And these reason I bring up the movie at all is because it frames the question in a plausible way, I know scholars argue over the intentions of crazy artists like Henry Darger, about the supposed gender/queer implications of his fantasy girls have dicks etc. and I'm sure they argue about other crazy artists

On the off chance you actually care about the subject matter, all you're going to find here is a lot of goalpost-shifting between art having value as a medium of expression and art having value only to the audience.
Going to be reading some eastern classics. Should I bother with an abridged Mahabharata if I'm going to read the Bhagavad Gita (Easwaran translation)? And what's a good translation of the Ramayana? I looked through the archive and the Narayana one was most mentioned.
Also, for Buddhism, should I read the Dhammapada as well as Bodhi's In the Buddha's Words anthology, or is the former adequate on its own?
Bhagavad Gita is definitely the most applied of all the sections of the Mahabharata, and it could be argued that it is the most significant portion. However, I think you'll benefit greatly from reading an abridged version of the Mahabharata as well as a full version of the Bhagavad Gita because it gives you more "historical" context. It's similar to how reading the Old Testament provides a foundation for the New Testament to deliver its message

I'd recommend both. The Dhammapada is a fairly short read as far as Buddhist texts go, and Bhikkhu Bodhi's anthology is pretty much the best introduction to Theravada Buddhism out there.

What do the wonderful minds of /lit/ make of the postmodern structure in Bolaño's "2666"? Any interesting insights on the novel? I'd love to hear some feedback; I really enjoyed the novel. Furthermore, is Bolaño's "The Savage Detectives" worth the read. I've also heard good things about Julio Cortázar's "Hopscotch" (Rayuela). Has anyone read, can critique, or recommend this novel? Do you agree? I'm shy and awkward enough that an interaction with basically anyone is something to be endured rather than appreciated. But I do think being well read can heighten boredom with the less contemplative

I agree and disagree. Reading also makes you smarter and quite frankly if you're that shy then reading can only help you. If you read the right books that is(good books).
I've found that reading has increased my capacity for empathy and made me more appreciative of humanity in general.
