.
Totally unnecessary, like yeah there's a few cool Borges references here or there but it's not complicated prose (for the most part, certain segments on math or in vernacular can be a little tough but nothing that would ruin a first-read through). Guides pretty much just feed you trivial information which is only cool to know if it becomes your favorite book or something.
It's the most clearly written book you'll ever read besides The Stranger. You just have to get past the early-ish ebonics chapters. It's just long. There are no tricks to it.

What is /lit/'s opinion on this book? I'm probably about to read it all the way through.
A little background about myself. I was born and raised a southern Baptist and up until when I was about 15 I was a very very strict Christian. Not the mean type but the "nice guy" Christian. Around when I was 15 I started to question my own beliefs. I soon came to the conclusion that I was an agnostic thiest. I floated through life until now where I want to find a purpose. So here I am going to read it for myself as an adult instead of a child to judge it myself....

For the Qur'an, Sayyid Hossein Nasr recently released a Study Qur'an that's supposedly very good and will be used as a standard by Western academics. Basically intro stuff from what I've read about it. No Arabic is within it but it's better to listen to the Arabic than attempt to read it or its transliteration if you don't know Arabic.
