What are your favorite ARPGs?
I played all the Zelda and wanna try more classic ones. My favorite Zelda is LA though so I've been curious about the first "Mana" game which got renamed Final Fantasy adventure, because I like the GB aesthetics, but it also has a GBA remake, and I've been wondering which one is better, what's the consensus from fans of the games?
Also been looking into the Ys series, which is the best to start with? It seems the fan consensus is that 3 is the best, but it also had a PSP/PC remake, so same question: which version...

It's a shame whenever people get into series beacuse of remakes or reboots. Everytime I see people talk about Ys it's always the newer ones. Imo always start with the originals. You should try Ys 1 or Ys 3, both give you a good take on Ys.
Zelda is not an action-RPG, except LoZ 2.

Anyone played it yet?
The bonus content makes me want to give it a tryespecially the whole reviving Nei thing, but the art style is holding me back (pic unrelated, since it's by a different artist).
What you spoilered there is actually concerning to me as the unusually grim time of ps2 was a real part of its greatness to me. The theme of futility it holds is so unusual in any game let some a jrpg.
Whenever I play PS I am blown away by how far ahead it was of other jrpgs at the time.
I finished it today, but in Japanese.
I got through most of the game without a guide so I completely missed the whole revival thing.
Finding the damn crevasse and the Ney Weapon quest however drained me so much that I just grinded for manufactured equipment and used a map instead of accurately mapping all those damn holes.

From what I understand, you have to beat the game first before it will let you go back and revive her. And it only adds a few lines, along with her appearing during the ending sequence fight against the evil Earthling guys. There wasn't much interaction between characters in PS2 anyway, but it still feels like they should have done more to make that event a bigger deal.

It took me 10 years to finally beat this game. I had it as a kid on the NES but I never finished it. My mom sold the NES and all the games for 10$ at a garage sale. I was so pissed because she sold it when I was putting up posters for the damn sale.

Every time I go to play Mario 3 I try to feel the magic that others feel with this game, but I can never get into it. I don't like the exploration aspect, it makes the levels seem sparse if you're just aiming for the goals.

I agree. SMB3 is the start of the casualization of the Mario series. I want a pure platformer, not an exploration game. SMB1 is superior.

I'll start with Vajra (1993) by Datawest (makers of Rayxanber) for the LaserActive system. This is a rail-shooter on which you fight against a flying mecha. Being a laserdisc game, the game has a primitive CGI video playing while fighting, and it contains the music. Sadly, there aren't rips from it, so there is only the Laserdisc footage with the music.

Not sure if this should go in the CRT thread or not (maybe it should even go in /g/) but it's related to retro gaming so I may as well post here.
Does anybody know any good RGB SCART male to male or male to female cables? I need some SCART cables extended from the end of my cable's console to my SCART switch. I've heard that bad SCART cables can produce a lot of noise so looking to pay higher for better quality.

just look for some that don't have the cheap black plastic on them. Try european stores as you will have more options there. good scart cables aren't just a mess inside. Also make sure they're fully wired obviously
Eurofag here. I've never ever seen a SCART ribbon cable in my life and still wonder why that is the default Wikipedia image.
So I finally decided to take this off my list, like, 15 years too late.
Problem is, I know there's a whole bunch of mods now - some cosmetic, some bugfixes and game tweaks, some add content - and I'm in the classic dilemma: do I Play As Intended (maybe with some bugfixes), or do I Push The Graphics (maybe with that unofficially-official engine patch and some HD textures)? And If I do fix/change/mod anything, where do I start - what are the recommended patches for SS2?
Give me a hand here, /vr/.

Just use SS2Tool and you'll be fine. Might have to change a config if you can't drag+drop in the inventory.

I only finished it myself a few years ago, all raw, no mods.
It was fine. No 'tearing your ass off amazing', but totally playable and cohesive.
Higher res textures really bring things out tho, like being able to read the techno-gibberish on the monitors are nice thing.
If you can/want to, get HD textures that leave them the same, just in higher resolution.
Also, Im interested in your opinions about it during your playthrou, so keep us updated on yout thoughts about happenings inna game.

I sold my copy of Skies(picked it up cheap after DC's demise) after one play thru. Then a couple years back I got the itch to play again and it was going for $50 at a local game shop! That's one for sure I wish I would of hanged onto.
Sold a lot of SNES and N64 games for like 10 bucks a piece back in 1999/2000 in order to buy Lain VHSs.
I enjoyed watching the series but I miss my Super Mario RPG, Dracula X, Plok and others, and they're hella expensive now.
If you had PlayStation and didn't have this game you really fucked up. Yes that's an enemy lit on fire from my air taser.

At first perhaps I felt like that but haven't in ages now. The thing is to make yourself comfy, if you're immersed enough I don't see how playing on your computer can be a negative experience.

Is this some tryhard bait? Those were incredible. Some people have trouble with Empire cause it's tough, but what on earth is your problem with Super Star Wars?
This feels a lot like an Euro game in design. The way you're always overwhelmed by enemies and projectiles and you have little invincibility time between hits.
The only strategy against bosses seem to be spawn a health extension saber and a bunch of blaster power up items, stand still tanking hits and fire at each other until one of you dies.

Tried to make the same basic thing but without the weird aspect ratio.
Tried playing KOF94 for the first and have no idea how you're expected you're expected to win at single player. All projectiles you throw will be countered in some way. You get anywhere close and they grab. Every normal will be anticipated or blocked. It is Mortal Kombat 3 levels of fuck.
Post fighting games with the worst AI or any games that are deliberately programmed against you winning.

This is why playing against AI in fighting games sucks ass. They can't program AI anywhere near well enough to actually fight strategically. So in order to make playing against the computer actually challenging they have to make the AI opponent read your inputs and react before your move even comes out.
The result is that in order to win, you don't learn good fighting game strategy, you just learn how to cheese the AI. It turns one of the most strategically interesting genres into a set of cheap tricks...

Apparently the true last boss in Special is Ryo Sakazaki from AoF. I've never fought him.
