What's cringe about that?

Atheism is inherently cringe.

He's just recommending books by his pop author friends.
Do you think there are books that aren't worth reading after a certain age?
For example, I'm 24 and I only got into reading books """seriously""" like 2 years ago. I've read Infinite Jest, Ulysses, 2666 and The Recognitions to name some, but I've never read any of this stuff:
>Of Mice and Men
>Lolita
>1984
>One Hundred Years of Solitude
>War and PeaceComment too long. Click here to view the full text.

OP, are you me? I've read some of the books you've listed, but have read more postmodern literature as well and struggle with the same feeling.
I think what is best is to appreciate the evolution of literature and remember that any given book (especially the ones you listed) are representative of a particular style or school of thought at a certain point in time. Also, just because you might prefer postmodernism, does not necessarily mean that another piece of literature is not good and that you...

>>The Catcher in the Rye
I never read that book even though I probably should've because it's a classic, I know it would be pointless to read it now though, because I outgrew it and I don't feel like I'd have anything to learn from it anymore because I'm too fucking old, plus we all already know the story. Yes, I think I'm too mature for it and don't want to read a book about some angsty edgelord from the 50s.
>>8091255
the way i see it you can keep coming back to the book as you get older and take away something new
1. "i identify with holden" -- edgy teenager
2. "i reject holden and those who identify with him" -- edgy young adult
3. "i have compassion for holden and empathize with the people who take care of him" -- not-so-edgy older adult
god knows what i will think of the book if i read it again at 40 or 80 or some shit, my reaction will probably be "i can't imagine...

Suggest books about cognitive biases; preferably in a list like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases but more in depth.
Big Book of Biases by L.L. Cool J
This picture is really awkward.
Could cognitive biases dethrone informal fallacies as the king of shitty memes?
is he the most unlikable, pyschopathic character in literary history, or is he just a common, everyday /fa/ggot?
That honor goes to either Mason Verger or Ramsay Snow.

I refuse to believe someone posted this unironically

>is he the most unlikable, pyschopathic character in literary history
are you the most 12, underage character in 4chan/lit/ history?
How did you crack this one, /lit/? Did the Skeleton Key help at all? Any other readers' guides?
I'm about to read this. But only after I found out that it's framed around / based on Vico's New Science. Read Vico way back. Thought it was cool joyce was into it.
See ya 'round m8.

Joyce was into pretty much everything, jsut saying.
>>8091120
don't get that editon if you're still looking to buy.
No one actually reads this for fun, right? I read the first page and I literally felt like I wanted to fall asleep right there on the spot. I'm not even being hyperbolic, that's literally how I felt.

>having fun whilst knowing you shall never satiate the Will as long as you desire fun
Why someone want to read this trash?
>>8090558
idk, you'd have to know it's trash first in order to not want to read it.
I'm currently reading this. What did you think of it? Did you like it? Do you prefer modern literature or something older?
There's this little dilemma for me. I've learned English as second language and Dracula is really difficult to read. There are tons of old words (I'm pretty sure there must be noun for words that are no longer used because new words have replaced those old words), thus I sometimes find it hard to understand some sentenced. And I don't know which words should I remember to use in my daily vocabulary.
>>8090321
I love the journal/diaryentry format. Any spooky supernatural story should be written like that.
Actually better than Lovecrafts first hand account rehash because you know that author survives to the end. But the journal entries could have been collected at a later date, and so you don't know who can die and live.
>>8090321
>there must be noun for words that are no longer used because new words have replaced those old words
archaism
>>8090321
A lot of archaic words are used, yes. But you don't need to use them in daily use. It would make you sound pretentious.
>spend hours working on four pages of writing
>read it over once done
>it's all shit
>take a deep breath and start editing, reminding myself that all first drafts are shit
>take hours to edit carefully
>re-read what I have now
>it's still shit
It keeps happening
>>8088579
>>8088579
Post it.
Maybe its not as bad as you think.
>>8088579
don't edit a first draft as you go. The 4 page edits are infuriating because you are evaluating in a vacuum with no larger text/story to base your edits on.
How long does it take you to read a book, anon?
About a month
>>8087611
Can you give an example of a book? I'm interested in the number of words. I'd also like to know what your reading sessions are like.
About a year.
Why is cyberpunk so boring and biopunk so interesting? Biopunk can have a do-over of a whole shitty zombie genre and make it good.

Who's side does /lit/ take ?
In a choice between the two, Bakunin.

Oedipus Coloneus

Why? Just let the voting last until we finish the current book, giving everyone time enough to vote, and then we'll just continue with the book that's been selected. I agree on the rest thou
I give it 24 hours before this whimsical idea dies a cursed death.
The man—or in some cases, child—who is impaired either physically, mentally, or both, has the luxury of lowered standards in whatever he endeavors to achieve. The ears of his audience become deaf to flat notes while the eyes of his parents become blind to crooked lines and warped symmetry. Nets don’t hang as high and are left wide open. The outcome of what the impaired manages to accomplish is an afterthought—mere appearance of exertion is considered sufficient, even praiseworthy.
Our expectations of such people are not diminished to protect them, but to guard...

Cioran

I especially like copying the way the translator uses dashes. I find that for the fiction I write, it's a bit too much, but for lyrical ranting like Cioran it gives a nice cadence to all the caveats.
How old were you when you found out that contradictions are not to be solved but are simple reminders that the mind gives us practical models to live life here and now and not objective timeless descriptions of 'the world'?

I was 16 when i found out that the world in all its sheer complexities does not succumb to any kind of dogma, generalization or fundamentalism but requires an open, pragmatic and unbiased approach in every singe case.
