Games so old, not even hipsters bother to play it.

So what are some hidden gems on these dinosaurs?

Just like, ignore the bad posts, man.

No worries.
>>
I don't think there are any "hidden gems" as they've been out long enough for their libraries to have been scrutinized over and over for the cream of the crop.
I'll hastily list a great game (my subjective opinion) for each console;

>Intellivision
Tower of Doom

>Vectrex
Sadly never played one (yet)

Colecovision
>Ladybug

2600
>Midnight Magic

This is a bit of a rant.

Does anyone else just get tired of the hobby? On one end you got hipster collectors, dumb kids, and ecelebs while on the other you got the scalpers.
Video games have changed so much past 4th and 5thgen it’s crazy. I don’t hate change but when the change is shooters like CoD and Halo and all the other things wrong with the industry like DLC. It just makes me not want to be part of it.

The scalpers are what really gets me. No other hobby or industry is that bad. Both modern and old video games. For example, Bayonetta 2 is now going for $90+ new on ebay.

PC games don’t escape this either. I just bought the new Rainbow Six game and they want $20 something dollars for the 4k texture pack…. It’s just out of control. The online environment is so different now too. So many 3rd worlders from South America and Russia. It’s hard to get a good game these days.

Even /vr/ has changed unfortunately. Dank memes are the norm now.

Most people here will agree that the modern industry sucks, that's why we're on /vr/.

You can emulate if the cost of retro games is a problem. You have almost a lifetime worth of games that can be emulated for free and with good quality.
>>
>>2895284
I've had the majority of my collection for years. The problem is getting anything "new". Like I have no TG16 stuff and I'm not raping my wallet for it.
>>
>>2895279
I just don't pay attention to the opinions of hipsters or kids I think sound dumb. I avoid the games I don't like as well and there are still plenty to play. Also I like DLC. It's almost never necessary, and those games are easily ignored. In some games like fighters, it's great to have the option to update rosters and re-balance characters if necessary. Even in the event that it's a character I don't want to buy, I like that it still gets added as an option for someone else to fight and another opponent for me.

>No other hobby or industry is that bad.
This part is just plain wrong. Most hobbies based around collecting are like this.

Mega Man Legacy Collection
>Just the original games with an emulator
>7-10 not included
>18 dollars

FFV, FFVI
>Cheap rushed hack job of a remake for mobile
>20 dollars each

Holy shit. Why are these companies fucking retarded? Put some fucking effort into this shit. I'd gladly buy a solid port of these games.

rosenkreuzstilette is a Japanese indie game, and it has nice cute little graphics. Falcom constantly remakes their old games, putting a lot of time and effort into them.

Why can't Square or Capcom make ports of their beloved games on the level of these guys? It's fucking insulting that they expect me to pay money for this shit.

Oh mannnnnnnnnn what the fuck were they thinking ?!

It's a cheap rush job mobile port. And they threw it on Steam to make some more money.

It's like they couldn't decide how to screw up so they just went with everything.

I want to play the Mother games for the first time.

What's the best way for me to do this?

I've read about Earthbound Zero, Beginnings, and I also found this patched rom of Mother 1+2 for GBA. What's the best? Anything else I should know about?

Earthbound is the only one worth playing.

Play them in order if you want to have the complete experience. Mother 1 is good but likely most people will tell you it's "dated" or "grindy" because very few people still like 8 bit RPGs.

The official "Earth Bound Zero" ROM that you can find online is the exact same as EB Beginning on the virtual console, so whether you want to give Nintendo your money for it or not is up to you.
The GBA version has a translation patch made by Tomato (guy who did Mother 3 fan translation) and has the easy ring item that makes encounter rates and grinding less time consuming, I personally don't think it's really necessary but again, up to you.
>>
>>2893481
Play Mother 1/EarthBound Beginnings on the GBA, it's the best translation and has a few enhancements above other versions. It's fairly old school, so be aware of that.

Mother 2/EarthBound on the SNES is the only one that's translated and the best version, so play that.

Same with Mother 3, only on the GBA.

There are no gaides or any shenanigans like that unless you count the characters showing up on Smash Brothers, so enjoy. It's best to play them in order, both for gameplay and story purposes. If you can't handle how archaic Mother 1 may feel, just skip ahead to 2.

Artwork design or in-game design?

In-game. I've never actually liked the vast majority of official artwork for Final Fantasy.
>>
>>2889901
I prefer artwork because blond hair makes more sense with her story.
>>
>>2889879
Since I see her sprite in game, then her in game one. It's really jarring in most remakes to see her Amano portrait. Same goes with FF6 as well. I wish there was a hack to remove them.

Maybe it's hard if you play it the normal way, I wouldn't know, because it's insanely easy to break.

Get the Enc-None ability as soon as you start the game. No random encounters, you never get exp and level up, enemies and bosses stay low level thought the game too.

Synthesize the best spells like Zombie and Curaga early in the game from the items bosses drop, junction them to your stats, become ridiculously strong.

You can walk through the whole game without ever even playing Triple Triad.
>>
FF8 is easily the most exploitable game in the series. As soon as you have a grasp over the junction system and the mechanics for refining spells and items, you can curbstomp everything in the game without grinding for a single level.

Then there's limit break spam. Due to an oversight in how limit breaks are triggered, liberally canceling your turn will grant you infinite limit breaks as long as your HP is at critical.

The setting was pretty cool though. And I liked the Laguna sequences. FF needs more mature characters.

Mind blowing pseudo 3D effects and multi-segmented sprites that don't animate like total ass (looking at you Castlevania)

And of course the stages themselves are very beautiful and imaginative.

Art-wise, Kirby's Dream Land 3 beats Yoshi's Island at its own game.

No. You're entitled to your own opinion. I personally think the N64 has a ton of great games.
>>
The N64 is a pretty overrated nostalgiafag system but has like 10-20 games that are worth playing today
>>
>>2897412
Nah, it was a good system.

It's easy to think it had no games, but then you get to listing them all out and you realize it actually had a pretty good library.

Is there a 007 game better than this?

I honestly see nothing in Goldeneye other than being THE game to have fantastic splitscreen gatherings for that specific time. Everything from gameplay and beyond had been long surpassed by other Bond games, Perfect Dark, TimeSplitters, and more.

Have you made a conscious decision to only play retro games (roughly the ones that are defined reto by the rules of this board)? If so, why?

Do you just happen to only/mostly play retro games, with some modern games occasionally thrown in? For people who only play retro games, is there anything that modern games could do differently that would make you check them out? Has any modern game ever tempted you?
155 posts and 22 images submitted.

I mostly play retro games because I see no reason to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars with new games when I can play thousands of old ones for free or cheap money with just as much quality or even more to offer.
>>
>>2891408
Lurk, more. Way, more.
>>
>>2891408

Yes. Because there are very few games made for consoles later than psx that are worth any attention. Most game series went to trash when the full 3D generation started.

Resident Evil is the best example, went from the best survival horror series (1-3) to mediocre fps. I remember first time I saw Ps2, and my reaction was "its sucks, that's just the old playstation with higher resolution, longer loading times and bad remakes."

After that it has just gotten worse, all games are stream lined 3D that feel like fps even when it isn't.

Only modern games I play are p2w browser games. In 2D.

amazing music, amazing story, amazing atmosphere. Really great. I need to play the remaster, it was a buggy mess when I played the original with a bunch of band-aids to make it work on modern Windows.
>>
it's on sale on steam, should i get it?

Yes. Definitely worth a try. But don't be afraid to use walkthroughs or hints since some puzzles are nonsensical. Plus its about the story more than anything.
