Truly plebian.
Any decent writers or thinkers who work almost exclusively on the internet. The only two important ones I can think of are Eliezer Yudkowsky and Piero Scaruffi, and I'd hate to think they are the best the web has to offer.
Reddit wasn't any help, does /lit/ know of anyone worth reading?
>yudkowsky and scaruffi
>decent

Half decent I suppose. As in they're one of the few people on the internet who don't regurgitate others ideas.
You know of anyone better? I'd love to hear of better examples.
>>7564384
I've thought about it. A lot, actually. I just don't see it as viable, yet, and I don't have the savings and job security to take the leap.
did this guy do anything other than bitch about boring upper middle class folk
Talking trash about David Foster Wallace should get you fucking banned.

You can either be a happy believer, or you can be a happy nonbeliever. You cannot be happy if you are in between.
Most people are taught from birth that everything matters for some inexplainable reason. For some people this is religion, and for some people it is an abstract concept that is never explored.
If your whole life is built around everything mattering because it simply does, the idea that it doesn't is terrifying. When someone starts to lose the belief, this usually causes them a lot of distress. A midlife crisis may happen. Depression may happen.

Aristotle was a believer, while Plato was not, I think.

Perhaps the mgs graphic novel, if that counts.
Hey /lit/,
I have £50 to spend on books - I was thinking of getting the Penguin Little Black Classics, is it worth it? I want to get the best value for money, bang for my buck and bounce for my ounce.
If not what else should I get? I know I could nip into the local second hand bookshop and buy piles of books for £50 but they won't have a great range on offer.
A lot of books on Amazon are in the £2-£4 range with delivery so you can still get quite a lot. Plus I'm pretty sure most of those classics are short stories.
LITTLE
Spend the £50 on something else and pirate the books instead
Is Robinson Crusoé by Daniel Defoe good? I was having ae look at my old books and I found an adaptation of it that my school made me read for a test (6th grade I guess?) and I really liked it. Should I read it?
Guliver Travels is better
It's pretty literary m8
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_Crusoe#Interpretations
Also check out Hayy ibn Yaqzan
Yeah, it's pretty good. I've actually read it ("read" it, if you wish) three times without reaching the end. As soon as he gets off the island, I lose interest, every time. Another good Defoe: Colonel Jack, perhaps better than RC.
>the gods ought to come to me, not I to them
what did he mean by this?
>>7562669
That the onus is on bullshit to prove itself instead having me finding ways to delude myself that bullshit is real. Or that he has a limp and doesn't want to go anywhere.
Context:
> Both Amelius and Porphyry were very much taken with religious movements, ritual, and oracles of all sorts. Plotinus did not share these interests: Amelius became keen on sacrificial rites and went out doing the rounds of the temples at the New Moon and the religious feasts. He once wanted to take Plotinus with him, but Plotinus said, ‘they [the gods] should come to me, not I to them’. We were not able to understand what he might have meant with such grand words and we did not dare to ask him. (Life, 10. 33–8)

Hey /lit/.
I want to start reading thomas pynchon because i heard nothing but good about him, but I don't know where to start. Can you guys give me a guide?

Lot 49 then V. then GR
Some ppl will say it doesn't matter but that's a meta joke. 49 & V. are relatively quick and will get you in gear for GR—or turn you back. Not everyone is going to like Pinecone.
Sure is Reddit in here.

What are your interpretations of this book?, ideas about how it's all put together, who wrote what, opinions on the poem inside, notes and references you think you've figured out and links to a quality analysis of the book and poem are all very welcome. I am already aware of Brian Boyd's analysis so leave that out. Thank You.
Suck my balls.
>>7562371
why?
can you give a tldr of Boyds analysis for those of us who don't know it?
Are there any good websites that catalog professional reviews of literary works? The best/only one I know of is the Complete Review (www.complete-review.com/maindex/maindex.html), but while their selection of fiction is very good if incomprehensive, their poetry section is lacking horribly (http://www.complete-review.com/maindex/poetry.htm). Are there any other options? Not interested in sites that focus on pop/genre lit, ofc.
>>7562181
Goodreads.
>>7562181
Also I'm pretty sure CR only includes things that people who write for the site have read.
>>7562186
That's the IMDB of books. I want the Rotten Tomatoes/Metacritic
Is librarian literally dumbest and most useless job ever? I could easily find a book in library, every idiot could do that, only use these lazy useless rats are "muh mr has a debt! Please give us books for this one old book you returned anyway???". Fucking hags, roastie whores, and if more older and uglier librarian is, she is more likely to be bitch and spew her insecurities over me. I fucking hate them
This is b8 made for getting people bitch and moan about the overlap between /lit/ and /r9k/
I'm genuinely curious if "library science" is as absurd as it seems or if there are actually some worthwhile concepts there.
Though it sounds like you got BTFO because you couldn't keep track of what you borrowed tbvh.
Memes and /pol/ aside, is this worth the read?
Not really
complete trash
nothing even slightly redeeming about it
>>7562152
Yes, it is.
Any good?
I didn't know the first volume of Hitler's famous book was called Karl Ove Knausgaard. That's interesting, OP.
>>7562024
Nice meme answer.
Really good. At least, the first two are. Haven't read the rest yet.
