Objectively top tier best jRPGs?
Not most memorable but best, in following terms:
>actual exploration
>no random encounters, or relatively low rate of them
>no tenaciously long spell/attack animations
>engaging with a sense of progression
>fun even today

You're heavily mistaken if you think Rayman 2 is where Ubisoft dropped the ball OP.
What are your favorite retro racing games? All /vr/ platforms/subgenres welcome.
Daytona USA obviously related
Pretty good entry, ported to the ds
Kinda unknown though

I never played 64, but I played a ton of the original and Type 4.
The fact that pic related still doesn't work in MAME really bums me out. The console ports just don't cut it. Same with The Rock and Cruisn' Exotica.
I loved this one PC game called ultimate race pro, it was a lot of fun.
Have you played it yet, /vr/?

What do you think it did right?
What are the things in this game that to this day haven't been matched or surpassed?
What are the things that still make this game unique and memorable in 2016?
>>2905127
I think the atmosphere of the game in general still holds up as interesting in 2016. Considering the limitations of the n64, the world of OOT is still intriguing and mysterious even today I find, due to great graphic design and music/ sound design.
Also, the n64 controller was perfect for the game, simple A and B main buttons, C buttons for items, Z for targeting, it still feels great today.

First 3D Zelda.

The Forest Temple is still probably my favorite dungeon from any Zelda game. The combo of the art direction and the music is great. Really that entire section when you come out of the Temple of Time, all the way from Hyrule Castle Town to the Forest Temple, is very well done and hammers home how stark the contrast is between child Link's innocent colorful world and adult Link's dark and mysterious one.
Thinking of trying this game out, is Skies of Arcadia better on Dreamcast or Gamecube?
>>2940918
The Gamecube version is MOSTLY better. It has slightly better load times, a much lower encounter rate, and all the downloadable stuff from the DC version by default.
For whatever reason, though, a lot of songs on the GC version are kind of messed up, and sound like they're missing some instruments (or said instruments are much quieter than they should be). The DC version definitely has better music.
Very little difference. DC looks and sounds better but not by much.
>>2940918
The gamecube port has extra content like new discoveries and a new subplot that has a new boss in it. The biggest difference is the lower encounter rate. Give it a try, it's a genuinely good underrated game despite its flaws.
Any games like Gundam Wing: Endless Duel except as a shoot-em-up or brawler? Meaning, with actual stages and levels?
I guess I'm looking for a cross between a brawler and a shoot-em-up and a run-and-gun game.
Not sure what you mean, there are lots of shmups with robots.

I can't be the only one who remembers this game?
I found out about it a few years ago and it had probably been dead for quite a while by that time.
I like how low-fi it is though, it feels really unique. The community for this thing must have been insane.
Give me your top ten action-platformers (2D sidescrolling action games where you do more than just jump on dudes, preferably arcade-style games (designed to be beaten in one sitting with a limited amount of lives).
My picks:
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Gimmick!
Alien Soldier
Castlevania
Castlevania (X68000)
Metal Slug
Contra III
Contra: Hard Corps
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Batman (NES)
Hard Corps Uprising, Mega Man 9, and Gigantic Army would be up there, but they aren't /vr/ I guess.
1. Ninja Spirit
2. Holy Diver
3. Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru
4. Shatterhand
5. Ninja Gaiden
6. Ninja Five-O
7. Hagane
8. Strider 2
9. The Adventure of Little Ralph
10. Castlevania Bloodlines
Rocket Knight Adventures
Mega Turrican
Shinobi 3
in addition to pretty everything else already mentioned. Although I'm not really sure run-and-guns like Contra and Alien Soldier count as platformers in any way.
>>2940419
Well, what makes a game like that less of a platformer than, say, Castlevania or Rocket Knight? You do just as much platforming in Contra games as you do in those, really.

That one is a highly sophisticated golf game in fact. The cutified Mario skin masks that fact. Very good physics engine.

How did it compare to the GBC version? The GBC one is all I had as a kid, and I honestly don't remember if it was any good or not.

"You gonna love it!"
I can't bring myself to continue playing this. It's too dense. I made it to the golden city, where a thief keeps busting me out of jail.
I guess i have a long way to go right? I have more fond memories of BoF 2, i remember it being much more entertaining, even tough i haven't finished either of them.
You guys can still stomach this kind of gameplay? I sure cant anymore.
>>2938936
Breath of Fire games are some of the most needlessly drawn out games completely full of fluff that ever graced the SNES and PS1.
I wouldn't even bother with any of them desu. I think the only ones I would recommend are 4 and Dragon Quarter.
4 has some interesting mechanics and story, and DQ has really nice gameplay.
Multiple weeks without a BoF thread.
Now 2 BoF threads on the same day, on page 1 at the same time.

Git gut.
It hasn't aged too well

There it is!
Guys, you are my last hope.
I started playing again Samurai Shodown V Special and I can't activate the most "brutal" fatalities. What I mean is that I activate Rage Explosion and when the enemy has the blue health bar I enter 214CD. What I obtain by doing this is a special attack that instantly kills the opponent but it just makes a squirt of blood from his body.
I am too lazy to search everywhere for this and from the only results I made I didn't find explanations for this.
I hope this fits /vr/, I rarely post here and your help would be really appreciated.
>>2937264
>I am too lazy to search
I am too lazy to give you a proper answer :^)
>>2937270
What I meant is that I already searched but from what I found there is nothing that explain this. Read more carefully, I am not such an ass.
Nobody really knows the answer?
Are there any 3D games which graphics didn't age badly?
Yes, most of them.

most later gen PS1 titles look okay to good. It's usually more an issue of resolution being stupid low
The SNES' sound chip is so great, at times I even think it sounds better than the N64. Is this just a question of sound design or was the SNES' sound chip superior in some ways? SNES sound/music thread? I'll start with one of my faves:

lol I see what you mean though, the n64 one is definitely more technically advanced, but i still think the snes sounds better, especially when it comes to f zero games
