Hey guys. I have the GOG version of tomb raider with Dosbox Daum. It uses nglide/direct3d and it looks sweet. So naturally I want to plunge into more Dos games so I quickstarted a standalone dos Rom of tomb raider in dos box. The graphics now look really ugly and it's really slow and buggy. Do I have to install the game first instead of quick running to enable proper 3d? How can I make nglide work with dos games? Are most dos games 3d? Should nglide be used with non pixel art games? How do I know if a game is supporting proper 3d with nglide or openglide or w/e? Is Dosbox sufficient or do you prefer PCEM? I have windows 7 and a Linux laptop and Dosbox Daum is easier on Windows since the Linux version has to be compiled.

>Are most dos games 3d?
Where do you get that idea? It's going to depend on what you consider 3d but texture mapped polygons only started in 1992 and hardware accelerated 3d came way later.

DOSbox normally works fine for me, I haven't gotten around to set up PCem.
>>
>>2945745
And why does standalone tomb raider looks worse? Is it misconfiguration of drivers and hardware?
>>
>>2945748
The normal Tomb Raider release doesn't support Glide/3DFX out of the box. You need to patch it.

Has anyone else been to Super Potato in Tokyo? What do you think of it? I love it to death. Must go for any retro gamer visiting Tokyo.

Hasn't it gotten to the point that so many retro bandwagoners have been visiting that place that most of the good shit is picked over and everything else is super expensive?
>>
>>2945562
It's not cheap, but not too expensive. Especially compared to prices outside of Japan. They still have lots of good stuff, too.
>>
Visited the place last week or so. Pretty nice and I really like the atmosphere of the place. Didn't really buy anything because some of the stuff was just really expensive. The arcade was cool though.

If you want good prices try Traders, cant remember which one of them had retro games. They for example have a no guarantee box, but the games are still in great condition and cheap. Even their boxed titles have okay prices. Also try some Book Offs they usually have used retro games.

Best version of each FF game? Up to FFX lets say.

FF1/2/3/4 PSP (even though 1/2 are easy as fuck, the art makes up for it)

FF5 GBA
FF6 GBA
FF7 PS4
FF8 PC
FF9 PSX (PC port will be shit lets be honest)
FFX PS4

PS1 version for FF1 and 2. They fix a lot of glitches while maintaining some of its mechanics like the Vatican spell system in Final Fantasy I and the stat growth along with degradation in Final Fantasy II.

>the art makes up for it
You what?
That's the absolute worst part-
>>
>>2943992
There was no need to include FFX on this list. It's not retro.

Hello People of Color,
what is the best way to play Alone in the Dark 1?
The 3D0 is superior with featuring audio dialogue and and enhanced orchestral soundtrack. Problem is 3d0 emulation is really shitty.

What does /vr/ think is the best way to play this game? DOS or 3D0?
Is there a patch that enhances the DOS version like it is the case with for example Tomb Raider patched with PSX soundtrack=?

Like I'm literally autistic because I wanted to play the game so much a few hours ago but haven't yet because of above reasons of uncertainty.

just play the dos version
>>
>>2943905
Yea. It's still a solid running game and it's pretty fucking good. It didn't age horribly. Puts a lot of the modern Resident Evil type games to shame still. Scare the FUCK out of me as a kid. Evil Pirate George Washington man... you don't even know.

Yea, just get the dosbox'd one. They got it cheap at GoG. Comes with 2 & 3 too.. But they're complete shit.

Does it upset you we can't discuss Zelda games that are better than Ocarina of Time?

Please do your part to keep /vr/ a place for interesting, high-quality discussion.

We have threads about other Zelda games all the time. MM, Link's Awakening, Oracle games, etc.

Why wouldn't we be able to discuss Link to the Past?

What are some retro games that fit this trope?

Pic related. The NES port of Ultima 3 is rather awkward JRPG makeover of the series with its colorful palette blobs, upbeat soundtrack, utterly broken classes and a number of useless and exploitable content; but the game somehow manages to be charming nonetheless.

The NES version of Ultima: Exodus will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first RPG I ever played (my uncle bought it when I was really young), and the entire reason I wanted to learn to read so early on.

Because of Ultima, I also played and (mostly) understood Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy before I started kindergarten.

Rapid Angel. Extremely fun anime beat'em up platformer, with a broken little juggle system. I still want to see someone do a speedrun of this.

Alright /vr/ i need some help with this shit load of fuck game. I'm trying to unlock some of the secret cars but i have never been able to do it. For example to get the dodge viper you need to beat arcade pro series on expert. Yeah good fucking luck. On hard its retardedly unfair, the computers are too fast and the tracks might as well be ice because your sliding into everything because apparently on expert, they thought it was a good idea to make your cars handling utter shit. After months of trying and trying i have given up on this fucking game. I hate to cheat, and always earn things legit, but decided enough is enough. And guess what? The cheat doesn't fucking work. On every website i checked it says press R (x6) at the title screen to unlock all the cars and it doesn't fucking work. I have tried everything. I've never been so pissed off at a fucking game, i just want to check out the secret cars. Can anyone help me? Am i doing something wrong?

Is it safe to say Bubsy 3D is the PlayStation equivalent of Superman 64 - as in the one game on the system that is indisputably the worst? Or is there an even worse PlayStation game?

For all its faults, Bubsy 3D is bug free and playable from start to finish.

For something to be worse, it has to be like SQIJ on the ZX Spectrum.

Why are you Americans so keen on knowing which thing in whatever media is the "undisputed" worst? Like all articles from trash sites always begin with

>"the worst X you have ever seen"
or
>"top ten worst X ever".

Does something being globally recognized as THE worst to be relevant? And what when you finally find it? What will you discuss? How it's bad and how it was never meant to be that ungodly bad? We know that already. Do you enjoy mindlessly bashing a game which can't even defend itself from how "bad" it is? I can already imagine the meaningful posts:

>Man this game is so bad
>Ikr? SO fucking bad.
>lol this game sucks monkey dick
>haha like it's the absolute worst
>what were they THINGKEN
>it literally gave me brain cancer
>when will X e-celeb review this?
>how can you make a game THIS BAD

How about what we could do to make it better? That would be a nice constructive activity.

I know there's a cult following for so bad it's good movies, but I'm not sure there is even a "worst" because someone would always hate something else more.

Please explain.

Previous thread - >>2899049

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Still wondering what setting would I look for in the service menu of a PVM to lower the intensity of the blue? I notice there's some bleeding going on.
>>
I have a question about CRT's wearing out, and how to tell what the problem is.

I have a Smile KFC CA-2011 PC CRT rebadged by Viewmaster, and I'd like help determining if the capacitors are failing. It's not anywhere near bright enough unless I set the termination to high - and then it gets blurry from signal reflection along with the fact it's still not very bright.

However, if I displayed any one quarter of the screen white, that quarter can get nice and bright. But if i then changed the whole screen to that same white, it only stays bright for an instant and then fades to being much dimmer overall. So some parts of an image can be bright, but when the whole screen is meant to be bright, the overall brightness fades within half a second or so. Or doesn't fade; just never gets very bright, if no part of the preceding image was bright.

Does this mean the capacitors are wearing out? Given the phosphors are capable of being bright as long as the whole screen isn't, i'd say they're ok. And given the monitor is in perfect focus with the termination set to 75R, i presume the Flyback is in reasonable condition. The only thing left is the fading effect.

I've actually pulled it apart and kinda begun cleaning it and removing the caps, so i hope they're the problem!

Feedback appreciated; i'd love to know if there are certain caps it's not worth replacing, etc.

Photos to follow completion of the project :)

I had one of these, Mortal Kombat 3 for my brazilian Master System, back when i was around 7yo, but the game always seemed weird. Few playable characters, no history...

ITT: we talk about retro games that were heart pounding and intense, games that kept you on your toes and challenged your skills. Pic related, the very last part of the turbo tunnel requires absolute concentration to beat it and I've manged to get past it only a few times.

I can do turbo tunnel on autopilot. The fireball section of Volkmire's inferno is the absolute concentration you speak of.

I never did find a discernible pattern during that part.

I just hugged the left side of the screen and dodged like a mofo.

You guys STINK if you can't get past turbo tunnel. You would shit your diapers at clinger winger or rat race.
